Historia
In Longshot, investigative journalist David Heath takes listeners inside the small group of scientists whose groundbreaking work was once largely dismissed but whose feat will now eclipse the importance of Jonas Salk’s polio vaccine in medical history. With never-before-reported details, Heath reveals how these scientists overcame countless obstacles to give the world an unprecedented head start when we needed a COVID-19 vaccine.

Great story
Revisado: 02-12-22
Despite being in the pandemic for almost 2 years, there is much that I didn’t know about the history of the development of the vaccines. This is a great overview of the history of the development of the covid vaccines.

Historia
In 1994, Peter Hotez's 19-month-old daughter, Rachel, was diagnosed with autism. Dr. Hotez, a pediatrician-scientist who develops vaccines for neglected tropical diseases affecting the world's poorest people, became troubled by the decades-long rise of the influential anti-vaccine community and their inescapable narrative around childhood vaccines and autism. Hotez draws on his experiences as a pediatrician, vaccine scientist, and father of an autistic child to outline the arguments on both sides of the debate.

Good entry level discussion
Revisado: 04-25-21
I had different expectations for this book and found it to be geared towards the lay person. Highly recommend for those without a background in science or medicine. If you have a background in science or medicine, you might find that the discussion is too superficial.

It was okay, but I was expecting it to be more like “This is Going to Hurt” and less like a podcast. If I had to redo it, I probably wouldn’t use one of my credits on it.

Historia
The emergence of strange new diseases is a frightening problem that seems to be getting worse. In this age of speedy travel, it threatens a worldwide pandemic. We hear news reports of Ebola, SARS, AIDS, and something called Hendra killing horses and people in Australia - but those reports miss the big truth that such phenomena are part of a single pattern. The bugs that transmit these diseases share one thing: they originate in wild animals and pass to humans by a process called spillover. David Quammen tracks this subject around the world.

I’ve never heard such an awkward performance. The pronunciations of certain words (mostly scientific terms) are annoyingly incorrect and it will awkwardly sound like a computer interjects with certain names like WHO or scientific names of animals/insects. The story is otherwise fascinating especially during Covid.

Historia
Three out of four people addicted to heroin probably started on a prescription opioid, according to the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In the United States alone, 16,000 people die each year as a result of prescription opioid overdose. But perhaps the most frightening aspect of the prescription drug epidemic is that it's built on well-meaning doctors treating patients with real problems.

As a medical student, I found the information in this book a very helpful explanation of what I have seen in the hospital.
