Historia
Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction." She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail.

Wish I could thank her in person

A devastating story of recovery that will, no doubt, build a larger community for those with tricky people in their lives. She shares with dark humor and a perspective that ages along the timeline of the story. It’s so difficult and so, so good. Thank you!

Historia
Séamas O’Reilly’s mother died when he was five, leaving him, his ten (!) brothers and sisters, and their beloved father in their sprawling bungalow in rural Derry. It was the 1990s; the Troubles were a background rumble, but Séamas was more preoccupied with dinosaurs, Star Wars, and the actual location of heaven than the political climate.

Dang it, Seamus.

Being of East Tennessee parentage and Irish descent, the humor and grief was so familiar to me. It was akin to sitting at the misfit cousins’ table at a large family gathering. Beautifully written and read witness of a family knitted together in wonder and loss. A warning, though: do not be changing the kitty litter whilst reading the acknowledgments. You’ll find yourself in an urea and saline situation that is also a tragedy/comedy.

Historia
When teen social activist and history buff Kezi Smith is killed under mysterious circumstances after attending a social justice rally, her devastated sister Happi and their family are left reeling in the aftermath. As Kezi becomes another immortalized victim in the fight against police brutality, Happi begins to question the idealized way her sister is remembered. Perfect. Angelic.

I cannot recommend this book, and the recording of it, enough. The historical travel through a family’s timeline and across the country was so well executed. It filled my daughter/sister/mother heart full. And, it shocked my thriller fiction fan brain. I am so proud of these amazing authors and actresses. Well done!
