A huge NO—don’t spend your time on this one
Revisado: 01-05-25
I intensely disliked this book. I felt like it started slowly, but I stuck with it. But it just wandered around in the desert – around and around and around. And the ending is stunningly absurd and eye rolling to me. I am not minimizing the subject matter that drives the ending. But this is no way to tackle it. One giant UGH from me on this book. So off-putting as a reading and listening experience.
Equally bad for me was the narration. I appreciate the effort, but the attempts at the various voices were like nails on a chalkboard. Never again will I spend time or money on a book read by this person.

Terrific installment in this series. Great characters, compelling story, ratcheting tensions. And this narrator is my all-time favorite.

Strong compelling characters, as usual. I really enjoy these books. Meh resolution of the mystery. Total shortcut to wrap it up. But good overall. I hope there are more in the series.

Historia
Amateur sleuth Stevie Bell needs a good murder. After catching a killer at her high school, she’s back at home for a normal (that means boring) summer. But then she gets a message from the owner of Sunny Pines, formerly known as Camp Wonder Falls - the site of the notorious unsolved case, the Box in the Woods Murders. Back in 1978, four camp counselors were killed in the woods outside of the town of Barlow Corners, their bodies left in a gruesome display.

Enjoyable and compelling – until kooky resolution
Revisado: 07-19-23
I really like these characters and the truly devious series. I appreciate the author. I enjoyed this a lot until chapter 28, when the quality fell apart. The twist was ridiculous, and cheap. This is a common affliction in murder mysteries, in my experience. Disappointed to see the author opted for such a lazy finish in terms of a one-chapter explainer of all near the end.
I cannot relate to the reviews that complain about the woke agenda or difficulty with pronouns. Massive nitpicking. Really, if you can’t follow the occasional pronoun that you don’t like, why are you living in the 21st-century?

A long slow slog to nowhere
Revisado: 07-14-23
I really enjoyed the first book in the series—compelling characters, a bit of humor, Interesting story. Unfortunately, this installment was a struggle to get through for me. Same characters, but little character development. And then an endless “climax”— I kept hitting +30 just to move it along. Very strong narration as always. I hope there is another book in the series. In general, I appreciate this author. And perhaps she would re-capture the energy and the spirit of the first in the series.

In 2016, Rob Delaney’s one-year-old son, Henry, was diagnosed with a brain tumor. The family had moved from Los Angeles to London with their two young boys when Rob’s wife was pregnant with Henry, their third. The move was an adventure that would bind them even more tightly together as they navigated the novelty of London, the culture clashes, and the funhouse experience of Rob’s fame—thanks to his role as co-creator and co-star of the hit series Catastrophe. Henry’s illness was a cataclysm that changed everything about their lives.

Historia
When Robin Ellacott opens an unexpected delivery, she is horrified to discover that it contains a woman's severed leg. Her boss, private detective Cormoran Strike, is less surprised but just as alarmed. He suspects that four people from his past could be responsible - and any one of them is capable of sustained and unspeakable brutality. With the police focusing on the one suspect Strike has essentially ruled out, he and Robin take matters into their own hands and delve into the dark and twisted worlds of the other three men.

Terrific series, terrific book, beyond terrific narration
Revisado: 12-23-22
Another great installment in the Cormoran Strike series. Terrific writing, complex characters, rich backstory and character development. Everything I want in a murder mystery. I could do with a little less gore, but compared to other writers, this is a relatively small amount.
Also, Robert Glenister is amazing. Listening to his narration is like listening to a full cast of characters. Mesmerizing.

Fabulous—rich characters and great narration
Revisado: 10-22-22
The CB strike series on audible is fabulous. And this first book is terrific. The protagonists are simultaneously likable and complex. They work hard and persevere. Robert Glenister as narrator is outrageously good. I have listened to each book in the series repeatedly, in part because of Glenister. This book in particular is deft with backstory and the compelling unwinding of the mystery.I love it. All of it. Cheers to the author and the narrator.

Historia
When novelist Owen Quine goes missing, his wife calls in private detective Cormoran Strike. At first, Mrs. Quine just thinks her husband has gone off by himself for a few days - as he has done before - and she wants Strike to find him and bring him home. But as Strike investigates, he discovers that Quine's disappearance is no coincidence. The novelist has just completed a manuscript featuring poisonous pen-portraits of almost everyone he knows. If the novel were published, it would ruin lives - meaning that almost everyone in his life would have motives to silence him.

else. Cheers to the author, and to the narrator.
