Jason Bourne rewrite
Revisado: 08-06-16
I found this story and writing style a cliche like all the schlock coming out of Hollywood. Too predictable and corny for my tastes, especially the ending. If only the writer had given the main character some flaws like real people have.

A refreshing and entertaining novel from a modern Arab Israeli perspective. An angle not often seen in the the Israeli Arab narrative. A highly recommended work of fiction!

Historia
The Prime Ministers is the first and only insider account of Israeli politics from the founding of the Jewish State to the near-present day. It reveals stunning details of life-and-death decision-making, top-secret military operations and high level peace negotiations. The Prime Ministers brings listeners into the orbits of world figures, including Menachem Begin, Yitzhak Rabin, Ronald Reagan, Jimmy Carter, Henry Kissinger, Yasser Arafat, Margaret Thatcher, Princess Diana and the Lubavitcher Rebbe.

Somewhat interesting
Revisado: 10-19-15
I enjoyed many of the behind the scenes anecdotes but found the author's blatantly self righteous right wing bias annoying. His obvious support for Begin over the others was frustrating. And his writing style was pompous and overblown.
The narrator was poorly suited as his pronunciation of many of the Hebrew words was laughable and embarrassingly poor.

With holy chutzpah, Tenenbom boldly goes where no Jew has gone before, at times risking his life as he assumes the identities of Tobi the German and even Abu Ali in order to probe into the many stories in this strange land and poke holes in all of them.

Difficult to read
Revisado: 10-05-15
What disappointed you about Catch the Jew!?
I thought the author's opinions of the people he meets very insulting. He writes in a very condescending tone. I acknowledged this is supposed to be somewhat satirical but I found the writing quite tedious. The author seems to believe he's a lot more witty and clever than he actually is!
What was most disappointing about Tuvia Tenenbom’s story?
It seemed like the author considers the problems of the Middle East one big joke and didn't seem to be able to take anyone seriously. I found his musings about his surroundings very juvenile with little understanding of the nuances of the characters, history and passion of the people and places he encounters.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
I couldn't even get through half of it!
Any additional comments?
A waste of my book credit!

Corny & Predictable
Revisado: 10-05-15
What would have made Once We Were Brothers better?
Although the story of the Holocaust is tragic and compelling, this book in particular was poorly written and oversimplified the terrible events of the time. I found the characters very one dimensional, shallow and stereotypical. The narrative was very unoriginal and corny in parts with many inconsistencies in the story line. It read more like a teenage adventure story! I also found the writing style very amateurish, dripping with over sentimentality! I would not recommend this to anyone looking for a realistic account of the Holocaust experience. The protagonists lacked the depth and nuance one would expect from such characters.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
The accents and mispronunciations of certain non-English words were terrible.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Disappointment, derision and the feeling of condescension from the author's perspective. It felt like an insult to my intelligence. At parts in the story I found myself guessing the plot, rolling my eyes in disbelief and screaming in frustration.
Any additional comments?
A waste of money!

Great Thriller!
Revisado: 09-11-15
This story was very engaging and entertaining, and one of the most unbiased perspectives of the Middle East conflict I've ever read. I highly recommend it and think it would make an excellent movie too!
The narration of the non American accents on the other hand was poorly done and not very convincing. In particular his portrayal of the female Arab accents was terrible and stereotypically "Hollywood". Having lived in the Middle East myself I can attest to the fact that Arab women do not all sound the same and definitely don't have the inflection he portrayed!

Meh....
Revisado: 08-19-15
I was looking for something more interesting and was somewhat disappointed. I found the writing to be too "wordy" in parts, like the author was trying too hard. And the fact that the 2 travellers were constantly bickering took away from "the adventure" and made me realize that one really has to find a compatible travel partner to really enjoy a road trip.
I got the distinct feeling that the author didn't really enjoy the trip much and just wanted to get it over with like it was a chore, or maybe something to check off his "bucket list".

On the morning of December 26, 2004, on the southern coast of Sri Lanka, Sonali Deraniyagala lost her parents, her husband, and her two young sons in the tsunami she miraculously survived. In this brave and searingly frank memoir, she describes those first horrifying moments and her long journey since. She has written an engrossing, unsentimental, beautifully poised account: as she struggles through the first months following the tragedy, furiously clenched against a reality that she cannot face and cannot deny....

Disappointed
Revisado: 06-11-15
This book was very well written and narrated. However for me personally I was somewhat disappointed. I have been through a similar experience of losing my only child and was looking for some words of wisdom to help me deal with my own excruciating pain. If there was a message I could take away it would be the cliche that the pain is "softened" over time.
