Different take on the serial killer novella

This riveting story changes perspectives between a serial killer who locks women in cages, his family, and two young women trying to catch him. It builds a steady sense of menace, with some good twists along with way and even some laughs. All the characters are different and believable. Reluzco's narration is top, with different voices and pace to match the action. A great short read!

set the terms of fighting for the rest of the war

This is a detailed description of one of the key battles of the early Pacific War, the Battle of Tenaru River on Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands. It draws on documents and interviews but is richer on the American side than the Japanese, especially in the preliminary sections on forming the units, training etc. Bartsch is an experienced historian of this period who handles his material well, creating a vivid sense of the difficulties of limited training, no water, and fierce combat. The main description of the battle is followed by a good tactical analysis, which supports his main argument that the Japanese command lacked good intelligence, failed to direct the mission and was based on a mentality about fighting that was hugely wasteful of men's lives. It is a shame the maps of the print edition are not available as they would help understand the advance to the river and the positions of each side. Nevitt's narration is excellent. If you have enjoyed the memoir's of Marine's like Slade or Leckie, 'Victory Fever on Guadalcanal' is worth looking into.

Native American Themed Horror

The Equinox is an engrossing novel that jumps between the perspectives of Blackbird, a Native American exiled from his tribe so he can confronting an ancient evil, and small-town Chief of Police, Logan, who investigates a series of child-murders. This allows for a mix of mythology and police investigation, told in really distinct scenes with a good sense of place and personality and build-up to the final confrontation with evil. The story might remind you of some of the 1980s-1990s horror novels which played with Native American monsters and vengeful shamans, but don't be put off, Preston is not derivative. Cluthe's deep voice works well for Logan and I'm glad he didn't do a stereotypical Native American accent for Blackbird's chapters. There did seem to be a bad edit around 8 hrs 48 mins. Overall, a big recommend for a Halloween read.

This novel of a coordinated attack on a nuclear power-plant is told form different perspectives: security guards and terrorist/mercenary adversaries. Anyone who has worked a monotonous job will connect with Taylor and his colleagues working the midnight shift and Scozzari does a solid job explaining different procedures which build anticipation of the siege. Also, he sets the plant within the landscape and history of California, which sets this thriller apart from the competition. Once the action heats up, weapons are well described although it does feel like the final act is a bit brief in contrast to the build-up. Harper's neutral narration is clear, although his voices for the foreigners did not match their description as from the Middle East. Overall, if you have an interest in military thrillers or nuclear power-plants, then this is a scarily realistic and engaging read.

This book is a fun romp through the mind and romantic difficulties of Tillman (genetics professor with ASD). Along the way he learns to make cocktails, be flexible and find love. It is heartwarming, laugh out loud fun in a similar vein to Nick Earls or 'Big Bang Theory'. Definitely worth the credit.

These three novellas are a good value purchase if you like cozy mysteries without swearing, gore, sex or cliffhangers. Set in a small town in Georgia, they have a strong sense of place. Allie is a likable main character whose struggles with finances, romance, friendships and work provide context for the murders which she stumbles on and quickly solves. The stories themselves are interspersed with descriptions of yummy sounding recipes. Clark's neutral US-accent is sometimes a bit flat.

I chose 'Reasons of Evil' for the cover (which actually depicts a scene from the book) and was pleased to discover how much it does in only three hours. It begins with the story of conquering hero battle mage Grimmere but, when he is offered a chance to change history, feels more like a LitRPG, before moving to a climactic battle sequence, a philosophical reflection on the nature of evil and a change of character PoV for a final boss-fight. At times it is dark and gory and you definitely want to find out what happens in the end. Richard's British-accented reading is easy to listen to and fits the atmosphere. There did seem to be two bad edits at around 2 hours 28 mins in.

Solid Military Fantasy Novella

This is a solid military fantasy novella about Yaro the commander of an elite unit of bear cavalry (!) sent on a seemingly simple mission to end a rebellion. Lüthi's eastern European themed world is well-developed and hints at deep lore. The story is well-paced with the battle scenes being a highlight for me. Miller's British-accented narration was perfect and chapters are divided with some suitably ominous music. I hope there will be more in this series.

Journalist Connors finds renewal of spirit working in the pine forest of the American South West as a fire lookout. This book is his thoughts on the experience. Although I'm sure it was carefully edited, it has a wonderful raw quality and covers different themes and topics with ease, including how to take a baring on a fire, the importance of beer in the back country and conservation ethics. The reading by Sean Runnette is sensitive and very suitable. Beware this book - it will make you want to quit your day job!
