Historia
Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction." She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail.

Raw honesty

I don’t relate to the story but I felt Jenette’s healing through this story. It takes a lot of courage to publicly heal the way she is. The reading was too quick but everything else was perfect!

Historia
It is the summer of 1940. Nineteen-year-old Vivian Morris arrives in New York with her suitcase and sewing machine, exiled by her despairing parents. Although her quicksilver talents with a needle and commitment to mastering the perfect hair roll have been deemed insufficient for her to pass into her sophomore year of Vassar, she soon finds gainful employment as the self-appointed seamstress at the Lily Playhouse, her unconventional Aunt Peg's charmingly disreputable Manhattan revue theatre.

Historia
Rumi's inspiring and deceptively simple poems have been called ecstatic, mystical, and devotional. To writer and activist Melody Moezzi, they became a lifeline. In The Rumi Prescription, we follow her path of discovery as she translates Rumi's works for herself - to gain wisdom and insight in the face of a creative and spiritual roadblock. With the help of her father, who is a lifelong fan of Rumi's poetry, she immerses herself in this rich body of work, and discovers a 13th-century prescription for modern life.

Hisham Matar was 19 when his father was kidnapped and taken to prison in Libya. He would never see him again. Twenty-two years later, after the fall of Gaddafi, Hisham was finally able to return to his homeland for the first time. In this heartbreaking, illuminating memoir, he describes his return to a country and a family he thought he would never see again. The Return is at once a universal and an intensely personal tale of loss. It is an exquisite meditation on history, politics and art.

Very rare a book or an author can take me into his or her journey so deeply ... maybe it’s the story, the narration, the beautiful writing or a combination of all of them! I felt Hisham’s pain, his disappointment, and his longing ... I savoured it till the last second .

Finally a book I can relate to! Alya is a wonderful writer and a brilliant narrator. Some parts made me laugh, others brought me to tears cause I have felt the struggle. It’s takes a lot of work to be able to write about topics that have been drilled in our heads as a taboo ... a must listen to Arabs and non Arabs equally.

Historia
Beloved author Elizabeth Gilbert returns to fiction with a unique love story set in the New York City theater world during the 1940s. Told from the perspective of an older woman as she looks back on her youth with both pleasure and regret (but mostly pleasure), City of Girls explores themes of female sexuality and promiscuity, as well as the idiosyncrasies of true love. In 1940, nineteen-year-old Vivian Morris has just been kicked out of Vassar College, owing to her lackluster freshman-year performance.

It’s that kind of book
Revisado: 08-25-19
I usually pick my books based on reviews and this one has the most extreme LOVE HATE reviews I’ve ever come across! So I decided to give it a listen... and I get it!
It’s one of those books that you either absolutely loveeee or find it absolutely Mehh...
lemme help you out, first I got lost in the characters and NO there’s not a lot of sex like the comments mentioned, it’s sensual and used to explain the full picture.
Then I started understanding the characters and my god how well written they are! It’s raw , it’s real, it unpolished. I’m one of the ones that absolutely fell in love with it and I hope you do too...
and if you don’t, that’s ok too :)
