The aliens tested humans on an individual basis for miner rentals. Do well on your pilot test, get a spaceship, sign up with a corp, and you can mine the belt. For a puddle-jumper pilot like me, yeah, I was so interested I became obsessed. When I finally tested, I performed above and beyond, being offered a contract for some better than a miner - Earth's First Starfighter.

Part of the performance is awful.

I liked the premise of the story. What I didn't like was the performance for the female voices. About 3/4 through the first book I gave up as I couldn't take the performance anymore

Couldn't stop listening

This is one of the best series I have listened to. It's well written and the performance is excellent. The story captivates you and you can't wait to find out what happens next. I was sad it ended.

Some good action in a amusing story.

This book was written in 1993. The doom and gloom that's in this book was being peddled routinely then. Since then the goal post as been moved so many times. What hasn't changed, and never seems to, is that it's still 10 years away and always stays 10 years away. Overlooking this, and that a former U.S. President has no secret service detail, the action and intrigue were not bad. The narration is excellent. There's some new interesting characters.

Hidden good story

There's a good story here and the story itself rates 4-5 stars. The problem is it's hidden in endless useless descriptions. The descriptions are also like trying to describe some new age art the nobody understands anyway. It takes over 3 hours for the story to get going. Once it does, the listen gets better.
