Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Octopus was great, other characters not so much
Revisado: 02-21-25
Bought this title because of all the stellar reviews. The sample with commentary from the octopus was great - and that narrator is amazing! He hit just the right tone. However, the next two chapters which introduced some human characters were nowhere near as good as the beginning. It seemed pretty clear that I would not enjoy their stories, so I returned this. But I gave the performance five stars because the octopus was amazingly narrated! Obviously others enjoyed the book, but it is not my cup of tea.

Historia
Often compared to both Ruth Rendell and P.D. James, Deborah Crombie is internationally acclaimed for her deftly written mysteries that combine suspense, with lyrical prose. Sharply etched characters further enrich this story of tangled relationships and dark secrets. Twelve years after their divorce, Scotland Yard Superintendent Duncan Kincaid receives a phone call from his ex-wife Victoria asking for his help.

Story is boring, narrator is awful
Revisado: 02-16-25
I listened to this for ten hours then just couldn't take it any longer. I did not care at all about who the murderer was and the narrator simply makes everyone sound depressed. She has totally changed the character of Gemma from the earlier books so that she now sounds like a posh person who whispers everything. Was hoping that Crombie would provide a series to follow for a long time, and I got through the first several books, but no more . . .

A little long, but a good story
Revisado: 11-14-24
Although this story got off to a rather slow start and is really a bit too long,Tana French always delivers in the end. I have enjoyed all of her books. However, I'm hoping this is the last of the Cal Hooper series. The characters are fine, but not enough going on for a third book.

Good idea, but could have been executed better
Revisado: 11-14-24
The concept on which this book is based is interesting, but it is much too long! Unfortunately, the first three hours are spent droning on and on about the "death lady's" initial encounters, so it took me quite awhile to get engaged in the story - or to even get a glimpse of what the story was going to be. I did stick with it and found the last 1/3 more interesting, but if I had not been driving for several hours, I might have given up sooner. Also, for some odd reason, the narrator decided to make the death lady sound like an elderly cartoon character, which was so unpleasant that I fast forwarded through the less relevant parts of those segments. Her voice was really horrid.

Much too long and extremely boring
Revisado: 11-14-24
Most boring mystery I've read in ages! When I got this book, I hoped it would be the start of a long relationship with the series. But based on this example, I will never read another Jane Casey book. First, it is much, much too long - should have been cut by at least four hours. Second, the story is just dull. I finally left it about 3/4 of the way through because I honestly did not care at all who the killer or killers were or why the primary victim had been murdered. Finally, although the narrator does not have a bad voice, she is absolutely dreadful with the male characters! Almost all of them sound like cartoon characters.

"So I thought I might take up paragliding. You know, buy one on eBay and just jump off the cliff one morning." Emily Willows is middle-aged, widowed, wealthy, and bored. When she makes those flippant remarks to her son over coffee one Friday, she has no inkling that within a few hours she will be facing the most terrifying situation of her life.

Nothing like his previous books - extremely boring
Revisado: 07-18-23
I have listened to all the Smith and Kings Lake books by Peter Grainger and really loved them. But this new series is a crashing disappointment. First, this book is only five hours long. And the entire five hours is devoted to a single chase - that is, five hours of two women escaping from bad guys, being pursued in a car, and wandering around in the woods. So boring that I just fast-forwarded through most of the chase without missing anything important. This monotony is interspersed with some mundane police activities in which the characters are easily confused with one another. Regarding the title characters, Summer Lane is rather interesting, but Emily Willows is just whiny and irritating. Needless to say, I do not plan to waste my Audible credits on the rest of this series. I'm just hoping for more Smith and Kings Lake books!

Did not finish - totally confusing book
Revisado: 10-12-22
After 90 minutes, I still had no idea what was happening in this book, and I suddenly began to suspect that there might actually be two first-person characters talking instead of one. Maybe it would have been clearer in print, but the narrator used exactly the same voice for both. Since it was also not very interesting, I simply returned it.

It should have been just a mid-life fling. A guilty indiscretion that Neve Connolly could have weathered. An escape from 20 years of routine marriage to her overworked husband, and from her increasingly distant children. But when Neve pays a morning-after visit to her lover, Saul, and finds him brutally murdered, their pied-à-terre still heady with her perfume, all the lies she has so painstakingly stitched together threaten to unravel.

Stupid main character, disappointing ending
Revisado: 10-09-22
Nicci French books, in my experience, can be either great or complete duds. The writing is always excellent, but the problem with the duds is that the plots are so meandering and the characters' actions are so illogical.
In this one, for instance, the main character has neither the assertiveness to tell someone she barely knows that she can't come to dinner nor the sense, when questioned by the police, to simply stop talking, as she is under no obligation to do so. She also lacks the sense to ever consult an attorney during a weeks-long investigation where she is repeatedly questioned.
For me, the ending was also a disappointment. But if you would still like to give the book a try, just know that this is not really a murder mystery but a ten-hour journey inside this woman's head. Fortunately, she is a likeable character. And as mentioned, the writing is excellent.

Historia
Tabitha is not a murderer. When a body is discovered in Okeham, England, Tabitha is shocked to find herself being placed in handcuffs. It must be a mistake. She’d only recently moved back to her childhood hometown, not even getting a chance to reacquaint herself with the neighbors. How could she possibly be a murder suspect? As Tabitha is shepherded through the system, her entire life is picked apart and scrutinized - her history of depression and medications, her decision to move back to a town she supposedly hated, and her past relationship with the victim, her former teacher.

Boring and unpleasant
Revisado: 09-21-22
After 90 minutes of listening to an unpleasant and pretty stupid main character in a prison setting - then realizing that the entire book was going to take place in that same correctional institution with that same character - I decided that I could not bear another ten hours of this and returned it.
The part I heard was deadly boring, and I did not care at all what happened. But if you are really into prison life, perhaps you would enjoy eleven-plus hours of it.
My experience with Nicci French books - and I have read many - is that while most of them are well-written and cleverly plotted, every once in awhile you run into a dud. And sadly, this was one. So I will now try another.

Really good book, brilliant narrator!
Revisado: 08-13-22
This is the second book I have listened to narrated by Hope Davis, and she is truly the best narrator I have ever heard. She can do a multitude of voices and make all of them - of both genders - sound so different and natural that you forget this is just one person talking. As for the book, I have always loved Anna Quindlen's writing, and this one did not disappoint. If you begin to feel that nothing very surprising is happening with this nice family story, just wait - that will change dramatically!
