Historia
There’s chaos in Hollywood at the end of the New Year’s Eve countdown. Working her graveyard shift, LAPD detective Renée Ballard waits out the traditional rain of lead as hundreds of revelers shoot their guns into the air. Only minutes after midnight, Ballard is called to a scene where a hardworking auto shop owner has been fatally hit by a bullet in the middle of a crowded street party.

The gentle arts
Revisado: 11-26-22
A lovely story, of gentle times and experiences, a soft vision of a slower pace of life and bucolic settings. Beautifully narrated, as well as written, in a soft, comforting and sweet voice. A gentle vision of countrysides and lives protected. I have already listened to this many times and will enjoy it time and again. Thank you for a precious glimpse into a peaceful time.

A year has passed since LAPD detective Renée Ballard quit the force in the face of misogyny, demoralization, and endless red tape. But after the chief of police himself tells her she can write her own ticket within the department, Ballard takes back her badge, leaving “the Late Show” to rebuild and lead the cold case unit at the elite Robbery-Homicide Division.

Another win from CJ BOX! Thank you for the series...characters, setting, quotations and knowledge of wilderness lore. Enjoyed every minute and will listen again and again. Please keep writing...you are one of the best! So glad a friend recommended CJ Box to me. How did I miss such an engaging writer? A good, old fashioned storyteller.

Disappointed
Revisado: 04-17-17
In my humble opinion, Chip and Joanna are an entertaining couple, and I enjoy their tv series, which I stream only, so I am always behind in their current work. However, this book was disappointing in its lack of depth and originality. It is too short--it could be broken into a quarterly magazine version and be more effective. Signs of growing their business too fast and furious, perhaps. I wish them the best in their endeavors and development of their faith and raising their family, farm and Silo businesses. They obviously work hard and have lofty goals. Perhaps now is not the time to look for a complete documentation of their work and its impact on the city of Waco. Keep up the good work. Kids are great--it's fun to see them growing up. Lovely people and nice work. What's next? Too much, too fast.
Maybe a biography later would be more effective????
I subscribed to their magazine and find the same superficial approach. It looks good, though, and has some well-intended presentations. Everything seems too short and bland, not alive as they are in person or on tv. Just a bit shallow for those of us who want more meaning and depth.

Historia
A seemingly straightforward private case turns out to be much more complicated - and sinister - than Special Agent A. X. L. Pendergast ever could have anticipated. Pendergast, together with his ward, Constance Greene, travels to the quaint seaside village of Exmouth, Massachusetts, to investigate the theft of a priceless wine collection. But inside the wine cellar, they find something considerably more disturbing: a bricked-up niche that once held a crumbling skeleton.

Stands up to all Pendergast! Thank you!
Revisado: 11-26-15
This book was a hard-driven story, which kept me on the edge and listening non-stop. I listened to it three times. It was a bit different than some of the others, and full of the usual biting details and interesting data that the authors are so good at providing. The history and locale were a great setting for the actions of the characters, and the development of Constance Greene as a character and personality were much appreciated. She is so special and has so much potential! Is there a teaser here that the authors are presenting for future works? If so, it worked! Read it; great narration again by Mr. Auberjonois, who to me is the voice of Pendergast. He does an awesome job on the narration.

Classic Elizabeth George
Revisado: 11-26-15
I've listened to this book twice, and it's long and complicated anyway. I would like to see Barbara Havers developed more as a character as she was in this book; and Lynley also seemed to take a backseat in this story. The other cast of characters and their dysfunctional relationships were often unsurprising, though the story did have the usual unexpected twists we enjoy and come to expect from Ms. George. I liked it; I wish she would write more prolifigately. The narrator could have been improved upon; for the audio version, this was a weakness. However, there were quite a few characters and 21 hours, which must have been daunting. Love Elizabeth George; I am always watching for her new books. Love Lynley & Havers. Love the long books like this one and longer.

Likable story of the times
Revisado: 09-27-15
What did you love best about Tapestry?
The main character is sweet and believable.
What about Nicola Barber’s performance did you like?
I like Ms. Barber as a narrator. Her voice for books of this time period and female main characters seems appropriate--of course, we've never heard how they actually spoke. She has a great accent that can transport you to the time and place. Her voice as the King was interesting and showed a different side of his personality. What I mean is that Ms. Barber's voice for the King gave him a "new look" so to speak.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I have to agree with one of the other reviewers that the constant reference of "King Henry, the Eighth" was annoying and unnecessary.
Any additional comments?
Not one of my very favorite books of the period, though it was quite enjoyable. I'm glad I purchased it and will probably purchase the other two by the author. I'm particularly fascinated with tapestries; so, that is a plus. Quite a bit of fiction here, not as much historical, but enjoyable nevertheless. More detail and complexity would have made for a better story, but then I like very long, complex books.

Historia
Seth Hubbard is a wealthy man dying of lung cancer. He trusts no one. Before he hangs himself from a sycamore tree, Hubbard leaves a new, handwritten, will. It is an act that drags his adult children, his Black maid, and Jake into a conflict as riveting and dramatic as the murder trial that made Brigance one of Ford County's most notorious citizens, just three years earlier. The second will raises far more questions than it answers. Why would Hubbard leave nearly all of his fortune to his maid? Had chemotherapy and painkillers affected his ability to think clearly?

I liked this story very much; listened to it twice. Great storyline and character development and Southern culture. I wish the narrator had been able to do a better job keeping the story alive, though. I don't know about his accent, as I am not from the South but do love to hear that southern drawl.
