Great story but needed tighter construction
Revisado: 04-30-25
I really enjoyed this book and I will continue the series. What I wish had happened was that the author left the stories of the different characters more connected, such as to avoid making you think that you were starting a new book in the middle of the reading.
But I do admit at the end it all does tie together not as neatly as I would hope, but still very much to make a satisfying and to have me keep reading. Looking forward to seeing what happens next in this journey.

Raised my IQ
Revisado: 11-16-24
Seriously, I am certain this book made me smarter. Smarter for what, I have no clue. This book really scratched my itch for a different taken on "aliens." What I didnt realize before starting this book was that it would expand my understanding of what it means to be "human." My goodness this book really gives you so much to process. Sorry if this too much of a spoiler, but I certainly count this book as one where humans lose but it's not just the aliens that defeat us.

Nice addition to the overall DS9 lore
Revisado: 10-16-24
A nice story that gives insights to a few more Rules of Acquisition.
The biggest issue with the audiobook is the performance, the voice acting was subpar and so challenging to enjoy. The female voices sounded like men, in fact most of the voices sounded to similar. Still, the story was interesting and entertaining enough to justify a listen.

Historia
In Manhattan, a young grad student gets off the train and realizes he doesn't remember who he is, where he's from, or even his own name. But he can sense the beating heart of the city, see its history, and feel its power. In the Bronx, a Lenape gallery director discovers strange graffiti scattered throughout the city, so beautiful and powerful it's as if the paint is literally calling to her. In Brooklyn, a politician and mother finds she can hear the songs of her city, pulsing to the beat of her Louboutin heels.

Love it!
Revisado: 09-18-24
The author got The Bronx 100% correct. My place of birth, the Bronx was of course the most interesting character. Still, the entire collection of other boroughs were fascinating. As a native New Yorker, I would certainly trade parts of NJ for Staten Island. So even that was well done.

A great change of pace
Revisado: 04-11-24
This is a very compelling take on the "dark forrest" theory regarding the Ferminx Paradox. I appreciated the authors ability to not make the aliens overtly evil but to still capture and describe the horrors of their actions.
This book is different from peers in that it is very short, does not get caught up in too much miltary made for movies battles, as well as focuses less on a single character and more on a set of arguments.
I appreciated this change of pace in humans vs aliens Sci-fi.

Interesting idea disjointed delivery
Revisado: 03-06-24
The premise to this book is really intriguing and got me engaged for the first third of the story.
However, if you told me that this book had 4 to 5 different authors who wrote their versions and then they just combined it into one story. I would believe you.
I am not sure why the author decided to out of nowhere include the US children and then take on this very puzzling choice of discussing war games that were horrific , but also inconsequential to the story.
The conclusion felt unsettled and left me going okay while that just happened.
Hard to recommended this book, but it's not a bad book. Just a poorly delivered concept.

One of the best sci-fi stories of all time.
Revisado: 01-19-23
I have enjoyed reading and listening to this story so many times.
The story stands out because of the ending, you experience an ending that is heart breaking but still incredibly satisfying. Thats all I can say--without given any spoilers.
There are so many fascinating arguments and commentary related to humanity. I have enjoyed diving back this book on numerous occasions often just to re-engage with some of the viewpoints held about humanity.
I strongly recommend this book.
The mini-series adaption of this book was interesting and kept true enough to some of the conversations to be worth a watch.
But the book is what really opens your mind and challenges your perspective.

In 2004, Doctor Damien Howard's 131st birthday celebration took an unexpected turn. His personal SETI project detected an extraterrestrial signal directed at Earth. Unfortunately, Dr. Howard's long-hoped-for communication contained a message of dire warning rather than greeting. In 1945, humanity had become a species of galactic interest and was given 100 years to address the issue.

An amazing magical story
Revisado: 09-21-22
This book was so well written. I fully enjoyed listening to this epic journey. The book reminded me of how Max Brooks in his book World War Z mixed intense charcter development of multiple characters with heart racing action.
The aliens were unique and really enhanced the story.
I will enjoy re-listening to this book.
