Historia
The status quo of tech today is untenable: we’re addicted to our devices, we’ve become increasingly polarized, our mental health is suffering and our personal data is sold to the highest bidder. This situation feels entrenched, propped up by a system of broken incentives beyond our control. So how do you shift an immovable status quo? Our guest today, Srdja Popovic, has been working to answer this question his whole life. As a young activist, Popovic helped overthrow Serbian dictator Slobodan Milosevic by turning creative resistance into an art form. His tactics didn't just challenge ...

Sunshine in an Audible Book!
Revisado: 02-26-25
Parrot Prose is a delightful and incredibly enjoyable listen on Audible. From the very first chapter, it’s clear that the characters and their storylines have been wonderfully developed from the original book, Trust the Terrier. As a listener, you can feel the growth and depth of the characters, making their journey all the more captivating.
Author DL Mitchell and narrator Allison Wang whisk you away for a mystery in stunning Coral Shores. The vivid descriptions of the location allow you to practically feel the warmth of the sun on your skin and the gentle ocean breeze as you imagine the beautiful coastline. (Bring your own sunscreen and margaritas!) The atmosphere is so well-crafted, that it’s easy to get lost in this picturesque setting.
The pacing of Parrot Prose is spot on, keeping you intrigued and entertained from start to finish. It’s a smooth ride, never feeling rushed, but always keeping you hooked. There’s a perfect balance of suspense, humor, and heartfelt moments, ensuring that you’re always invested in the unfolding events.
A standout aspect of the book is the underlying theme of nonprofit animal sanctuaries in Florida, particularly those dedicated to parrots and marine life. I found this element to be especially rewarding, as it sheds light on the tireless work done by these sanctuaries. Not only did I enjoy the mystery, but I also came away with a much greater appreciation for the important work these organizations do.
Overall, Parrot Prose is a delightful audiobook that combines great storytelling, engaging characters, and important causes. It’s the perfect vacation read (or listen!) that leaves you eagerly awaiting the next installment of Emily and Mike. I can't wait for the third book in the series!

Money - investing, personal finance, and business decisions - is typically taught as a math-based field, where data and formulas tell us exactly what to do. But in the real world people don’t make financial decisions on a spreadsheet. They make them at the dinner table, or in a meeting room, where personal history, your own unique view of the world, ego, pride, marketing, and odd incentives are scrambled together. In The Psychology of Money, award-winning author Morgan Housel shares 19 short stories exploring the strange ways people think about money.

Didn’t garner many helpful insights. For free, I would say to read fwiiw. To buy- not worthwhile, but that’s simply me. Maybe a young person in their 20’s or 30’s would find his writing more appealing and helpful.

Historia
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

Wonder how much of the story is factual vs fantasy, as the credibility of the author has diminished logarithmically.

Being an avid gardener, I had high hopes for this book. Alas—- it was so tedious and boring, I couldn’t finish it. I may try to use it as a sleep aid. I enjoy history, but this didn’t resonate with me.

A frightening assessment, with insightful improvement proposals
Revisado: 08-05-23
The author’s analysis of the health care industry was spot on in my opinion / experience. I am encouraged by the evidence based approach and strategies for improvement. Particularly for dealing with mutant market practices driven and protected by special interests instead of patient care quality and cost of service.

I read this in the early 2000s when it was initially released. After re-reading it now, what strikes me is how relevant it remains, and how well tight the author summarizes his points. Also it seems to have more and better supporting science, such as Thinking Fast and Slow.
