So refreshing
Revisado: 04-25-25
Gosh, I thought I might like this book based on recommendation but didn’t expect to love it so!
The story is so timeless and the characters are interesting and lovable.
The narrator does such an amazing job with the “cast” of voices and had me in stitches at times. With so many dark and violent or moody and serious tones out there, this book was just a breath of fresh air and truly had me feeling hope for humanity by the end (or at least peace with it anyways).
Would recommend for sure!

Weird story but Anne Hathaway does a great job! I know I’m reading this years after seeing the movie the first time. It’s interesting how different it is.

Historia
Over the past several years, Dr. Becky Kennedy—known to her followers as “Dr. Becky”—has been sparking a parenting revolution. Millions of parents, tired of following advice that either doesn’t work or simply doesn’t feel good, have embraced Dr. Becky’s empowering and effective approach, a model that prioritizes connecting with our kids over correcting them. Parents have long been sold a model of childrearing that simply doesn’t work. From reward charts to time outs, many popular parenting approaches are based on shaping behavior, not raising humans.

Great concept
Revisado: 12-20-24
The narration and delivery of this book were overall very good!
As a therapist and parent myself, I can affirm that one glaring hole in applying behavior therapy to kids is this misplaced focus on motives and assuming kids are bad or selfish. In reality when working with adults I’ve seen many folks who either grew up with serious issues that get them in trouble or the opposite, never get in trouble, but all done so out of fear of their own feelings and intimacy with others. This was not them developing healthy boundaries but simply complying with demands (or fighting them even when they didn’t need or want to).
One gripe for me is Kennedy being another IFS fanatic. Her mentions of the non evidence based approach were detracting for me and actually offered little explanation to the other, really great insights she had to offer.
That being said, I will definitely recommend this book to parents and therapists alike.

Deep down here by the dark water lived old Gollum, a small slimy creature. I don’t know where he came from, nor who or what he was. He was Gollum—as dark as darkness, except for two big round pale eyes in his thin face. He had a little boat, and he rowed about quite quietly on the lake; for lake it was, wide and deep and deadly cold.

Interesting story, greater voice acting
Revisado: 09-30-24
It’s hard to have seen the movies and go back to read these books. Usually I find that approach to make the world/characters expand and feel more interesting. As with lord of the rings, I find the hobbit to be a collection of neat characters and plot points but structured in a long, convoluted way with attention placed on the wrong parts of conflicts.
That being said, I loved Andy Serkis before and i am just as impressed with him again here.

Historia
As a young Christian man, Matthew Vines harbored the same basic hopes of most young people: to someday share his life with someone, to build a family of his own, to give and receive love. But when he realized he was gay, those hopes were called into question. The Bible, he’d been taught, condemned gay relationships. Feeling the tension between his understanding of the Bible and the reality of his same-sex orientation, Vines devoted years of intensive research into what the Bible says about homosexuality.

This book was so good (not too long or convoluted) and shared both emotionally powerful stories as well as grounded biblical study on the subject. Anyone wanting to say they believe the Bible whoever they stand, should read this resource and ask themselves where they stand afterward.

Educational but heavy
Revisado: 09-07-24
I knew opening this book that Harris would hate some hard truths but my gosh! I think anyone who wants to be an influencer, go into community health, and certainly politics should read this book. I’ll admit the first part of the book gives more autobiographical story that is quite easy to absorb and then about a third to halfway in, the VP is sort of sharing her the multiple fires she’s seen going on with our country from blatant racism, sex trafficking, global warming and corruption of powers (domestic and foreign). Honestly bring chocolate and tissues and take breaks to walk in the sunshine. It’s all stuff we need to be confronted and think about but can be so heavy for us empathic folks.
Overall glad she went back and narrated this edition of the book.

It’s 1984, and life has changed beyond recognition. Airstrip One, formerly known as Great Britain, is a place where Big Brother is always watching, and nobody can hide. Except, perhaps, for Winston Smith. Whilst working at the Ministry of Truth, rewriting history, he secretly dreams of freedom. And in a world where love and sex are forbidden, where it’s hard to distinguish between friend and foe, he meets Julia and O’Brien and vows to rebel.

Soul crushing
Revisado: 08-17-24
Per my title, this is a brutal story to read. I’m no fan of torture-porn in any media, though I have to admit the book does a great job of describing the concerns of a totalitarian state. As for the audio version, this made the grim story so accessible to me and I’m very impressed by the performances of each and every character!
Well done.

The company of the Ring is torn asunder. Frodo and Sam continue their journey alone down the great River Anduin - alone, that is, save for the mysterious creeping figure that follows wherever they go. This continues the classic tale begun in The Fellowship of the Ring, which reaches its awesome climax in The Return of the King.

Golem narrator FTW
Revisado: 05-09-24
My goodness, I tried to read this book years ago and had to stop due to it being so dense and my poor patience. Coming back to an audio format certainly helped but especially having renowned actor Andy Serkis (Golem) narrate was amazing!
He does a great job of making distinct voices for the various characters, has great pacing and clarity with his delivery, and is most entertaining in the multiple songs (want expecting to say that about a book but truly feels like I’m in middle earth listening to elves and hobbits chanting, ha ha.)
Would recommend this anyone over other versions of this book.
Can’t wait to catch up with Serkis in the second book.
