Disappointed
Revisado: 01-06-25
I enjoy historical fiction and based on other review was looking forward to this series. The story is interesting but after 12 chapters I am not continuing. I find the heroine to be shallow and weak . The dialogue between the hero and heroine feels contrived. I do want to know what happens and wish I could find a plot summary, but am not enjoying the storytelling

Historia
The description of his ancestral seat as an earthly Paradise would, at present, have struck its proprietor as ironical, full as it was with unwanted and troublesome inhabitants. What Lord Elmsworth needed above all was a rugged ally at his side to remove from Blandings its superfluous guests, leaving him in peace to tend to his beloved pig, Empress of Blandings. However, when Lord Ickenham is on a sweetness-and-light-spreading expedition, there's always apt to be trouble.

Love Wodehouse but disappointed in narration
Revisado: 07-28-15
The story is another great Blandings adventure. Unfortunately, I don't care for the narrator's interpretation of several characters In particular, his Lord Ickenham lacks the the depth and subtlety that Jonathan Cecil gives him. Also, Myra Schoonmaker comes across as a whiny ninny.

Historia
Jim Dixon has accidentally fallen into a job at one of Britain's new redbrick universities. A moderately successful future in the History Department beckons if he can survive the probationary year. Not the least of his problems is the necessity to keep in with his eccentric Professor Welch, who although detested and despised by Jim, has sufficient influence in the faculty to affect the continuation of his appointment.

Any additional comments?
A friend had read Lucky Jim and recommended it to me. I had hoped for something light and humorous but found this to be uninteresting. I stopped listening after about an hour and a half.

Historia
"I suffered much cruelty as an unmarried mother and I had no recourse when they took my boy away from me. I had no rights, no prospects, no future. Everyone believed I was ruined. But no one knew the secrets of my own childhood, nor could they ever have imagined the dangerous and heretical scheme I would devise to protect and watch over my remarkable son as he grew in to manhood. Some might call me a liar, since all I describe would be impossible for a woman of my station. But that is where my design unfolds...."

Too much Harlequin Romance
Revisado: 08-16-10
I expected a historical novel and felt like I got a romance novel set in the 1400s. I do like Jane Austen and the historical mystery romances by Tasha Alexander, so I'm not anti-romance. But, I did not like Signora da Vinci and only listened to about 1/4. I wanted to like it. I planned to listen to it while flying to Italy this summer and it seemed perfect:, but I just couldn't finish it. The author seemed to have done her research and the premise was interesting, but it came across as fluffy and breathless- perhaps my opinion was negatively influenced by the narrator's style...

Historia
This, the first title in the Port William series, introduces the rural section of Kentucky with which novelist Wendell Berry has had a lifelong fascination. When young Nathan loses his grandfather, Berry guides listeners through the process of Nathan's grief, endearing the listener to the simple humanity through which Nathan views the world.

Beautifully written, well read
Revisado: 08-16-10
Wendell Berry has been on my reading "to do" list for a long time and Nathan Coulter was my first opportunity. It was everything I had hoped for: honest, real, deep character development; fantastic imagery; and a solid story. I enjoy mysteries, adventures and other story-driven books that I can't put down. But, I like to have audiobooks available on my ipod to make good use of driving time and so I want something that I can "put down" until my next long drive. Nathan Coulter filled that perfectly. I thoroughly enjoyed listening, but could stop and start as time allowed. The narrator has a pleasant, deep voice that fit the book well.
