An absolutely amazing debut novel from Katharine Ashe, an exceptional new voice in historical romance, Swept Away by a Kiss is the first book in an exciting new series - the story of a society jade who thinks she's done it all until she meets the devil himself. What Even Is This Story?
Revisado: 02-11-25
The sexual tension is beyond ridiculous and borders on a mix of comedy and offense.
And I’m not a sticker for accuracy, but a trampy heroine is so far outside of “period correct” that this story is unlistenable. In short, it’s dumb.

Unbearable
Revisado: 10-18-24
Most disappointing Laurens book I’ve read yet. The stupid, insipid, “man afraid to love so he acts like a complete a-hole” trope was too much to bear and the every-5-minutes “sex means he loves me” love scenes were rendered pathetic as a result.
There’s nothing likeable about Charlie or this story, don’t waste your time on this one.

Historia
Upon her father's death, beautiful, headstrong Lady Clare knew that she must wed, for the protection of the Isle of Desire now fell to her. Yet when her guardian's choice of prospective husband rode through her castle gates, she felt utterly betrayed. All sinewy muscle and savage steel, Sir Gareth of Wyckmere was not the poet she'd requested but a fearsome knight whose only interest was in war.

Meh
Revisado: 10-15-24
Amanda/Jayne is good writer so the construction of the story is not the issue. Moreover, I truly love that the book is set in Medieval times as opposed to the (yawn) Regency era, but the female protagonist is so incredibly whiny, simple-minded, and annoying; she’s the early-modern equivalent of a self-important influencer. I really didn’t give a rat’s rear about her.
Look, I know romance is escape and stories need to be palatable to the modern reader, but the historical anachronisms were just too much—she was constantly trying to prove that she’s a “modern woman,” unfortunately this manifested as petty whining & unreasonability.
Takeaway: You can be a dingbat and get some schmuck to fall in love with you if you are wealthy enough.

Just, Groan…And Gentle Spoiler Warning
Revisado: 09-30-24
Soooo many groans.
First groan is the gross Southern Belle “American” accent for an 1820s Philadelphian. It’s almost unbearable.
Second groan is what a moron and a wanker the supposedly romantic lead is. There’s nothing appealing about him.
I’m only in the middle of the book as I write this review, and I don’t know if I’ll be able to stick around for what happens next; there’s some simplistic foreshadowing of fertility issues and I just don’t know if I care enough to stick around to see how that plays out.

Historia
Lord Devlin Cader, Earl of Alverton, married Therese Cynster five years ago. What he didn’t tell her then and has assiduously hidden ever since - for what seemed excellent reasons at the time - is that he loves her every bit as much as she loves him. For her own misguided reasons, Therese had decided that the adage that Cynsters always marry for love did not necessarily mean said Cynsters were loved in return. She accepted that was usually so, but she believed she would never be loved for herself.

Silly Premise
Revisado: 04-16-24
13 hours of a grown-ass man afraid to say “I love you” to his wife is the most epic stretch of a premise into a full book ever undertaken in the history of the earth. Plots that could unravel with 1 conversation are not great plots.

I Just Can’t
Revisado: 04-14-24
Had to quit halfway through because the plot just got too stupid and not even slightly believable in the deepest fantasy world. Pointless angst and a male protagonist using the old “uncaring mommy & daddy” excuse for abusive behavior, but it’s all ok because the sex is good.
Yawn and yuck.
If I happen to go back and finish the book and it’s great, I’ll update this review, but I have no plans to do so at this time.

I’m Trying
Revisado: 12-06-23
I’m halfway through chapter 4 and I’m taking a break because I simply don’t care about any of these characters—they aren’t particularly likable or entertaining. In fact, there are certain things about both main characters that I actively dislike.
I enjoyed the first Pennyroyal novel and I was excited to begin this one, but it just falls flat. I may revisit, and then again I may simply call it quits without a backward glance.

Big Meh
Revisado: 10-31-23
Silly, one-dimensional characters who are either so good or so evil they’re straight out of a cartoon leave you not giving a rat’s rump what happens to them.
I must have listened to something read by this narrator before, likely by the same author since the word “grimace” appears far more than it should, and every time the narrator mispronounces it as “grim-ACE.” I actually busted out laughing at one point it sounded so stupid.
The story is fine if you have housework or a 20-mile walk to cover…it’s not AWFUL, it’s just “meh.”

Historia
The story that made Agatha Christie famous ends with one of her most dramatic twists. The villagers of King’s Abbot are shocked when a wealthy local widow commits suicide and the very next day her fiancé, Roger Ackroyd, is stabbed to death. Dr. James Sheppard, the local physician, discovers the body of his friend and narrates the ensuing hunt for the killer. All the guests and staff at Ackroyd's country house seem to have solid alibis - except for his missing stepson.
