To take it for granted: be wise and try to understand what behind the horizon…
Revisado: 05-04-25
It is at least commendable that Mr Dalio dedicates time - and a big effort - to better understand the cycles of life - and to elucidate and systematize them for a broader audience. I, as one, am very grateful for his insights and the shared knowledge….

Julian Barnes does not need an introduction. But his short (what a pity!) reminiscing about ideas and facts of his life are intelligent and thought provoking even when kind of hilarious… either for the text or his reading… do not miss it!

Historia
In the twilight of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, a young cavalry officer is invited to a dance at the home of a rich landowner. There - with a small act of attempted charity - he commits a simple faux pas. But from this seemingly insignificant blunder comes a tale of catastrophe arising from kindness and of honour poisoned by self-regard. Beware of Pity has all the intensity and the formidable sense of torment and of character of the very best of Zweig's work. Definitive translation by the award-winning Anthea Bell.

Social Justice Fallacies

Historia
The quest for social justice is a powerful crusade of our time, with an appeal to many different people, for many different reasons. But those who use the same words do not always present the same meanings. Clarifying those meanings is the first step toward finding out what we agree on and disagree on. From there, it is largely a question of what the facts are. Social Justice Fallacies reveals how many things that are thought to be true simply cannot stand up to documented facts, which are often the opposite of what is widely believed.

Pragmatism x Ideology: A Lesson
Revisado: 08-17-24
The renowned scholar-author gives us an oasis in the desert of Academia and Public Policy thought. Throughout the chapters in which he addresses each and every issue concerning the fallacies that abound in the political discourse of modern times, his wisdom and down-to- earth analyses should be an example for those who care, and want to do something about about a (so-called) social agenda.

Historia
Theodore Dalrymple, almost singlehandedly, revived the languishing Essay and in so doing became Britain’s answer to Montaigne. In this, his first foray into the Short Story form, he proves himself a rival of Anton Chekhov. His many devoted fans will be delighted. "Some truth can be told only in the form of fiction. That is why I chose to write these stories." -- Theodore Dalrymple

Dalrymple of the good old days
Revisado: 08-13-24
The stories are vintage Dalrymple. The impasses he brings to life and the irony while dealing with them are excellent social criticism - and (maybe) one of the best forms to deal with life’s dramas: irony, what else with so much cynicism? Behind the façade and good behavior of uptight Englishman (woman), the impatience and carelessness towards your fellow human neighbor…. empathy has no place in the world he brings us!

The first short story collection by the Pulitzer Prize-winning author and master of the form since her number one New York Times best seller Unaccustomed Earth. It is uncommon to find good literature written in a second language. The examples that come to mind (Wilde, Nabokov, Beckett, Conrad …) only prove the point. But this authoress writes with flavor and makes for a very good entertainment. Taste it !

Historia
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

For those of the same backgrounds - or differing ones - anyone can profit from hearing these many stories unfolding in front of our very eyes and presenting unheard of heroes whose example mark many lives. You do not need to subscribe to all there is here (and elsewhere) but the lessons and the apology of ethics and good character are worth repeating for they bear fruit mostly through the strong imprint that they leave. It’s like walking the talking as commonly said…

Historia
In the 25 years after 1989, the world enjoyed the deepest peace in history. In The Rise and Fall of Peace on Earth, the eminent foreign policy scholar Michael Mandelbaum examines that remarkable quarter century, describing how and why the peace was established and then fell apart. Mandelbaum argues that the widespread peace ended because three major countries put an end to it with aggressive nationalist policies aimed at overturning the prevailing political arrangements in their respective regions.
