Historia
Elliot Ackerman left the American military ten years ago, but his time in Afghanistan and Iraq with the Marines and later as a CIA paramilitary officer marked him indelibly. When the Taliban began to close in on Kabul in August 2021 and the Afghan regime began its death spiral, he found himself pulled back into the conflict. Afghan nationals who had worked closely with the American military and intelligence communities for years now faced brutal reprisal and sought frantically to flee the country with their families.

This is a beautiful book to listen to. The story captures you and feel the depth of emotion that these people felt in their committment to rescue the Aghans.
I can't wait to read another of Ackerman's books.

Historia
Decades before the American Revolution, Benjamin Franklin lamented that English settlers were constantly fleeing over to the Indians - but Indians almost never did the same. Tribal society has been exerting an almost gravitational pull on Westerners for hundreds of years, and the reason lies deep in our evolutionary past as a communal species. The most recent example of that attraction is combat veterans who come home to find themselves missing the incredibly intimate bonds of platoon life.

Historia
An 11-year-old boy's violated corpse is found in a town park. Eyewitnesses and fingerprints point unmistakably to one of Flint City's most popular citizens. He is Terry Maitland, Little League coach, English teacher, husband, and father of two girls. Detective Ralph Anderson, whose son Maitland once coached, orders a quick and very public arrest. Maitland has an alibi, but Anderson and the district attorney soon add DNA evidence to go with the fingerprints and witnesses. Their case seems ironclad.

A Disappointment
Revisado: 06-12-18
While the book is rather good, it is far less that what I have come to love about Stephen King's stories. I am always prepared to be on the edge of my seat within the first few pages, or within the first hour. This story has me waiting and waiting for something "King-like" to happen, and I am in the 14th hour.
It almost seems like gratuitous writing. I have not done this very often, but I will most likely not finish the book.

Historia
At the height of World War II, Oak Ridge, Tennessee, was home to 75,000 residents, consuming more electricity than New York City. But to most of the world, the town did not exist. Thousands of civilians - many of them young women from small towns across the South - were recruited to this secret city, enticed by solid wages and the promise of war-ending work. Kept very much in the dark, few would ever guess the true nature of the tasks they performed each day in the hulking factories in the middle of the Appalachian Mountains.

Would you consider the audio edition of The Girls of Atomic City to be better than the print version?
I did not read the print version. I only listened to the audio edition.
What did you like best about this story?
This books was filled with facts, all presented in a fascinating and exciting way.
What about Cassandra Campbell’s performance did you like?
She was an excellent reader. She provided emotion where it was called for, and presented the facts without emotion or judgment.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
There were MANY moments that were moving. It would be very difficult to select only one.
Any additional comments?
This is a superb piece of writing as well as reading. Filled with facts, Denise Kiernan's book and Cassandra Campbell's reading take the listener back and forth, from life at Oak Ridge to the challenges of the development of "the gadget." Attention to detail is very obvious on every page, as well as respect for the people and the circumstances.

Wonderful!
Revisado: 02-20-13
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Put this at the top, no, actually, at Number 2, of your reading list. You MUST read RELIC first! Terrific narration coupled with a great story makes for wonderful reading!
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Cabinet of Curiosities?
Trying to select a particular memorable moment is far too difficult - the book holds your interest on every page. All of the moments are packed with detail, excitement, sometimes dread and anticipation.
Have you listened to any of Jonathan Marosz’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
This is the first time that I listened to him. But, I will definitely look for books that he has read. He was excellent!
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I didn't laugh OR cry. I barely breathed! I read in the car for the most part. I prayed for red lights.

Applauding The Relic
Revisado: 12-28-12
Would you consider the audio edition of Relic to be better than the print version?
I cannot compare the audio with the print version because I have not read the print version.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
The plot was exciting from the first page. I do most of my reading in the car, and I found myself gripping the steering wheel! Most of my reading is non-fiction, but I occasionally take a break and read a novel. What a great find! I am so happy that I am reading this. The story is unusual in setting as well as plot. It is great to listen and imagine the people, trapped in the Museum of Natural History, and the fear that they are feeling.
What does David Colacci bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
So much! Colacci is by far the best reader that I have listened to! He reads so well, and adapts his voice to the different characters, that it is like I am listening to a play rather than listening to a book.I will now do searches specifically for books that he has narrated.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
It made me scared and excited! I forget everything and become immersed in the plot.

One of the most popular Fortune articles in many years was a cover story called "What It Takes to Be Great." Geoff Colvin offered new evidence that top performers in any field - from Tiger Woods and Winston Churchill to Warren Buffett and Jack Welch - are not determined by their inborn talents. Greatness doesn't come from DNA but from practice and perseverance honed over decades.
