Ursula has definitely read Philip K. Dick before
Revisado: 06-20-21
Those familiar with her work may find this story a bit different as it doesn’t take place in the Hainish cycle or Earthsea but is more a kaleidoscopic dreamscape analogue to our own world. If you enjoy Le Guins sublime empyrean musings and you also like Phillip K. Dicks frenetic somewhat tenebrous style this book will hit just right. Open for interpretation.

Historia
Nanashi was born into a life of violence. Delivered from the mean streets by the Heron Clan, he mastered the way of the gun and knife and swiftly ascended through yakuza ranks to become a dreaded enforcer. His latest task? He and an entourage of expert killers are commanded to kidnap Muzaki, a retired world-renowned wrestler under protection of the rival Dragon Syndicate. It should be business as bloody usual for Nanashi and his ruthless brothers-in-arms.

I’m satisfied; cool themes in a quick horror romp
Revisado: 06-03-21
It’s a good short story, somewhere between Quintin Tarantino and H.P. Lovecraft. Laird’s writing in an even more highly visual way then usual on this one. Listening to it on tape is almost a cinematic experience if you have a quick imagination.

The title story of this collection - a devilishly ironic riff on H. P. Lovecraft's "Pickman's Model" - was nominated for a World Fantasy Award, while "Probiscus" was nominated for an International Horror Guild award and reprinted in The Year's Best Fantasy and Horror 19. In addition to his previously published work, this collection contains an original story.

Will certainly be reading more Laird Barron
Revisado: 09-03-20
The author combines prose that is eloquent, morose, and often viscerally uncanny with themes that I consistently find intriguing.
The writing can be somewhat difficult to follow on audiobook for one reason. I will use a quote from his writing to describe it; he writes “as if in a dream or nightmare wherein the sequence of events conforms to the needs of the story” this lends itself to the short stories very well.
He is able to establish protagonists whose various forms of hoisted professionalism serve not only to contrast the oddities they encounter but also as a window for which the reader can throw out their doubts and follow along

Listening on 1.25x makes this much better
Revisado: 10-08-19
Many reviewers seems to have an issue with the slogging pace of the narration and the fact that he doesn’t seem to differentiate character voices. After listening for a little under an hour I switched to 1.25x speed and was surprised to find that the pacing is much more natural and doesn’t really have a ‘speed-up’ quality. It also tends to create a very subtle differentiation between the two characters voices.
