Very disappointing.
Revisado: 01-12-25
Don't know what happened, but this has been the first Sanderson book (out of many that I've read) that I've been disappointed with. I'm the kind of Sanderson fan who pre-orders every new book. This book, instead of having the typical arc of both sides getting more powerful, building to an even better conclusion, has odd deus ex machinas. It was very painful to finish. It's almost as if Sanderson has forgotten how to write intricate story arcs. It's like the last season of Game of Thrones. I could care less about the silly stupid romance in there. I have no personal objections to it. It just didn't add to the story.
The presentation of the spiritual realm was the most disappointing part of it. Sanderson breaks his own rules. Doesn't describe the rules. Hand waves the rules away. I have no idea if I'm going to be able to listen to or read any more books in this series. Sigh.

Historia
Six months after Pearl Harbor, the seemingly invincible Imperial Japanese Navy prepared a decisive blow against the United States. After sweeping through Asia and the South Pacific, Japan's military targeted the tiny atoll of Midway, an ideal launching pad for the invasion of Hawaii and beyond. The United States Navy would be waiting for them. Thanks to cutting-edge code-breaking technology, tactical daring, and a huge stroke of luck, the Americans under Admiral Chester W. Nimitz dealt the Japanese navy its first major defeat of the war.

Great detailed history of Midway.
Revisado: 06-22-24
Thanks to the detailed exposition of this book, I am now a semi-expert on the Battle of Midway from both the Japanese and American perspectives. Having access to personal interviews made this book better and it told the story that was more personal than the dry facts.

Not enough sword
Revisado: 06-22-24
For a trilogy of books that its title promises to be about sword play, it ends up being 1% action, 99% boring. Promised action was not delivered. Imo, the action sequences were not worth the rest of the time I spent listening to the boring portions. I rolled my eyes at the very convenient deus ex machina events to keep the plot moving. But the author has promise and merits a second look perhaps for his books in the future.

Historia
Each time she knelt to "catch" another wriggling baby - nearly 3,000 times during her remarkable career - California midwife Peggy Vincent paid homage to the moment when pain bows to joy and the world makes way for one more. With every birth, she encounters another woman-turned-goddess: Catherine rides out her labor in a car careening down a mountain road. Sofia spends hers trying to keep her hyper doctor-father from burning down the house. Susannah gives birth so quietly that neither husband nor midwife notice until there's a baby in the room.

I loved his honest perspective
Revisado: 01-18-24
It was very interesting to see terminal illness and death from the medical perspective. The way he told his story was deeply moving, inspiring and sobering. All in a good way. Thank you for letting us have a window into your life and the process of dying. I hope I appreciate my days more because of Paul’s honest sharing.

A little long for me but still worth reading.
Revisado: 06-14-23
Liked the 3 main characters/ story lines. Liked the narration. Liked the present day descriptions. Liked the humor used in all the stories… it helped make the history less dry.
My daughter is traveling there… and since I didn’t join her, I wanted to get a feel for her adventure by listening to this. I wish she was able to listen to the whole book before she left. It should be required reading for anyone going to Machu Picchu.

Best book for parents who adopt
Revisado: 02-01-23
Short and powerful. Not sure why this is the book that I could listen to daily… but after all of the “studying” and classes I have taken this book is what brings it all together. So grateful that another adoptive parent recommended this! I am going to give it to my niece who is going to get her masters in social work.

Have you ever wondered "Why did I do that?" or "Why can't I just control my behavior?" Others may judge our reactions and think, "What's wrong with that person?" When questioning our emotions, it's easy to place the blame on ourselves; holding ourselves and those around us to an impossible standard. It's time we started asking a different question. Through deeply personal conversations, Oprah Winfrey and renowned brain and trauma expert Dr. Bruce Perry offer a groundbreaking and profound shift from asking “What’s wrong with you?” to “What happened to you?”
