Not my usual genre, but glad I picked it

Been following her web series for a while so think of the book would be good too. OMG was I not prepared for how great it really was. Even knowing the history of the characters already did nothing to alleviate the impact of hearing it told in such detail.
Jaysea's ability to address traumas and encourage better mindset with healing, which has been a Hallmark of her reels and tiktoks, lost no fervor or impact in this book.
This will probably be one of the few audiobooks that I'll relisten to more than once and can't wait to see what she has in store for future stories. ❤️

Land-ho! Clyde and co. have finally—finally—made it to the City of Darkness. Which turns out to actually exist! One small problem though. Anyone and anything that sets foot on the island immediately disappears. Ceases to exist. Poof. To complete the quest, Clyde needs to figure out how to actually enter the city and steal the crown jewels . . . without getting stuck in the town forever. It's a foreboding, dark place (obviously), where corruption is rampant. And maybe worse: the game rules Clyde's gotten so good at bending to his will? They don't seem to apply.

A little different from the norm

Like most first books in a series it was kinda droll starting out but eventually picks up. Humor is mostly dark with gallows humor sprinkled in and lots of creative cursing. I don't think I heard the same insult twice. Story was pretty good with a bit of an emotional trip.
Narrator did a good job setting the dry tone for a lot of the humor.

The cover threw me and quite a few others off at first. Turns out however that this was a fantastic book with so much potential for the future of the series. Full of humor and tactical workarounds and exploitations, which is one of my favorite things. Travis also brings so much of it to life that I probably would have breezed over if just reading it.
