Koritt is an alien tasked with kidnapping a human for his superiors. Lavender is a special ops commando who is used to getting the job done, no matter what. Lincoln Frost is trained to manipulate and bully anyone she needs to in order to recover alien tech for the shady company she works for, SEED. What none of them know is that Koritt’s planet has decided that humans are an illegal experiment that must be destroyed to cover their tracks.

Koritt’s ship promptly crashes and Lavender quickly swoops in to scavenge the broken vessel. They find some interesting artifacts while Koritt observes. Then Frost is on the scene, expecting to be obeyed. She didn’t count on Lavender’s total disregard for orders or his resourcefulness...or how quickly he would learn to use the U-10. Add in some locals who keep trying to obliterate everyone and things become interesting really quickly.

I enjoyed this listen more than I expected to. It had interesting characters that I liked and cared about. The story was interesting and I had a vested interest in earth staying intact. I also took an instant dislike to the owner and head of SEED and kept hoping that he would get his hat handed to him. In the end, this was a well thought out story which light in the right places and serious in the right places. The narration was well done and enjoyable to listen to. John Pirhalla gives a nuanced performance where it is easy to tell who is speaking at any time and his voice can be deep and gravelly or high and nasal.

When Dr. Diane Buckley is called to evaluate a man she helped to put away for horrendous murders, she does not expect to hear of more murders happening with his MO. Alfred Dinklage won’t give any indormation as to the killer that is seeming to continue the work Dinklage started so many years ago. At the same time, Buckley is having to deal with her own teenagers and especially her daughter who is showing signs of being a psychopath herself. To top it all off, the detective assigned to the case is an old love interest that Buckley has thoroughly pushed away. Can she read the signs and clues left behind in time to stop the killer? Can she save her relationship with her son and daughter?

I want to buy this story and read it because it seemed so good. Unfortunately, the narration, acting and special effects didn’t work in this one and were very distracting. The voices all run on top of each other so you don’t know who is speaking at critical moments and the sound effects overpower the voices. It just didn’t work for me and really made me not enjoy the book as much, especially the surprise ending which is actually very good.

Danny Corwin appears to be the boy next door. Except this boy has some dark fantasies to fulfill and doesn't care who he hurts in order to do whatever he wants. The only problem is that no one wants to believe it could be him. The first time he does whatever he wants, he gets caught and sent to prison. The problem is he sucks everyone in, is the perfect prisoner and gets out early. He even starts dating an old neighbor friend.

Once Danny is out of prison, it gets worse. He starts killing women. All the while dating his girlfriend, getting engaged and pretending to go to college. This was an interesting read. I just wish it were longer.

The narrator, I believe, was going for an old newsreel type read over being really feeling about his material. He was OK and didn't distract from the listen for me.

I’m not gonna lie, I didn’t enjoy this listen. I’m all for erotica and am definitely not a prude. However, I do require my books to make sense. Unfortunately, this one fell short for me. In short, A woman has a bad experience in bed with a new lover and just can’t seem to find someone who will fulfill her so she makes up a lover and slowly and irrevocably goes into a spiral. She spends all of her time with this dream lover and can’t seem to be bothered with the real world anymore.

Audrey Lusk’s narration was a detraction for me, too. She read the material in what came off as a sarcastic manner to me and I found it irritating rather than endearing. The material is about a woman slowly going crazy and becoming a recluse and she sounded like she was telling us a juicy story that we are going to find hilarious. It didn’t work for me.

From a horrible childhood tragedy and the resulting guilt, a young woman has suffered several setbacks in her quest to make it right. Sadie is forced to reconcile that tragedy as she returns to Emerald Point, Missouri to investigate a suspicious fire. This is where she grew up. She knows these people. These people love her. But after learning the truth, Sadie can’t stand to be there.

Quinn is the new police chief who lost his wife and decided to make a change and try small town life. He falls in love with Sadie at first sight but can’t reconcile her sweet nature and solidly religious family with her refusal of all things God. Can he help Sadie return to God so they can be together?

This book is more than a little sappy but I enjoyed it all the same. Sadie is a truly good person and Quinn is just about a saint. Sadie’s family is funny, too, so it is a good mix of humor and the serious subjects of religion and survivor’s guilt. Worth a read if you are searching for some positive vibes or just a feel good story. There is good character development and a depth that has merit.

In addition, the narration by Leonor Woodworth is well done. She manages to do a lot of voices in a unique and separate way so you never get lost on who is speaking and she really brought Sadie to life. I listened on 1.5 speed.

...and interesting. Kieran Kelley’s wife is given an epidural during labor that leaves her paralyzed and in excrutiating pain. So much pain that she takes her own life. Kieran is absolutely devastated. He immediately vows revenge and begins plotting. Kelley is good at this type of thing, too, because he’s an ex-Irish extremist during the ‘troubles’.

His plans are sent slightly off track when he meets the Countess Magda. A sufferer like his beloved wife. He finds himself genuinely in love with Magda and it makes him rethink his plan.

On the other side of the equation is the young doctor Jonathon Tring who is caught up in the plot after accepting a research position at the company that makes the drug given to Kelley’s wife. He writes a response to the uproar around the drug and ends up as #1 on Kelley’s hit list.

This was a really well written book and the emotions are laid out in a believable, yet compassionate way. I like the bits of Irish history and the geniune person that we get from Kieran. The ending is inevitable but not overdone and the characters stayed with me long after I finished listening to it. Which I did on 1.5 speed.

This prequel is revealing in many ways. It delves into tower politics, world affairs when the dragon was reborn and into the history of the wheel of time. It was nice to see Moraine at a time when she didn’t know everything and to get a sense of the passion and the commitment she has to Rand. It was nice to see her natural distrust of Cadsuane.

This is Moraine as an accepted and through her testing to become full Aes Sedai. This is Moraine desparate to escape being crowned queen of Carhien. This is Moraine on a quest that will consume her life.

There is also Lan. Strong soldier trying desparately to avoid being crowned king of a dead land against his will. He especially does not want what his mentor, his...cameira, his first love, has in store for him.

Together they will shape the events in the Wheel of Time. But first they have to overcome a very strong initial dislike and distrust of each other. To escape what the world wants of each, they will cleave to each other and change their future.

I wish they would write an ending novel to Wheel of Time that would be so satisfying and wrap up all the loose ends that made an entire fringe of forgotten paths at the end of A Memory of Light.

The narration here was particularly good and I didn’t want the story to end. I did listen on 1.5 speed.

Caemlyn falls, M’Hael rises, Moraine returns, Mat leads, the dragons blast, the great generals fail, little Olver becomes a hero, Lan slays a Forsaken, and everyone fights. Egwene is still stupid where Rand is concerned. The Aiel are saved and the war rages.

This is a good ending to the war but is overly short on truly wrapping up the series and giving a sense of closure to favorites. There is very little sense of what comes next. In short, it was a satisfying end to the conflict that decides the fate of the pattern but very, very unsatisfying in terms of where did everyone end up?

It Begins

The pattern is unraveling and trollocs are invading out of the blight. Rand is trying to consolidate nations and force a treaty that will stand after he’s gone. Aviendha must help him to not condemn the Aiel and to bring them into the lands of the west. He then entrusts her with a massive responsibility while he fights The Dark One.

First, this is where I begin to despise Morgase Trakand. She has always been petulant after her fall and even downright foolish but the whole idea of her losing her common sense when given a bit of responsibility back when it comes to Perrin is spiteful and beneath even a fallen monarch. And after it was so obvious he was trying to avoid a fight with Galad. Perrin is feeling pinched after a dreamspike makes it impossible for Perrin’s asha’man to make gateways. He takes to the dream world to find the object and hops it all the way to Tar Valon where he gives Egwene a satisfactory lesson in Tel’aran’rhiod.

Meanwhile Rand surprises and impresses Egwene with a visit to White Tower although she is still too dumb to realize he’s not the farmboy she knew and loved. She works against him even as he anticipates her and uses her ignorance to his advantage. Then she doubles down on her stupidity by not bonding Gawyn and almost gets them both killed by assassins. The one thing she does right is breaking Masaana’s mind who is trapped in the White Tower because of the dreamspike. Meanwhile, Perrin appears to be pursuing Galad’s army but is really going to save them from a trolloc army because it’s the right thing to do. Child Byar tries to kill Perrin after this but is instead killed by his own friend Bornhald who understands Perrin did not kill his father.

Mat finally gets free of the gholam and he is finally able to meet with Elayne in order to provide her with Aludra’s dragons. He also give his foxhead medallion to Elayne to study that has disastrous effects. And finally, he sets out with Thom and Noal to rescue Moiraine. In order to save her, he will have to give up half the light of the world and, boy, is it a price. But he does it because Mat is a real hero at heart whether he wants to be or not.

Again, I listened on 1.25 speed to the impeccable narration by Michael Kramer and Kate Reading.

Finally...The Dragon is Reborn

Rand finally comes to terms with being the Dragon Reborn, but only after, and because of, doing such horrendous, callous things. It almost defeats him utterly. Cadsuane may try to take credit for Rand’s epiphany, but no, it is Rand alone and he saves himself. Rand faces down two of the forsaken in this book and the diminutive Tuon, though he can’t force the tiny but strong woman to bend to his will.

Egwene continues in her captivity, staying true to her stance of being the true Amyrlin. Her stubbornness alone wins some supporters. Right before the imminent Seanchan attack, Verin appears to Egwene and tells her much she did not know. But it is an outside attack on the White Tower itself that shows all that Egwene is the one and only Amyrlin Seat. She faces down the most horrible of adversaries and saves many lesser Aes Sedai.

This is a fascinating book and kept me listening at times where I don’t normally listen. I even gained a grudging respect for Egwene who I normally cannot stand. That is, until she is petulant upon her rescue.

Still listening on 1.25 speed to superb narration.
