Historia
Always on the periphery, looking on, young Frankie Howe was never quite sure enough of herself to take center stage—after all, life had already judged her harshly. Now old, Frankie finds it easier to forget the life that came before. Then Damian, a young Irish caretaker, arrives at her London flat, there to keep an eye on her as she recovers from a fall. A memory is sparked, and the past crackles into life as Damian listens to the story Frankie has kept stored away all these years.

Beautiful and poignant
Revisado: 04-29-25
It's been a long while since I read/listened to a book that I didn't want to end, but this one fully exceeded my (low) expectations. It was very well-written with great characters and a fluid storyline; and though I usually avoid fiction narrated the authors, Graham Norton did an exemplary job. Highly recommended.

NXVIM Knockoff
Revisado: 04-12-25
As if we needed it, this book was additional confirmation that creativity died in the 20th century. I didn't expect War and Peace, but a little more depth would have been nice. The uninspired theme, though, was only half as annoying as the narration. Specifically, the psychopathic voice of Eloise was so grating, I had to skip most of those chapters. Definitely NOT recommended.

Is this fantasy-fiction??
Revisado: 02-19-25
**SPOILER ALERT** The mere idea that a physician would willingly accept a lucense suspension for something they didn't do is about as ridiculous as the notion that someone (who actually needs the funds) would decline millions of dollars in insurance money. Completely absurd.

Longer than necessary
Revisado: 11-07-24
This was well-written, with good narration. But ot was longer than it really needed to be. Too much introspection by the protagonist, who was a more than a little naive.

Middling
Revisado: 01-20-23
Two and a half stars, really. Like the main characters, this book was strange, but oddly interesting. There was no real movement until about halfway. The storyline was tired, but the writing was good.
The narrator didn't help at all. Each of his accents sounded forced (his french was particularly bad). Even his American accent sounded like he'd learned English from 1940s movies - and I think he's an American by birth
Would not recommend.

Great Harmon-y
Revisado: 09-21-22
As she did so well with "From Sand and Ash," Amy Harmon seamlessly interwove two intriguing storylines in "The Unknown Beloved." The murder mystery appealed to the true crime lover in me, while the love story left this hater of romance novels wanting more.
Ms. Harmon's literary style is unpretentious, beautiful and relatable. We've all experienced feelings like those of the book's characters. I was sorry when the story ended.
Rob Shapiro's narration was excellent, of course. His accents and inflections were spot-on.
Definitely recommended.

Historia
The sequel to the number one Audible Best Seller Earthcore, Mount Fitz Roy continues the tale of Patrick O’Doyle and Bertha Lybrand, who were part of the horror show that occurred far below the mountains of Utah. They learn that the "mother of all motherlodes” discovered there was not unique, that there is another deposit similar to it three miles beneath the towering peak of Cerro Chaltén on the disputed border between Chile and Argentina. O'Doyle, a middle-aged former member of a disgraced black-ops unit, gets his aging team back together to go after this fortune.

...especially if you've read the first book.
This sequel is evidence of Scott Sigler's indisputable talent. The story was interesting, the characters were well-developed, and the overall writing was superb (though, the last 10 chapters were unnecessarily tedious).
Ray Porter's narration was icing on the cake.
Highly recommended.

Not awful, but scattered
Revisado: 09-14-22
This book wanted to be and could've been bigger (and certainly better) than it was. The idea was good, but the execution was poor. There were tangential events in the story and unnecessary dialogue. Jonathan Davis' narration was pretty good, but I won't be moving on the series.

A Sufficient Diversion
Revisado: 02-10-22
I thought this book would be a story filled with WWII sociipolitical intrigue. What I experienced, however, was a cozy mystery/romance novel with strong female empowerment themes. The narrator who performed Drew's voice did so in an exaggerated, annoyingly stereotypical way, but the other two were excellent. The writing wasn't awful, but I would only cautiously recommend this book.

Historia
Paris in 1895: Alfred Dreyfus, a young Jewish officer, has just been convicted of treason, sentenced to life imprisonment at Devil's Island, and stripped of his rank in front of a baying crowd of 20,000. Among the witnesses to his humiliation is Georges Picquart, the ambitious, intellectual, recently promoted head of the counterespionage agency that Dreyfus had passed secrets to the Germans. At first, Picquart firmly believes in Dreyfus' guilt. But it is not long after Dreyfus is delivered to his desolate prison that Picquart stumbles on information that leads him to suspect that there is still a spy at large in the French military.

Interesting
Revisado: 08-26-21
The lengths to which some people go to maintain power is fully detailed in this story. It's all the more striking when you understand that the novel is based on a true story.
The book is longer than it needed to be and the ending was succinct and anticlimatic; but Mr. Harris' writing is excellent as usual, so it's definitely worth the journey.
