Historia
For years, guitarist Quinn Porter has been on the road, chasing gig after gig, largely absent to his twice-ex-wife Belle and their odd, Guinness records-obsessed son. When the boy dies suddenly, Quinn seeks forgiveness for his paternal shortcomings by completing the requirements for one of his son's unfinished Boy Scout badges. For seven Saturdays Quinn does yard work for Ona Vitkus, the spry 104-year-old Lithuanian immigrant the boy had visited weekly.

Historia
People say Beartown is finished. A tiny community nestled deep in the forest, it is slowly losing ground to the ever encroaching trees. But down by the lake stands an old ice rink, built generations ago by the working men who founded this town. And in that ice rink is the reason people in Beartown believe tomorrow will be better than today. Their junior ice hockey team is about to compete in the national semifinals, and they actually have a shot at winning.

Five Stars, All around!
Revisado: 08-10-17
Bear town came to me via a recommendation from a Library patron . I had thoroughly enjoyed my read of A Man Called Ove, but even so went on to other choices that compelled me/I had planned to read. However, I appreciate the encouragement to turn-around. Hockey itself held little interest for me, yet Hockey and the isolation of the rural location called Bear town, as well as its residents pulled me in - and, once again the story line the issues presented and the development of the characters kept winding me back in. The story clearly doesn't take place in the U S, Except for the currency mentioned and hints underscored toward the book's end, I feel still uncertain we are in Scandinavia/am unsure where the story takes place - the implication being that kids, families and communities have common characteristics and problems that arise almost anywhere on earth. The story does resolve, but questions are not necess a rily all answered. Might make a good book for an entire high school or English, class - to read and discuss. I really enjoy Backman's character development and style .

Historia
The occasion was a big birthday. And it inspired two close friends to get together in Dharamsala for a talk about something very important to them. The friends were His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. The subject was joy. Both winners of the Nobel Prize, both great spiritual masters and moral leaders of our time, they are also known for being among the most infectiously happy people on the planet.

Historia
Acclaimed scientist Hope Jahren has built three laboratories in which she's studied trees, flowers, seeds, and soil. Her first book might have been a revelatory treatise on plant life. Lab Girl is that, but it is also so much more. Because in it, Jahren also shares with us her inspiring life story, in prose that takes your breath away.

An important read....
Revisado: 03-05-17
I am in the choir regarding the subject - conservation and activism to protect our plant world, however Hope Jahren is the "real deal" as a plant scientist, researcher, educator and writer. I had some difficulty with her path, the unusual relationship with Bill, and the development of the story line.. At the same time, it was a wortwhile use of time, her writing style is articulate and expressive, and I am grateful for what I learned

Wrenching story
Revisado: 03-19-16
Despite the fact I feel this book is well-conceived and an excellent story, A Little Life is a very long read. I think it would have benefitted from more attentive editing. The readers performance in the audio version - excellent - makes the book even more believable. However, such a powerful story was almost too difficult for me to finish. I was thankful the last chapter helped mediate its difficult ending.

Historia
Meet Ove. He's a curmudgeon - the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him "the bitter neighbor from hell". But behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness.

A Man Called Ove was recommended to me ...
Revisado: 12-08-15
Chapter 1, and what seemed to be a slow start , left me wondering if I might decide not to continue. However, the development of each of Ove's habits and opinions, each newly introduced character , slowly started to intrigue me. Ffashbacks to Ove's life history built to a point where I couldn't put the book down. Its humor, excellent writing and warming story, and life lessons are unforgettable. I highly recommend it.

Why?
Revisado: 05-14-15
Still trying to discern - beyond describing awesome sex- why this book overuses words such as"frisson" and requires 3 volumes to reveal its story. I will see the film - as the director's bio is quite compelling itself - and it is now in distribution on Roku and Netflix. However, for awhile, have been looking forward to my next read/another good book....
