Historia
An intricate tale of love, haunting memories, and renewal, Second Glance begins in current-day Vermont, where an old man puts a piece of land up for sale and unintentionally raises protest from the local Abenaki Indian tribe, who insist it's a burial ground. When odd, supernatural events plague the town of Comtosook, a ghost hunter is hired by the developer to help convince the residents that there's nothing spiritual about the property.

Satisfied enough. suspenseful Ending.
Revisado: 02-01-25
Good story but not over excited about it - somewhat of an effort to keep track of characters & times, or maybe it was a bit vague in places. I enjoyed it, more or less, and I liked the Ross & Eathan characters, plus and the cultural aspects, as well as the Supernatural! But the lack of clarity in transition of time era took away from the story in my personal opinion. Little difficult to get invested in each character except for the “Eathan” character. Ross was ok but not as well as Eathan. This is not meant to be a terrible review, just stating my views when reading it over several days instead of all at once. Would that make a difference i wonder? Usually i read all in one day or 2 at most. Give it a try by all means, its very listenable overall. 3 stars

In the course of her everyday work, career-driven assistant district attorney Nina Frost prosecutes child molesters and works determinedly to ensure that a legal system with too many loopholes keeps these criminals behind bars. But when her own five-year-old son, Nathaniel, is traumatized by a sexual assault, Nina and her husband, Caleb, a quiet and methodical stone mason, are shattered, ripped apart by an enraging sense of helplessness in the face of a futile justice system that Nina knows all too well.

Important Subject
Revisado: 01-13-25
Good enough story for sure, touches all the various emotions. Difficult subject - But im basically satisfied with the whole thing. Not really overwhelmed here. Kind of hits the “hard to admit we all would want to do the same- (fantasy) idea” in this situation, however, very wrong or violent for something like this happening to our child, no joke, but nothing happens the same way, nothing is guaranteed, plus… its against the law…so its a good idea to pay attention here as to the consequences she faces, as well as recognizing her obvious lack of logic just before doing what she did, understandable, but must think rationally by all means, and go with brain, not heart and nerves….nevertheless, a very wrong decision. Like i said good subject. I feel the subject is a VAST & Difficult Subject - SO in reality, it could be SO much worse than this! I also think the trauma and inner thoughts of the victim would’ve been heavier IMO. Not enough impact, for me personally, if the author was going for certain points on the subject. If not, then ok. Then maybe lacking - Uh purpose, as well as impact? Im not sure… not disappointed, but not struck with amazement. Not too picky of a person here either, so Im having trouble figuring out what is missing for me. Others may like it just fine. Fairly good surpise there at the end though! Maybe this story overall was too subtle?

Star Count , due to one “short” having One Sentence
Revisado: 01-07-25
Great sick ideas, but felt a few or more of them being Big Teasers, left Hanging big time, and disappointed as one of them only had one sentence…however a very deep, deep thought where I had to think about for a little bit, so its probably best left as is - “Assurances of the Extinction…” by other author.
Also, i really Layton quite a bit. He always has great settings! Plus, includes the morbidly dark with a hometown feel, & adds in sexuality, with some thriller killer weirdos - making interesting and Crazy readings.
A few short stories here, Id rather hear more though. It feels like being teased with unfinished, good material! And WHY the one sentence? Really? Why not just choose a different one!?
If you like dark, on the sick side, and cliffhanger horror fiction, you’ll love this!

Historia
My fiancé brought me tea and scrambled eggs in bed that morning, and we snuggled together, talking about buying our rings, and about our perfect wedding next year. Then we headed into town. He held my hand and gazed at the ring I liked best, a smile spreading slowly over his face. Then a glass of bubbly to celebrate. I felt flushed, excited and ready for the rest of my life with the man I loved. We race to get on the train home. It screams to a halt and I run towards its open doors. Made it. I think he’s right behind me — but when I turn around, he’s gone.

Shocking End / Must Wait for the Mystery to Unravel

Definitely did not expect the ending. Somewhat of a hang as well, but a good shock. Kept me guessing who the culprit was, and eventually figured it out. Ok story with a sad scenario, made me sad and mad both.

Not long enough and No purpose for an end
Revisado: 11-19-24
Wanted more, so i enjoyed it, however it is like getting half of a story, as if the author was trying to give those who like the stories within what they want, and also giving the fans an inside look at Watership Down (after the fact), which we do want both, but it leaves listener too distant this way - must be inc, into the story as first book did . Nonetheless, feels like im left hanging a bit, and there was no real angle to the story - like i was waiting to see the Big climax and it didnt happen. Too many things left unsaid here. But will always love the tales & the rabbits of watership down. I missed a few characters though definitely & really wish the narrator from the first book would have done this one too! With the bit of english or other accent!

Historia
Korede is bitter. How could she not be? Her sister, Ayoola, is many things: the favorite child, the beautiful one, possibly sociopathic. And now Ayoola’s third boyfriend in a row is dead. Korede’s practicality is the sisters’ saving grace. She knows the best solutions for cleaning blood, the trunk of her car is big enough for a body, and she keeps Ayoola from posting pictures of her dinner to Instagram when she should be mourning her “missing” boyfriend. Not that she gets any credit. Korede has long been in love with a kind, handsome doctor at the hospital where she works.

Ok idea - But Lacking…
Revisado: 10-20-24
I could not connect with the story except in a few areas; could use some more depth in character setting descriptions of people places things, culture, etc., maybe how sister became that way, as an example. Show us more, dont tell us. Invite the reader into the room, or the area with more emotion, and perception
And influence. Maybe even a secondary plot that meets in the middle per se. Just more. Narrator wasn’t too bad, though didnt help the hollow story.

Does KING ever NOT surprise us?
Revisado: 09-23-24
For I was reduced to a sniveling mess at the end - with a single word spoken; and my mind “soared” when I realized what was exactly happening! Omg, i lost it! That was So great! His lingual prowess is beyond me, and the ability to subtly suspend the build-up, and down to earth setting & characters in this one, made it worth reading!
Id say - This is a lil Tame for King, as to what Ive noticed as a new reader of his work, but not new to movies based on his books. Im so glad I waited to read his books, & as many as possible this late in life, because They mean so much more today, than would have a years ago! His ability to pull me in all kinds of directions is an absolutely wonderful revelation! His books are extremely way more awesome than I realized or thought they would be! There’s something said about “waiting” being more “powerful”! And it is true! (Welcome! Yes, come this way! The water is very Fine!).

UNLIKE ANY STORY EVER… AND I LOVE IT!
Revisado: 06-24-24
To think that SO many men & others underestimated a creature they did not understand, or try to, and that is in itself, a message for all of us. Fantastically written, deep and poignant. The movie is a big favorite of mine, but the book is wonderful. At the end of the movie, these words are shown…
“Unable to perceive the shape of you. I find you all around me. Your presence fills my eyes with your love. It humbles my heart, For You Are All Around Me.”
Just a beautiful story, with the most intriguing set of circumstances.

My guide book!
Revisado: 05-21-24
Yes yes- if you don’t listen to this again & save it - I’m sorry. Too much to say here but let me summarize - its like I’ve trained for this book. My Dad taught me so much of this on purpose & not on purpose, as well as by accident, This book is the excellent brilliant organized version of what I learned from him, myself, and everything around me through time, and i’m still learning and evolving… it never ends. Felt the connection with all this - and very moved as to his Dads survival. I was floored! I was speechless. This whole book is amazing - with awesome narration! Loved it! Great to hear about Texas in there too. I cant say enough about this whole book and all the stories & lessons - Bravo! to the author ….🙏Thank you for writing this! If my dad were alive still, he would’ve killed for this book! Lol. Just about! Highly recommended to anyone!

The summer in question started out with hot, fun-filled days and new friendships. We had just turned thirteen and had our whole lives ahead of us. But that was before her. Before we became known as the Hixton Five and our lives become defined by one night. It’s hard to believe twenty years have passed since she was locked away. But now she’s free and strange things have started to happen. When I close my eyes, the creeping anxiety and fear is overwhelming and all too real. Because the monster is back, and I know she has a score to settle with us.

Fairly Good Twist
Revisado: 03-08-24
Somewhat unclear characteristics to the two main females regarding Rosy responding to Hannah’s accepting help from the writer/stranger - so the table turns & its not clear enough who is who, & how one mothers the other, only to switch it around suddenly, when we’d just heard that Rosy often had false alarms, needed help, unlike herself suddenly? Could be shown a different way - if shes normally not like that - but the whole idea seemed uncharacteristic-like. - Just my personal opinion - nothing distracting though.
Furthermore, while on the subject- , I feel in this instance Hannah would’ve found ANY other way to get back to her apartment . BUT NOT from the guy who was “only wanting to make a profit “ per se - from her tragic past, as the author had us guessing quite a ways through the story - i get it, but unfortunately, cliche. Also - Could due without the dog’s name, which is also cliche… and the possible romance thing , maybe done in a more subtle, way wouldn’t be so predictable. And It was clear the guy was “somebody” important to their past - but i feel it was a little like “grasping for straws” (this phrase is cliche). And using the idea to make him a mysterious character is Understandable, yet also “cliche.” IMO- Good as a side piece, to incorporate, but maybe done a different way?
Im surprised though, that I wasnt that upset about Rosy at the end,, just annoyed….& upset only at what she had done. Dealing with CPTSD yes, but it seems to be only saved as an effort to have a big ending, The twist was fairly good though. Did Not see that coming! The portions of childhood were gripping and suspenseful though! Very disturbing, and written well! 3 stars, for fairly Good, not bad!
