Historia
Cleo Jaffray was an American. A war in Europe had nothing to do with her. She told herself that right up until the man she loved went missing in Poland and Cleo was forced to turn to the only person who might be able to help—her aunt Daisy, the US Minister to Norway. Daisy Harriman has never shied away from a challenge, be it canvassing for women’s suffrage or driving Red Cross ambulances in WWI, so as only the second woman ambassador, she is determined to prove the naysayers wrong and succeed in her post.

Good picture of history
Revisado: 03-14-25
I enjoyed the combination of history and Ms Rickloff’s weaving of characters into facts to create an active visual picture of events of that period. I recently saw the documentary of Narvik which also enhanced my awareness of the WWII struggle for Norway. Good book and would recommend it.

I enjoyed the presentation, but felt as though there was too much detail. Of course, listening to how much history Doris Kearns Goodwin when had to sort through and write, it was an amazing condensation.

It was a wonderful book to listen to, but a bit challenging learning all the characters. The epilogue was as good. It certainly explained the history and facts behind the story and characters. I didn’t realize so much of it was true, not just a novel to read. I learned a lot.

Georgeanna “Georgey” Woolsey isn’t meant for the world of lavish parties and the demure attitudes of women of her stature. So when war ignites the nation, Georgey follows her passion for nursing during a time when doctors considered women on the battlefront a bother. In proving them wrong, she and her sister Eliza venture from New York to Washington, DC, to Gettysburg and witness the unparalleled horrors of slavery as they become involved in the war effort.

Revisado: 08-14-24
The reader lived the lives of a couple of families before and during the Civil War from comfortable white and the misery of black slaves drawn from letters found from that period. It was a wonderful historical story. I want to read all her books. The narrators had wonderful accents.
