Historia
After nearly eighteen months at Basgiath War College, Violet Sorrengail knows there’s no more time for lessons. No more time for uncertainty. Because the battle has truly begun, and with enemies closing in from outside their walls and within their ranks, it’s impossible to know who to trust. Now Violet must journey beyond the failing Aretian wards to seek allies from unfamiliar lands to stand with Navarre. The trip will test every bit of her wit, luck, and strength, but she will do anything to save what she loves—her dragons, her family, her home, and him.

Didn’t enjoy this one
Revisado: 03-11-25
So I kind liked the first book, but the characters haven’t matured. The macho, possessive angst of the ML is grating. It just keeps getting darker. Won’t continue with the series.

Ugh, long and repetitive
Revisado: 12-26-24
Had a hard time getting through this one. I liked the first two books, although I found all the sexual innuendo in the second one a little juvenile. This one took it much further and was also long, repetitive, and had a lot of unnecessary content. The middle section with the orgies… why?! What was the point of all that? The characters actually lost dimension, so much that I wonder if this is the sane author, or something critical about the editing process changed. If the first book had been written like this I would not have bought the others.

Gory
Revisado: 12-20-24
So gory it borders on horror, which is not a genre I enjoy. I did appreciate that you can’t always tell the villains and heroes apart. The book was well written. Some vampire books are relatively tame, so thought I’d take a chance. Blood and violence just aren’t my thing.

Historia
Twenty-four-year-old Saeris Fane is good at keeping secrets. No one knows about the strange powers she possesses or the fact that she has been picking pockets and stealing from the Undying Queen's reservoirs for as long as she can remember. But a secret is like a knot. Sooner or later, it is bound to come undone. When Saeris comes face-to-face with Death himself, she inadvertently reopens a gateway between realms and is transported to a land of ice and snow. The Fae have always been the stuff of myth, of legend, of nightmares… but it turns out they're real.

Beauty and the Beast with Fae, Vampires, and sex
Revisado: 12-17-24
So maybe this just isn’t my thing. The two narrators were an interesting choice, but the male narrator mostly showed up during the sex scenes. The dirty talk suddenly switching between narrators was cringey, although the dialog itself in those scenes was a bit cringey. The final plot point at the end, the way a main character kills another, was completely unbelievable.

Loved it
Revisado: 10-31-24
Some reviewers didn’t enjoy the narrator, but I thought she was great. The accent was appropriate. The story did a good job of highlighting the horror of war, revenge, love and forgiveness. I don’t especially enjoy it when the mc falls for a toxic partner, so the romantic aspect of the story wasn’t my favorite. However that was a minor plot point for me. As another reviewer said, the sex scene was unnecessary. A different expression of connection might have softened my dislike of the male lead, but perhaps that was a deliberate choice by the author.

Historia
Most people want to avoid thinking about death, but Caitlin Doughty - a 20-something with a degree in medieval history and a flair for the macabre - took a job at a crematory, turning morbid curiosity into her life’s work. With an original voice that combines fearless curiosity and mordant wit, Caitlin tells an unusual coming-of-age story full of bizarre encounters, gallows humor, and vivid characters (both living and very dead).

Wow, an unexpected gem
Revisado: 09-18-24
This is one of the best books I have heard this year. While I personally have no fascination with death, I appreciate how the author used her experiences at a crematorium to help resolve her childhood trauma and find meaning in the complexities of adult life. Some of the descriptions were a little gross, but the author’s point that these also are a part of the reality of being human was thought provoking. Good job to Caitlin Doughty for writing something so interesting and heartfelt about a topic that is normally taboo.

Gary Stu novel
Revisado: 08-21-24
MC was a bit of a Gary Stu. Some definite wish fulfillment. The idea that he educates a society about science and math is somewhat plausible given the premise, but at the climax he suggests a critical military strategy, which leads people to see him as a prophet. Didn’t think that was necessary or plausible given how little the MC knows about military strategy. The characters don’t develop dimension, so it was hard for me to fully engage. I hope the rest of the series is better, but I won’t listen to more from this author,

Didn’t love it
Revisado: 08-12-24
It wasn’t a terrible book, but not one of the best I have heard. A little political. Tried to listen on a road trip with my dad, and he asked me to turn it off. Definitely not for the retired, conservative set. I finished it on my own, but listened on triple speed.

Now, seventy years later, the pledge is being fulfilled by American missionary Pastor Billy, brash gunner’s mate Ian Ferguson, and local soldier Liu Zhaohu. All that’s missing is Ah Yan - also known as Swallow.

What a wonderful book
Revisado: 07-17-24
Normally I don’t enjoy war books, but this was really about love and forgiveness. Beautifully written. Appreciated the different perspectives. The final reveal was a tad unsatisfying, although consistent with the characters.

Not the best in the series
Revisado: 07-08-24
Didn’t enjoy this book as much as the others and sped up the narration more and more towards the end. The quest was contrived. The Cresta arch was confusing. For most of the book I was wondering “Why is she here? And why is she suddenly friends with everyone?” The inconsistent accents were more noticeable and confusing than in the previous books. Why does Mirryn have a weird British accent when Jaren doesn’t? I appreciate that the author tackles difficult topics like abuse, addiction and depression, but it didn’t quite come together. If this had been the first book I would not have continued.
