Well written, well read, and highly informative and interesting. It spans the roots and origins of the CIA up through the last few years of the Afghanistan war.

An interesting addition to the fantasy genre
Revisado: 01-26-24
It takes a bit to actually get interested and invested in the plot and characters, but once you do, it is worth the read. I do wish that the reader read the battle scenes with less of a 'depressingly wistful' tone, but other than that, it was very well done.

An excellent opening to a highly promising series
Revisado: 11-07-23
Pleasant pros, steady pace, and well laid out for the first of a series. The magic system is intriguing and the world is well established and described, and the material is very well read. I look forward to the next instalment. If one enjoys Joe Abercrombie and Brian McClellan, one will enjoy this.

As politics and power clash, Kayna, a Seeker, and Ord, a priest of the Church of Alchemy, find their foundations of loyalty and faith shaken and crumbling. In this theater of chaos, magic, and treachery, soldier and priest alike will find their humanity in as much danger as their lives.

Overall, there is nothing to recommend in it
Revisado: 11-07-23
A struggle to finish it, due to two aspects: 1. the reader somehow makes everyone sound as if they are whining and moaning, no matter what they are saying; and 2. the author spends a lot of time talking directly about how people feel about things rather than providing details about the state of things. This result of both of these is the book having at atmosphere of whiny angst rather than grimm-dark. There is quite a bit of re-hashing the same topic and how everyone feels about it rather than plot movement.
Overall there is nothing about the book that makes it a must read.

Lackluster
Revisado: 10-06-23
Unfortunately predictable, somewhat slow, and cliche in its plot. Young adult fantasy for sure. There was also at least one notable mistake where an item was used to push off of, but the item is made out of the wrong metal for that action, according to the magic system.

Historia
When Rin aced the Keju - the Empire-wide test to find the most talented youth to learn at the Academies - it was a shock to everyone: to the test officials, who couldn’t believe a war orphan from Rooster Province could pass without cheating; to Rin’s guardians, who believed they’d finally be able to marry her off and further their criminal enterprise; and to Rin herself, who realized she was finally free of the servitude and despair that had made up her daily existence. That she got into Sinegard - the most elite military school in Nikan - was even more surprising.

It started well...
Revisado: 08-01-22
Many people dislike the book for its graphic content. I have no such quam.
I was told that this was a good adult military fantasy; so, mayhaps I was expecting it to be something that it was never meant to be.
I genuinely enjoyed the first portion of the book. The main character was a go getter and an individual who could examine the facts of a situation, reason them out, and act accordingly. The academy portion of the book contained good military tactical discussions, and the characters had good depth. Somewhere around the middle of the book there was a massive and undiscussed change in the main characters behavior that, frankly, just made me wish someone would slap her (Spoiler Alert: Someone eventually did...it didn't help. Lack of self awareness, I suppose.).
It goes downhill from there. Once the war starts, almost no military writing was involved and the book becomes all about how the main character feels about what happens. At which point the reader couldn't care less because the main character has become a power-hungry, cowardly, self-righteous dead-weight (who can't even defend herself against a wild dog) in what is supposed to be the equivalent of an special operations unit with mystical capabilities. She temds to blame everyone else for her issues and accuse them of things that she, infact, is doing. An overall, pathetic individual.
The beginning of the book reads well as a solid and mature fantasy novel. The second half feels like it was written by a different person for a Y/A fantasy with all of the main characters being overly involved and controlled by their feelings. I finished it to see if perhaps it got better toward the end, but no dice. I likely will not continue the series.

A good Socio/Political Intrigue
Revisado: 06-02-22
Excellent performance.
The story itself was very well written with lots of intrigue, and was certainly less military focused than the first book of the series, because it had to be. If I am asked to be critical, I will say that some of the intrigue would have been more well rounded (as in, have greater stakes with more twists)- again being highly critical. overall I would definitely still suggest the book. It is a natural follow-on to the first book of the series.
