Historia
Hard-boiled detective Sam Spade is hired to locate a client's sister by tailing the sister's companion. Spade's partner Miles Archer takes on the assignment, and quickly both Archer and the man he was shadowing are murdered. As Spade pursues the mystery of his partner's death, he is drawn into a circle of colorful characters, and they are all after a legendary statuette of a falcon that had long ago been made for King Charles of Spain. Encrusted with jewels, it is worth a fortune.

One of the Best Narrations I’ve Heard
Revisado: 08-04-20
William Dufris gave one of the best recordings I’ve heard with this performance. His ability to play multiple characters that include female roles amazed me. Of course the story is classic noir. It was sad to hear of his passing earlier this year.

The Making of the President: 1960 revolutionized the way modern presidential campaigns are reported. Reporting from within the campaign for the first time on record, White’s extensive research and access to all parties involved set the bar for campaign coverage and remains unparalleled. White conveyed, in magnificent detail and with exquisite pacing, the high-stakes drama; he painted the unforgettable, even mythic story of JFK versus Nixon; and, most of all, he imbued the nation’s presidential election process with grandeur.

A Timely Book
Revisado: 07-28-20
This book provides almost a real-time view of people and events surrounding the 1960. It presents contemporary portraits of Kennedy and Nixon as they were then and not from a revisionist historic perspective. The style and reporting is a little dated but that makes the book more valuable because it makes the history fresh. The narrator is a bit irritating- mumbles sometimes, get worked up in other places- and is a little distracting. To compare the men in the election of 1960 with those of the current 2020 election is depressing though. Regardless of which candidate you support in this election they seem to pale in stature compared to those running in the 1960 primaries and election.

Historia
Within eight turbulent months in 1974 Gerald Ford went from the United States House of Representatives, where he was the minority leader, to the White House as the country's first and only unelected president. His unprecedented rise to power, after Richard Nixon's equally unprecedented fall, has garnered the lion's share of scholarly attention devoted to America's 38th president. But Gerald Ford's (1913-2006) life and career in and out of Washington spanned nearly the entire 20th century.

Balanced and Much-Needed Biography
Revisado: 05-23-20
The book presents a fairly balanced portrait of Gerald Ford. While his tenure as President was very short, he provided much-needed leadership to heal the deep divisions in the country left by Watergate and the Vietnam War.

Great Narration and Survey of California
Revisado: 05-06-20
The only complaint I have about the book is there are some significant discrepancies in numbers and dates between the book and the audiobook. I don't know if that's from the narration or the production. Otherwise this book is a great introduction to major aspects of California history.

Golda Meir was a world figure unlike any other. Born in tsarist Russia in 1898, she immigrated to America in 1906 and grew up in Milwaukee, where from her earliest years she displayed the political consciousness and organizational skills that would eventually catapult her into the inner circles of Israel's founding generation. Moving to mandatory Palestine in 1921 with her husband, the passionate socialist joined a kibbutz but soon left and was hired at a public works office by the man who would become the great love of her life.

Great Biography but a Mediocre Narrator
Revisado: 01-13-20
This biography was an excellent story of Golda Meir. I remember her when I was growing up in the early 1970's.
I did not like the narrator. She mumbled throughout the book. What's worse during the recording there were several instances of faint but audible background noises (like a dog barking in one place) that made the narrator sound unprofessional.

No college basketball coach has ever dominated the sport like John Wooden. His UCLA teams reached unprecedented heights in the 1960s and '70s, capped by a run of ten NCAA championships in twelve seasons and an eighty-eight-game winning streak, records that stand to this day. Wooden also became a renowned motivational speaker and writer, revered for his "Pyramid of Success." The portrait that emerges from Davis's remarkable biography is of a man in full, whose life story still resonates today.

Great Story- Sloppy Narration
Revisado: 10-23-19
When I listened to this book I followed along with the hard copy in many parts. In several instances the narration differed significantly from the text- in one instance the narrator said something happened "in the second half" while the author wrote "in the first half." In several instances the narrator referred to TV station "KTLA" as "CTLA." What also bothers me about the narration is referring to "Bryon Nelson" instead of Byron Nelson (the golfer) AND mispronouncing "Nicklaus" as in Jack Nicklaus.
Otherwise a great story- a little too much reliance on anecdotes but still a great story of a great coach.

A Magisterial and Much Needed Biography
Revisado: 10-13-19
When I started listening to this book, I had accepted a conservative version of a presidential history of an adversary thwarting the campaigns of Richard Nixon in 1960 and Barry Goldwater in 1964. As I came to learn about the life and work of Nelson Rockefeller I saw those campaigns from a much-needed different perspective. What I appreciate about this biography and the life and legacy of Nelson Rockefeller was his belief in pragmatic and moderate government that was not ideologically rigid, and his ability to work with Democrats and Republicans in achieving goals. Listening to this book in 2019 is heartbreaking when one sees how the leaders in our country- Democrat and Republican alike- have lost that ability to work together to solve common problems that Rockefeller seemed to embody.

Historia
The English Bible was born in defiance, in exile, in flight, and in a form of exodus, the very elements that empowered William Tyndale to bring the English scripture to the common citizen. Being “a stranger in a strange land,” the very homesickness he struggled with gave life to the words of Jesus, Paul, and to the wandering Moses. Tyndale’s efforts ultimately cost him his life, but his contribution to English spirituality is measureless. Even five centuries after his death at the stake, Tyndale’s presence looms wherever English is spoken.

Speculative, Ruminating and Uneven
Revisado: 08-26-19
After listening to this book, I gained a deeper appreciation for not only Tyndale's translation of The Bible into English but his contribution to the English language and literature. What bothered me about the book were:
1) The author's drawing parallels to Walt Whitman and other American writes who lived over 300 years after Tyndale's death.
2) Too much speculation and ruminating on Tyndale's imagination and thought process in his process of translating The Bible
3) While there was plenty of discussion around Henry VIII, Martin Luther, and Sir Thomas More, and others, I would have liked more discussion of historical context.
However I do appreciate the author's love and respect for Tyndale's Bible and The Bible as God's Word, which come through in this book.

Historia
It was the election that would ultimately give America "Camelot" and its tragic aftermath. 1960 is a stunning recreation of the bare-knuckle politics of the primaries, the party conventions' backroom dealings, the unprecedented television debates, along with hot-button issues of race, religion, and foreign policy. And, at the center of it all, three future presidents - Lyndon Johnson, John F. Kennedy, and Richard Nixon. In this essential work of history, David Pietrusza chronicles 1960's struggle for power by bringing to life its towering events and personalities, unlocking its secrets, and turning expert scholarship into rich, human storytelling.

Great Story Told by a Shoddy Narrator
Revisado: 05-30-19
The narration is shoddy. The narrator is careless with some words like "presemptive" instead of "presumptive," and also used "Todd Sorensen" in one instance instead of "Ted Sorensen," JFK's speechwriter. The narration is also irritating because the narrator's tone is smart-alecky and lacks seriousness and credibility.
What I appreciate about the story though is how the author presented a pre-Camelot version of John F. Kennedy. It is without the hagiography that is part of our current revisionist history of that period. I also appreciate his balanced and objective presentation of future President Richard Nixon.
