surprisingly enjoyable
Revisado: 02-18-25
I enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would. it's not a sprawling world nor an immense magic system or such. it's a concise story about guilt, growth and redemption and it works well.

All the rage.
Revisado: 10-30-24
I'm halfway through this book and so far I'm a bit annoyed by 2 things.
1. The amount of hysterical anger and paranoia every single person in this story has. The only not perpetually simmering people so far were insect people and that, possibly, is only because they are supposed to have an alien mindset. But other than that everyone is shouting and mad about something all the time. I'd love for there to be more than 1 emotion in the characters. It's not that there are no other emotions in the story just that the anger is always so close to the surface waiting to erupt at the slightest provocation or divergence from their plans.
2. The vocabulary of the author is a bit incongruent with the vocabulary of Red and they are strongly mixed. At times this pulled me out of the story. Tributary being a big one. That's neither a 10yo nor a cave dweller word.
Except for these complaints the story and writing is good. I still enjoyed it.
might update after I finish it.

Kind of a sudden end of the series. didn't see it coming at all. And I was quite sad that there seemed quite a few loose ends. Or solutions to problems that weren't satisfying.

I’m never one to turn down a bet. Especially not when it comes to retaliating against the dean for pulling a dick move before summer break. So when the dean’s golden child arrives at Astor for his freshman year, my fellow troublemakers throw down a wager I can’t resist. The target: the dean’s son, John Thomas Hawthorne, or “JT”. The bet: corruption in any way I choose. It should’ve been easy. With his mess of brown curls, pouty lips, and good-boy reputation, JT is the perfect revenge. And even better? He’s straight.

The story was fun.
Revisado: 12-04-23
Voices were quite well done. The story is fun but it is very clear the men are written by women for women. Some of the moments were a bit weird because of it but that's very normal for these romance/sex stories. On average it was one of the better ones since I did finish this one where I generally get too frustrated to see them through. As said at the start I had fun.

not great
Revisado: 09-14-23
I want to love this series because I love basebuilding and system apocalypse. This book really wasn't that. the apocalypse has passed and the base building was barely there. There were some decent moments, fights and some good ideas. But what truly made me dislike this book is the juvenile horniness. If we leave out all the sexual comments, jokes and whatever this book is left with around 1/3 of its content. I'll wait before getting the next one because if the sex obsession of the writer continues then I don't want to read anymore about it.

Not good.
Revisado: 05-15-23
This litrpg story would have been better if there were no litrpg mechanics at all. Wich is hilarious. Example : lvling doesn't matter. A sneak attack allows people to overcome a 100 lvl difference. And of course the mc is the only one actively using this tactic for killing npc's. Since gamers never would do anything like that normally and you have to be special to do such a thing. Of course.
Sarcasm off. Every action the mc takes in the game works out for him. Every single thing. And that was ultimately the reason I couldn't finish the last hour if it. There is no adversity only a thin layer of pretending and you already know the MC will win because he's so smart and powerful and gets the right ability handed to him. All the time.

After manifesting thorned magic and nearly destroying his hometown, Kieren Belltower is summoned to join the Magic Service—an institution in charge of magical affairs—and start an apprenticeship with a high-ranking magician. But instead of the mage assigned to teach him, Kieren is greeted by his haughty and annoyingly handsome senior apprentice Esten, who clearly has more important things to do than chaperone some newbie.

Bit dissapointed, got halfway through.
Revisado: 03-19-23
I'm a bit dissapointed with this book. I got it recommended as well written fantasy with gay MC but I feel like it's more romance with a fantasy framework. It's not smut though so I guess that's a positive. The only thing in the story that the MC reacts to is the love interest. Nothing else seems to provoke much emotion. I think this book would have been better if the love interest was the MC at least that way there would be emotions other than the first love stuff we got. The world itself did not feel very well thought out. It left me with a lot of questions that didn't make any sense at all and left me feeling very disconnected.
Conclusion:
Narrator: okay.
Story: not very good. The worldbuilding feels quite shallow.
Romance: cliche but I guess that is good.
Writing: good quality of the writing.

Nice listen, looking forward to the sequel.
Revisado: 06-01-22
Overall I liked this book a lot. I just have 2 remarks.
1 there was a bit too much social criticism ging on or the criticism was a bit too recognizable versus their real world origins. That took me out of the immersion a couple of times.
2 the choice of the narrator being a woman blurred the lines of the mc being a gay guy or a woman. Especially in the beginning its hard to see the mc as a guy because he has quite a few stereotypical feminin mannerisms and thought processes and it's a woman's voice speaking. Despite that bit of dissonance the narrator was a true joy to listen to. She's very skilled and I'd love to read some more fantasy books narrated by her.
Overall I like the story a lot. It's not the best of the best but it is enjoyable enough that I look forward to a a sequel.

I am divided between 2/5 and 4/5.
Revisado: 11-28-21
This story was good. The protagonist has it a bit too easy to gain power in my opinion. Maybe his lvling will slow down later but in this book he goes from low e-rank to high b-rank in a few training sessions off screen and it doesn't seem very impactful for him. And it makes him already feel totally OP wich is a negative since his challenges are about fighting. Thus his fights lack any semblance of tension. The side characters are decent.
The narrator is good except for the "sound effects" the screeching was awkward and not enjoyable at all.
To be honest I expected and wanted a bit more than I got from this book. And a bit less easy progress more tense fights and it would have been fantastic.
