Historia
When Lyn Slater started her fashion blog, Accidental Icon, at age sixty-one, she discovered that followers were flocking to her account for more than just her A-list style. As Lyn flaunted gray hair, wrinkles, and a megadose of self-acceptance, they found in her an alternative model of older life: someone who defied the stereotypes, refused to become invisible, and showed that all women have the opportunity to be relevant and take major risks at any stage of their life. Youth is not the only time we can be experimental. How to Be Old tells the ten-year story of Lyn’s sixties.

More memoir, less how to
Revisado: 03-21-24
Narration is better at 1.5 speed. There is a lot of “look at me aren’t I amazing” stuff in here. And yes, she is! She is a fabulous woman leading a fabulous storybook life. But her story also sent me on a self reflection journey, particularly the sections about her mother and grandmother. For this I am grateful to have listened.

Historia
In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store.

Thoroughly engrossing story woven throughout with characters so well drawn I would recognize them passing me on the street. Excellent narration! I cried at the ending. Funny, heartbreaking, and wise.

Historia
Many famed music producers are known for a particular sound that has its day. Rick Rubin is known for something else: creating a space where artists of all different genres and traditions can home in on who they really are and what they really offer. He has made a practice of helping people transcend their self-imposed expectations in order to reconnect with a state of innocence from which the surprising becomes inevitable. Over the years, he has learned that being an artist isn’t about your specific output, it’s about your relationship to the world.

“Comparison is the thief of joy. “
Revisado: 04-02-23
That quote pulled me out of a dark place and explained a painting I had been struggling with for months. After listening once, I listened again. So much good advice is packed into these few hours. It was the kick in the pants I needed to get out of my head.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

It’s a Lifetime movie waiting to be optioned. Completely predictable. This was our book club selection after reading so many positive comments. We gave it a generous 3 stars.

Historia
In the lawless, drought-ridden lands of the Arizona Territory in 1893, two extraordinary lives unfold. Nora is an unflinching frontierswoman awaiting the return of the men in her life - her husband, who has gone in search of water for the parched household, and her elder sons, who have vanished after an explosive argument. Nora is biding her time with her youngest son, who is convinced that a mysterious beast is stalking the land around their home.

A hard listen. Better to read this one.
Revisado: 09-28-19
I finished Inland a couple of weeks ago. I wasn't sure how I felt about it then, but the story has stayed with me, and confounded me somewhat. I will leave it to folks smarter than I to figure out what I missed.
The main problem with listening to Inland is the narration by the actor narrating Lurie. The voice is soft and dreamy, appropriate for a character speaking of memories, but difficult to hear while riding in a car even with the sound at full volume. The words on the page would have had more impact, as Lurie's life was full of sadness and desperation.
The story takes place with Nora, as she explains her life through her thoughts, on how she came to be in Arizona, needing water desperately, on this particular day in 1893. Lurie's life is also told in retrospect, ending on that very same day in Arizona when the two stories finally come together.
The characters are richly drawn. The story is beautifully written. The camel is fun. Wish I had read it instead.

Historia
The year 1904. On the banks of the Zambezi River, a few miles from the majestic Victoria Falls, there is a colonial settlement called The Old Drift. In a smoky room at the hotel across the river, an Old Drifter named Percy M. Clark, foggy with fever, makes a mistake that entangles the fates of an Italian hotelier and an African busboy. This sets off a cycle of unwitting retribution between three Zambian families (black, white, brown) as they collide and converge over the course of the century, into the present and beyond.

A saga of Africa and African immigrants
Revisado: 08-02-19
I really enjoyed 85% of this book. Divided into three sections, the story spans about one hundred years or so, using fantasy and magical realism swirled into to historical events. When the plot moved into the realm of science fiction, it lost me for a bit. but the author manages a satisfying ending. One note... I recommend getting a hard copy of the book, or the kindle edition, in addition to the audible version. You will definitely want to keep referring to the family tree diagram at the front. Otherwise it's very hard to keep the characters straight. Books On Our Brains Society read this as our monthly selection and all felt the family tree diagram was essential.

Historia
When Condé Nast offered Ruth Reichl the top position at America’s oldest epicurean magazine, she declined. She was a writer, not a manager, and had no inclination to be anyone’s boss. Yet Reichl had been reading Gourmet since she was eight; it had inspired her career. How could she say no? This is the story of a former Berkeley hippie entering the corporate world and worrying about losing her soul. It is the story of the moment restaurants became an important part of popular culture, a time when the rise of the farm-to-table movement changed, forever, the way we eat.

Save Me the Plums is a thoroughly enjoyable romp through the world of Conde Nast's Gourmet, and it's demise, as written and narrated by its former editor Ruth Reichl. You don't have to be a cook or a foodie to savor this memoir. Just let Ruth tell you her story. Delicious!
