Good character development -fun read
Revisado: 11-01-24
I liked the mysteries and enjoyed the characters. The narration was pretty good, good differentiation of voices for each character. Also enjoyed the descriptions of the English countryside.

I enjoyed the plot, the football references, and the suspense. Also the San Francisco setting. The narrator was very good, too.

Historia
The number one New York Times best-selling story about American Olympic triumph in Nazi Germany, the inspiration for the PBS documentary The Boys of '36, broadcast to coincide with the 2016 Summer Olympics and the 80th anniversary of the boys' gold medal race. Out of the depths of the Depression comes an irresistible story about beating the odds and finding hope in the most desperate of times - the improbable, intimate account of how nine working-class boys from the American West showed the world at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin what true grit really meant.

The drama of competition and the perseverance of the American spirit
Revisado: 06-24-24
I never cared at all about rowing as a competitive sport, but after listening to Edward Hermann read this book, I will definitely pay more attention to it. The best part of the book is the author’s vivid descriptions of characters, time, place, and circumstances surrounding the American rowing team who prevailed in the 1936 Berlin Olympics. It was an emotional experience that made me feel as if I was there as an observer of all that happened. Inspirational, and a fantastic read/listen.

I’m so glad I got the audio version of this book. Barbra’s story is inspiring and mirrors much of my own struggles as a woman in a male-dominated profession. Kudos to Barbra for persevering and preserving so many aspects of her interesting life.

Good story, not so good narration, too much religion
Revisado: 04-16-22
The story was a good depiction of life in Paris during WWII, the characters were interesting and compelling. However there was a heavy overtone of religion (I’m Christian, but this story was constantly overbearing on the subject, to the point of annoyance) that I could have done without. Also, the narration was distracting in that the voices of the characters were too similar, and the narrator has an extremely poor French accent. It seems she never actually studied how certain names and words are pronounced. Grated on my nerves.

I really enjoyed the reader—authentic Irish accent and good voice portrayal. The characters were well-developed and relatable. If I could change one thing, it would be that there were a few loose ends hanging. I am looking forward to listening to the next book in the series.

A fascinating view of the Okie migration and the Dust Bowl
Revisado: 04-14-21
The author does a wonderful job of providing a woman’s perspective that is seldom seen in literature describing the Great Depression. Her characters are real and believable, and she provides a boots-on-the-ground narrative about what it was like to be starving and poor in America. My parents were both children of the Great Depression and this book helped to make their own stories of hardship more real to me. The narration was excellent, and really gave life to all of the characters. I highly recommend this book, especially to students of women’s history and political science.

Historia
Arguably the most important American lawyer of the 20th century, Thurgood Marshall was on the verge of bringing the landmark suit Brown v. Board of Education before the US Supreme Court when he became embroiled in a case that threatened to change the course of the civil rights movement and to cost him his life. In 1949, Florida's orange industry was booming, and citrus barons got rich on the backs of cheap Jim Crow labor with the help of Sheriff Willis V. McCall, who ruled Lake County with murderous resolve....

The shame of Florida
Revisado: 02-05-21
Though certainly aware of the abuses of Black people in the Jim Crow south, this book provides an in depth factual account of the deeply rooted racism in Florida, the cruelty of law enforcement, and the too-blind eyes of Justice that led to mass executions of Black people in that state. The reader was awesome and did a good job with dialects and voice impressions of the individuals involved. The intelligence, courage and tenacity of Thurgood Marshall cannot be doubted and played a huge role in bringing the disgrace of racism to public scrutiny. Though his personal failings in his marriage do not escape depiction in the story, it lends a neutrality to the story that makes the goings on in the “justice system” all the more real.

The Fall of the House of Zeus tells the story of Dickie Scruggs, arguably the most successful plaintiff's lawyer in America. A brother-in-law of Trent Lott, the former U.S. Senate majority leader, Scruggs made a fortune taking on mass tort lawsuits against "Big Tobacco" and the asbestos industries. He was hailed by Newsweek as a latter-day Robin Hood and portrayed in the movie The Insider as a dapper aviator-lawyer.

Sad story
Revisado: 12-23-20
As an attorney, the events described in this book are a sad tale of big money and political corruption in the Mississippi judicial system. An otherwise good lawyer being brought down by unadulterated greed, and professional jealousy.
