Historia
The Inventive Peasant Arnaud du Tilh had almost persuaded the learned judges at the Parlement of Toulouse, when on a summer's day in 1560 a man swaggered into the court on a wooden leg, denounced Arnaud, and reestablished his claim to the identity, property, and wife of Martin Guerre. The astonishing case captured the imagination of the Continent. Natalie Zemon Davis reconstructs the lives of ordinary people, in a sparkling way that reveals the hidden attachments and sensibilities of nonliterate 16th-century villagers.

Very Very Good
Revisado: 12-06-21
highly recommend. the reader has a very nice voice. the storytelling style was easily digestible. the story itself is absolutely bonkers. made even more bonkers by the fact that it's based in reality and was a real court case.

Historia
“Doomed from birth” was how psychologist Harold Skeels described two girls at the Orphans’ Home in Davenport, Iowa, in 1934. Following prevailing eugenic beliefs, Skeels and his colleague Marie Skodak assumed that the girls had inherited their parents’ low intelligence and sent them to an institution. To their astonishment, under the women’s care, the children’s IQ scores became normal. Recasting Skeels and his team as intrepid heroes, Marilyn Brookwood weaves years of prodigious archival research to show how after decades of backlash, the Iowans finally prevailed.

One kf the best nonfiction books I've listened to/read. I think it is an especially important read for Americans to understand our own history and views on family, poverty, classism, antisemitism and eugenics.
while the book didn't go into racism as deeply as j think it could have, it did touch kn it and it's influence.

So, at the age of 13, the boy receives his true name - Ged - and gives himself over to the gentle tutelage of the Master Ogion. But impatient with the slowness of his studies and infatuated with glory, Ged embarks for the Island of Roke, where the highest arts of wizardry are taught.

Style and Time Period it was Made
Revisado: 08-16-21
this is written like a biography of Sparrowhawk. Ursula K. Le Guin is a good writer, I also liked the worldbuilding. its also really cool that a fantasy book has more then white people in it.
But about halfway through, and all the way until the end, the lack of female characters that really did anything got more and more annoying and rubbed me the wrong way.
Woman's magic is weak, and wicked. the first female character tries to magically bind Sparrowhawk into her service. The second tricks him into casting a ln evil spell. the third appears for one scene amd is pretty and pale. The second comes back, tries to trick him again, and dies. the last female character is a little sister and her personality is described as like a minnow. she cooks them food.
All the male characters were very interesting, but it felt weird for there to be no women of consequence at all.

Historia
William Wordsworth (1770-1850) was born in Cockermouth, in the Lake District. His Lyrical Ballads, written in collaboration with Coleridge, was published in 1798, and shortly afterwards he settled in Dove Cottage, Grasmere, with his sister Dorothy. Inspired in his early manhood by the French Revolution, he grew disillusioned with revolutionary politics and in later life became decidedly conservative. He left a vast body of work, ranging from delicately simple lyrics to deeply meditative odes.

I liked the younger narrator, not the older one.
Revisado: 06-11-21
I like listening to books and dont mind as much when the narrator puts different tones into it because at the end of the day its the same story regardless.
poetry is not like that, a different tone or inflection can change the meaning of a line, and I feel one of the narrator's missed the mark for me more often than not.
I love wordsworth's poems regardless though.

The Mongol queens of the thirteenth century ruled the greatest empire the world has ever known. Yet sometime near the end of the century, censors cut a section from The Secret History of the Mongols, leaving a single tantalizing quote from Genghis Khan: “Let us reward our female offspring.”

Only Listened to the last Chapter
Revisado: 05-20-21
only listened to the last chapter because I actually own the paperback version of it, but about 20 pages were missing and they were, of course, the LAST 20 pages. couldn't wait to buy another paper copy of the book so i got it here.
I really like the book so of course I like the story, but cant speak for the performance.

I love this
Revisado: 04-04-21
The sound quality isn't fantastic, but Kimmerer sounds like a soft spoken mother telling you a bedtime story, or sharing a memory from the porch. The emotion in the book is easy to feel and appreciate. The science and spirituality blend seamlessly with her recollections.
I'm seriously considering going into bryology because of this book.

Very Good

I am new to True Crime and to podcasts. I appreciate how professional the investigation seems to be and the focus on the victim and not necessarily the crime itself. at this point ive only listened to 2 episodes but it is very good.

Over 5,000 years, India has been home to a rich tapestry of peoples and cultures. Two of the world's great religions - Hinduism and Buddhism - have their origins in South Asia, and the lands east of the Indus River have long been a central hub for trade, migration, and cultural exchange. Professor Pierre Aronnax, a French marine biologist and narrator of the story, who happens to be in New York at the time, receives a last-minute invitation to join the expedition which he accepts. Good Story, Okay Performance
Revisado: 11-20-19
the Canadian character has a US accent, not a canadian one. The other characters have british accents.
the story is good as long as you don't mind long winded explanations of sea creatures and their habits that have been debunked by modern science.
Still, being an artifact of its time its still fun to explore the oceans with the characters, even though there are some side plots that aren't resolved all the way.
