Historia
The year was 1973, and Spiro T. Agnew, the former governor of Maryland, was Richard Nixon’s second-in-command. Long on firebrand rhetoric and short on political experience, Agnew had carried out a bribery and extortion ring in office for years. Authors Rachel Maddow and Michael Yarvitz detail the investigation that exposed Agnew’s crimes, the attempts at a cover-up - which involved future president George H. W. Bush - and the backroom bargain that forced Agnew’s resignation but also spared him years in federal prison.

Excellent documentation of under covered scandal.
Revisado: 03-04-21
The original podcast was excellent and this book gives more details to a scandal that was overshadowed in its time and in history by the larger Watergate scandal. Too bad Rachel Maddow didn't do the reading herself because unlike James McSorley she knows how to pronounce her name, and the informal "wells" and "ums" come off a bit awkward in what is for the most part a decent reading. Well worth it despite the somewhat lacking performance.

Historia
From the day he first stepped into the Yankee clubhouse, Jim Bouton (1939-2019) was the sports world's deceptive revolutionary. Underneath the crew cut and behind the all-American boy-next-door good looks lurked a maverick with a signature style. Whether it was his frank talk about player salaries and mistreatment by management, his passionate advocacy of progressive politics, or his efforts to convince the United States to boycott the 1968 Olympics, Bouton confronted the conservative sports world and compelled it to catch up with a rapidly changing American society.

Nice bio of sports and literary hero
Revisado: 05-09-20
This well written bio covers a lot of familiar ground with the baseball years and "Ball Four" going into detail with interviews with friends and family. More interesting is the coverage of Bouton's later years not addressed in various updates to "Ball Four" particularly his struggles as his health declined. One inconsistency is the recounting of the Phil Linz harmonica incident in which Nathanson credits Bouton rather than Mantle as the instigator. Abram's read is strong for the most part aside from a few mispronounced names, and in a few spots there appears to be editing errors as Abrams stops and says "alternate" before re-reading a line. On the whole a compelling bio of an underappreciated sports and literary hero.

Historia
David Halberstam, an avid sports writer with an investigative reporter’s tenacity, superbly details the end of the 15-year reign of the New York Yankees in October 1964. That October found the Yankees going head-to-head with the St. Louis Cardinals for the World Series pennant. Expertly weaving the narrative threads of both teams’ seasons, Halberstam brings the major personalities on the field - from switch-hitter Mickey Mantle to pitcher Bob Gibson - to life. Using the teams’ subcultures, Halberstam also analyzes the cultural shifts of the '60s.

Great book, terrible narration
Revisado: 05-04-19
Halberstam's great 1995 book is given a terrible reading by Angelo Di Loreto who makes no attempt to learn the proper pronunciation of player names, including Hall of Famer Orlando Cepeda.

Historia
Secret Service agent Clint Hill brings history intimately and vividly to life as he reflects on his 17 years protecting the most powerful office in the nation. Hill walked alongside Presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard M. Nixon, and Gerald R. Ford, seeing them through a long, tumultuous era - the Cold War; the Cuban Missile Crisis; the assassinations of John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Robert F. Kennedy; the Vietnam War; Watergate; and the resignations of Spiro Agnew and Richard M. Nixon.

True American Hero
Revisado: 05-21-16
With the previous excellent books by Clint Hill and Lisa McCubbin detailing his experiences with JFK it is interesting to hear about his service with the other presidents, as well as a more in depth look at his life after the Secret Service. The only negative is George Newbern's sometimes bland reading and occasional mispronunciations, though that does not diminish the impact of this true American hero's story.

Historia
Acclaimed baseball writer Roger Kahn gives us a memoir of his Brooklyn childhood, a recollection of a life in journalism, and a record of personal acquaintance with the greatest ballplayers of several eras. His father had a passion for the Dodgers; his mother’s passion was for poetry. Somehow, young Roger managed to blend both loves in a career that encompassed writing about sports for the New York Herald Tribune, Sports Illustrated, the Saturday Evening Post, Esquire, and Time.

Great book from a great writer
Revisado: 03-01-15
Great book from a great baseball writer, a nice companion piece to "The Boys of Summer." Unfortunately Moseley mispronounces many names (somebody narrating a book largely about the Dodgers does not know Leo Durocher?), often giving multiple pronunciations to the same person, but great stories of Kahn's life as a writer and the people he covered.

Historia
Hall of Fame pitcher Bob Gibson has always been one of baseball's most uncompromising stars. Gibson's no-holds-barred autobiography recounts the story of his life, from barnstorming around the segregated South with Willie Mays' black all-stars to his astonishing later career as a three-time World Series winner and one of the game's all-time greatest players.

Good story despite poor reading
Revisado: 12-29-14
What did you love best about Stranger to the Game?
Having read "From Ghetto to Glory" (which needs to be an audiobook as well) was good to hear Gibson's stories from '68 and beyond.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Stranger to the Game?
Particularly enjoyed Gibson recalling his no-hitter.
Would you be willing to try another one of Fred Berman’s performances?
Terrible reading from Fred Berman who clearly knows nothing about baseball and does not miss an opportunity to mispronounce a name.
Any additional comments?
Despite poor reading is an interesting story from one of baseball's all time greats.
