Definitively the greatest audiobook I ever listened to for free on here. Even without that winning price, I would still rate it highly, but the amount of production put into this makes the lack of profit a bit mind boggling. The author performs the work and does a bang-up job. Having the entire book also fully produced with sound effects, music, atmospherics, and a litany of amusing voices only adds to the fun. On top of all that, the protagonist is the perfect anti-hero: witty, self-destructive, and capable in equal measures. If you enjoy humorous Sci-Fi or simply want to find another listen before your next Audible credit, this one's for you! I listened to it over the course of a single day.

What I like about this book is its main character: Vince, a former paralegal for the Air Force who ended up doing a tour in Afghanistan, now retired and working as a paralegal at a law firm. After so many books about former special forces operators or Army rangers, it was a pleasant surprise to instead follow someone a bit more… ordinary. Almost unremarkable. Not that Vince isn’t likable, but he’s also far more relatable than, say, Jack Reacher.

Even so, with the help of a few friends, he is able to confront a demon from his past and see justice done for a wronged airman after so many years. Not by kicking down doors and taking names, but by combining his law and research experience with some classic detective work. Again, grounded. Believable. Proof you don’t have to be Jack Ryan to go above and beyond.

I’ve encountered some great narrators, but Jay Snyder has stuck out in my brain since I first listened to The Instructor. This book is another masterclass in narration, and the story is just as gritty and satisfying as Book 1.

If there's a better audiobook with my name on the cover, I haven't listened to it.

I listened to this novel over a year ago, and the ethereal moment at the finale + the ending line of that particular chapter have stuck with me to this day. And every time I think about it, I feel just a bit more at peace than I was before. And that's an achievement in its own right with how much else we have fighting for headspace. I can only hope someone might say the same about my own books.

Many of the questions I had after listening to Book 1 were answered and all sorts of new ones were posed, which, since this is a trilogy, are not all answered by the last page. I'm particularly interested to see what new powers appear in Book 3 after meeting some new and powerful folks in Anomalies and learning more about the mysterious government agency that appears to be at the heart of this fringe world the anomalies exist in.

This is a very different book than Echoes, but in the best way possible. The plot throws the characters we already met into new and dangerous situations while also introducing a whole cast of other interesting folks. Along the way, we learn more about Laura, her relationships, and even a bit more about her powers. If you liked Echoes, you'll enjoy Anomalies.

I will be up front in saying that I have a personal connection to the author, which you may rightly read as biasing me to leave a good review. HOWEVER, I am not someone who seeks out young adult (YA) fiction, and I certainly do not enjoy recalling high school (hence I quoted "glory days" in the title). I am also a writer, so my lens for critiquing a book is perhaps more focused and discerning than the average person. I like to think this push and pull helped me keep an objective outlook while listening.

Despite the fact that I do not make a habit of reading young adult fiction, I found myself gripped by the central mystery and the relationship it's connected to. That need to know what happens propelled me forward.

The supernatural element to this story was a definite plus since I also write speculative fiction and enjoy exploring the unknown. I am also envious of the scenes around the protagonist Laura's relationship and the romance elements throughout. As I discussed with a fellow writer, capturing the nuances of attraction and intimacy is more challenging than many people realize, and to me these parts of the book felt the most real of all, so that is quite an achievement.

Relying on tension building through a unique setting and unsettling descriptions vs. cheap scares or gore, this book is a masterclass in how to create an immersive story, all while demonstrating true technical prowess by showing the events out of chronological order. This approach heightens the unease, as we (the audience) often end up knowing information that the protagonist has either forgotten or has yet to learn. A very enjoyable story from an up and coming author that is perfectly complemented by the narrator.

I have laughed so many times listening to this book that it has to be a record for me. The narrator and author created something truly special here between the Mad Max parody world to the absurdly named characters ("Kid Stretcher Kyle", "Meat Machine") to the aliens and their culture, with special honors to the Enemy and their 27 different words for "stabbing."

I recently listened to this book again for some inspiration for my own humor writing, and it was just as much fun the second time around.
