This book was delightful. The characters were well drawn, flawed and funny. The plot was complicated and suspenseful.

The Benjamin January books are extraordinary. The historical detail, character development and suspense are wonderful. I was so excited to see them on audible, I hope the rest of the series will become available.

I think Ron Butler does an excellent job with narration. I have seen some complaints from other listeners, but I disagree with their point of view. The January novels are not written in first person, so it does not make sense to have a narrator who sounds only like a 6"4" free black man of color from New Orleans. Mr. Butler is able to perform multiple character's voices.

I love this series and am so excited to see it available on audible! I hope to be able to listen to the rest of the novels.

This book sounds like it was written by a 12 year old boy who loves Rambo movies. It is full of cliches, ridiculous plot turns and flat characters.

The narrator is simultaneously over dramatic and weirdly perky. Possibly she is trying to compensate for the poor writing quality?

I have listened to other books by this writer, and, while they were not fantastic, they were at least competently written and entertaining.

What disappointed you about Her Darkest Nightmare?

The characters were flat and unbelievable. The plot was silly. Too much crude sex talk.

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

The narrator did a good job of differentiating male and female voices, but her rendition of the female lead was too breathy and helpless.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

I didn't finish it, which is rare.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

I don't mind suspending disbelief for a fun story, but this book was both unbelievable and predictable.

What was most disappointing about Mary Burton’s story?

I have listened to several of her other books and found them entertaining and well written. This book seemed to have been slapped together in about two weeks.

Would you be willing to try another one of Christina Traister’s performances?

Yes. Perhaps another genre would suit her reading style.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Shark?

All of the cliches, which would have left very little of the book.

Any additional comments?

Awesome book, but...

The book itself was great! Funny, good characters, and it goes at a fast pace. The only downside was the narrator Riordan chose. I had already read the book and that not what I imagined magnus sounding like at all. The voice was kind of nasally and the sarcastic comments sounded forced. I recommend reading this as an eBook.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I would recommend this book to a friend who has read the first two books and who has a lot of patience to wade through tedious ramblings. The story does reach resolution after a great deal of wallowing in wordy angst.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

I was relieved to have the story wrapped up, but a little put off by all the gushy, sentimentality.

What three words best describe Scott Brick’s performance?

Resonant, intense, emotional.

Was The City of Mirrors worth the listening time?

Yes, but expect to be drumming your fingers through a good 30% of the book.

Any additional comments?

While listening to this book I wondered if Mr. Cronin had been pressured into releasing it before it was ready for public consumption. A re-release as a "non-author's cut" would be most welcome.

This audio book turned out to be a series of poorly narrated scenes in which characters encountered obstacles and prayed a lot. If this book had been described as "Christian Lit" I would never have purchased it. Now I will find out how I can get my money back.

In a nutshell:

1. Dave is a funny character

2. Howie has a tantrum when "his people" dare to disagree with him.

4. After a certain number of gory, slimy, zombie smiting battles; I don't really need the nasty details anymore. A summary is good enough. "Our heroes fought against enormous quantities of zombies and won again".

5. Darren is whipped. Funny social commentary.

6. Why do so many heroes in zombie stories end up with gorgeous, VERY young girls?
Actually, I think I know the answer, but I had thought better of this writer.

7. Someone in this story actually got all warm and fuzzy while wishing he'd had an "alpha male" in his life while growing up.

8. Great narration.

9. I won't be listening to anymore of the adventures of Mr. Howie and Dave.

10. Bummer! This series had potential.
