Historia
Published in 1945, Cannery Row focuses on the acceptance of life as it is: both the exuberance of community and the loneliness of the individual. Drawing on his memories of the real inhabitants of Monterey, California, Steinbeck interweaves the stories of Doc, Henri, Mack and his boys, and the other characters in this world where only the fittest survive, to create a novel that is at once one of his most humorous and most poignant works.

Read twice in college, still magical
Revisado: 01-07-23
Doc, Mack Dora and the boys all populate this magical place. For me, the story could go on forever. JS’s background in biology and marine science shines thru; he’s the only author I know who can captivate you with a description of a ground hog constructing and filling his burrow. A treat for any Steinbeck fan!

Historia
A Manchester lad from Irish Traveller stock, born three months premature and weighing just a pound at birth, Tyson (named after his father’s boxing hero) grew up to become one of the most unlikely heavyweight champions in history. This ‘dream come true’ soon turned to nightmare, however, as alcohol and cocaine abuse took hold and Tyson was stripped of his titles. What followed was the darkest moment of his life - detailed in this book for the first time - in which he came within seconds of ending everything.

Half boxing and half about the WBC Heavyweight Champ’s long struggle with depression, OCD, and general mental health. I understand where he’s coming from, and nowI get why he could retire at this time and still lead a very fulfilling life. Trials, tribulations and redemption in dual areas.

Historia
For the first time, the lid is lifted on the world's fastest growing combat sport, Bare Knuckle Boxing, written by Stu Armstrong, who has worked in the centre of the sometimes controversial sport. The purest form of pugilism is a nest of vipers with of the most with dirty tricks, and secrets at every turn.

Only halfway thru now and can’t take it anymore! Narrator sounds like a pompous Jeeves, with the most irritating pauses scattered Thru out the sentences. Some chapters are terribly short. Worse, this sheltered, ethnocentric snob can NOT pronounce Joe Louis’ name properly, calling him Joe Lew-eee! Why did editors not catch this? More when I finish the book.

Historia
"I can lick any son of a bitch in the world." So boasted John L. Sullivan, the first modern heavyweight boxing champion of the world, a man who was the gold standard of American sports for more than a decade and the first athlete to earn more than a million dollars. He had a big ego, a big mouth, and even bigger appetites. His womanizing, drunken escapades, and chronic police-blotter presence were godsends to a burgeoning newspaper industry.

The very interesting bio of the first American sports super-
star. JLS closed out the era of the bare-knuckle fighter, and ushered in the modern sport of boxing by Queensbury rules. A fascinating account and a more than worthwhile listen for anyone interested in fistic history. Highly recommended.

Historia
More than any other sport, boxing has a history of being easy to rig. There are only two athletes and one or both may be induced to accept a bribe; if not the fighters, then the judges or referee might be swayed. In such inviting circumstances, the mob moved into boxing in the 1930s and profited by corrupting a sport ripe for exploitation. In Boxing and the Mob: The Notorious History of the Sweet Science, Jeffrey Sussman tells the story of the coercive and criminal underside of boxing, covering nearly the entire 20th century.

Very good for the real Boxing Fan
Revisado: 05-19-22
Excellent story-telling, tho the narration was a bit stilted at times. Learned things I NEVER KNEW about folks I thought were stand-up guys. The treatment of the subject is limited by its VAST scope, but the biggest influences are dealt with well and thoroughly. For the die hard boxing fan and historian this is required reading. Now I know how and why Sonny Liston REALLY died, and the ugly truth about the Raging Bull and not-so-prime Primo. Treat yourself, it’s worth it!

Loved the book and the narration. A very human, honest portrait of a great bare knuckle fighter. Gives insight into the gypsy “travelers” who roam the UK today, and shows you why Tyson Fury IS Gypsy King. If you enjoy pugilistic sports it’s a must-read!

Pretty Good, GREAT if you’re a Detroiter
Revisado: 01-13-22
Story a bit too shallow for my liking (but so were the Purples). Great stories, with more of a history than I’ve been able to find elsewhere. Decent, fluid narration. Even pronounced some of the odder names correctly. I wished for more meat, more depth, about the Gang. I’ll just have to look further.

From the best-selling author of The Prince of Providence comes a revelatory biography of Rocky Marciano, the greatest heavyweight champion of all time. The son of poor Italian immigrants, with short arms and stubby legs, Rocky Marciano accomplished a feat that eluded legendary heavyweight champions like Joe Louis, Jack Dempsey, Muhammad Ali, and Mike Tyson: He never lost a professional fight. His record was a perfect 49-0.

Revisado: 08-16-20
Wonderful book covering Rocky’s life from birth to his premature death in a small plane crash. The fight descriptions make you feel like you are there. Masterful Storytelling. Only complaint is that I wish the reader had more voices in his repertoire. A must for anyone who loves the “sweet science”.
