Historia
From the sprawling barricadas of Lima to the garbage hills of Manila, urbanization has been disconnected from industrialization, even economic growth. Davis portrays a vast humanity warehoused in shantytowns and exiled from the formal world economy. He argues that the rise of this informal urban proletariat is a wholly original development unforeseen by either classical Marxism or neoliberal theory. Are the great slums, as a terrified Victorian middle class once imagined, volcanoes waiting to erupt?

fascinating, grim, digestible
Revisado: 03-18-25
Planet of Slums gives a very comprehensive examination of the causes, historical development and social "function" of slums in the 20th century and so-called "end of history" period (1991-2000s). The book is well written and very digestible for a lay audience. The audiobook is well produced and the narrator has a clear voice, though he is absolutely fighting for his life with pronunciation of any non-English words or foreign placenames (a minor, kind of funny detail that doesn't damage the overall quality of the audiobook).

Historia
In the depths of the Great War, with millions dead and no imaginable end to the conflict, societies around the world began to buckle. The heart of the financial system shifted from London to New York. The infinite demands for men and materiel reached into countries far from the front. The strain of the war ravaged all economic and political assumptions, bringing unheard-of changes in the social and industrial order.

Well read, good narrative, not intellectually interesting
Revisado: 03-09-25
The audiobook itself is high quality (narrator, audio quality). The book is a fairly good narrative account of the politics of the war and the role/rise of America. Overall though I found this a much stimulating book with a lower level of scholarship than The Wages of Destruction. Some parts are very bitterly written and kind of ideological. A few minor historical errors (though hard to say if these were fixable at the time the book was being written, or are dated because of more recent work). Whereas I could definitely see myself relistening to WoD, I can't say the same for this book.

The tales of The Silmarillion are set in an age when Morgoth, the first Dark Lord, dwelt in Middle-earth, and the High Elves made war upon him for the recovery of the Silmarils, the jewels containing the pure light of Valinor. Included on the recording are several shorter works. The Ainulindalë is a myth of the Creation and in the Valaquenta the nature and powers of each of the gods is described. The Akallabêth recounts the downfall of the great island kingdom of Númenor at the end of the Second Age, and Of the Rings of Power tells of the great events at the end of the Third Age.

audio quality issues
Revisado: 07-06-23
Andy Serkis does a great job. However the audio sounds kind of quavering, like it was compressed in a weird way. Didn't have these issues with LOTR.

Narrator is terrible
Revisado: 01-15-23
Roy Dotrice has been incredibly inconsistent throughout the whole series (changing voices, changing the way he pronounces names) but his new voices in this book are the most baffling so far. Why does Daenerys sound like an old woman now??? Shame on us for continuing to buy this version (so they have no reason to fix it). Its unacceptably bad.

Historia
In the best-selling tradition of The Swerve and A Distant Mirror, The Verge tells the story of a period that marked a decisive turning point for both European and world history. Here, author Patrick Wyman examines two complementary and contradictory sides of the same historical coin: the world-altering implications of the developments of printed mass media, extreme taxation, exploitative globalization, humanistic learning, gunpowder warfare, and mass religious conflict in the long term, and their intensely disruptive consequences in the short-term.

Interesting subject, not the best writer
Revisado: 01-08-23
The subject of the "great divergence" is super interesting, as is the whole of early modern European history as it's a period that lays down the foundations of the current world system. I was really excited for this book, especially because podcasts I enjoy recommended it and because Wyman is a very engaging person when talking conversationally about history.
However, he's frankly just not that great of a writer. The more it feels like he tries to lock down a story into a more formal structure, the more drawn out and repetitive he gets. He'll make the same point over and over again, and not in a way that's helpfully reinforcement or particularly elegant. I love history podcasts (History of Rome/Revolutions, Age of Napoleon, Dark Ages Pod, etc) but found Wyman's podcast a bit draining due to these flaws. Having an editor seems to have helped tremendously when writing this book, but its still a noticable issue that he should work on.
Also, I see what he's going for with the vignettes at the beginning of chapters and it's not a bad idea in itself. The execution is just not very good and it adds nothing to the more formal non-fiction content of the book, so I found them to be a bit of a slog.
Anyway, I'd still say the book is worth a listen. The interesting subject matter alone can compensate for some of the book's limitations. There aren't a ton of great audiobooks that tackle this time period, so Wyman has done a great service in putting this work out. I'd also encourage you to catch any Wyman appearance where he speaks off the cuff, because he is a very articulate, charismatic and enthusiastic history educator in that format.

Same problems as every other by this narrator
Revisado: 12-18-22
The narrator still can't decide how he wants to say names he's already said at least 1000 times. Gives the same character different accents between chapters (or even within one). Really careless reading.
The book is the least interesting/compelling of the series so far. You'd think the introduction of new POV characters would be refreshing like it was in book 2, but it's not. Jaime's backstory reveal is relatively interesting but Cersi comes across as one dimensional by comparison. Brienne's character concept is good, but her actual POV is terribly dull for the most part. Even more boring as are the randos like Areo, Arys, Aeron and Arianne. Along with Jaime's chapters, Arya, Samwell, Sansa and Asha largely carry the story.
Even for the good characters though, you have to look past the baffling/jarring inconsistencies in narration to see the upsides. Often a challenge...

None of the problems with books 1 or 2 fixed here
Revisado: 12-05-22
As with books 1 and 2, the narrator gets names wrong (often switching between different pronunciations between adjacent sentences), completely changes character's voices in different chapters, makes no attempt to give characters from the same place the same/similar accent and his choice of accent for Missandei is extremely weird, almost like a racist caricature of a chinese accent (think "flied lice").
As far as the story, it's pretty good, but definitely George R. R. Martin's horniest so far in the series.

Good book, mixed bag with narrator
Revisado: 11-16-22
The narrator overall has an ok voice, their pacing is good etc. But they don't even try with names. Not only are some of his pronunciations absolutely bizarre, but he'll pronounce the same name multiple different ways completely inconsistently, even within the same paragraph. Baffling. Also his choice of accents for different characters is totally incoherent, seemingly random.

Winter is coming. Such is the stern motto of House Stark, the northernmost of the fiefdoms that owe allegiance to King Robert Baratheon in far-off King's Landing. There Eddard Stark of Winterfell rules in Robert's name. Far to the north, behind the towering Wall, lie savage Wildings and worse - unnatural things relegated to myth during the centuries-long summer, but proving all too real and all too deadly in the turning of the season. Yet a more immediate threat lurks to the south, where Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, has died under mysterious circumstances....

Good book, not so great narrator
Revisado: 10-28-22
It's a good series. The narrator messes up a lot of names (often after having gotten them correct earlier which is odd). I mean he'll literally say "Joffrey" in one sentence and then literally in the next sentence call him "Jeffrey". The way he pronounces Little Fingers name is not even. Close. Also his choices of tone in line delivery is *insane*. The way he has Drogo say "no" sounds like Hans Moleman
Also the narrator's only way of doing different voices is varying how phlegmy they sound.
