Incredibly Disappointing

I think this book has that "idiot's plot" thing going where nothing can happen or make sense unless everyone is an idiot.

I mean. The main character only has to repeat what he did in the 1st book, and everyone coulda lived happily ever after, but no.

These aren't regular ole schmucks either. They're supposedly special forces with decades of experience. Unfortunately, these can't plan or think 5 minutes ahead with any semblance of sense.

I realize this isn't supposed to be profound reading, but everyone in the story can't conveniently be an idiot because the author needs something to happen.

Ending is supposed to be tragic, but I found it hard to care about the characters since so much is the product of their own stupidity.

I kept thinking this series would improve, that the MC would mature, that all the threats introduced would impact the story more, but it...just doesn't.

The only thing that can fix it is the MC is catapulted into the sun and never seen again.

Patting women on the head, lame attempts at humor that then get milked out to a nails on chalkboard extent, yeeting the MC out of any consequences he should face for ignoring the responsibilities and dangers of the world, MC ignoring his newly discovered family after spending 2 books trying to find them, it just keeps getting worse.

Avoid.

Excellent accounting of the narratives while trying to present evidence and avoid dry exposition. Narrator does well also.

People always say they want the truth not filtered by pundits and activists. Well, you get it direct from the source here by one of codetalkers themselves.

As we keep losing more and more from those generations, accounts like these will only grow in value, a glimpse into real events not even talked about at the time.

After reading this, you'll realize how bad Netflix dropped the ball.

Takeshi Kovacs is the determined but flawed protagonist, "brought back to life" to solve a murder mystery that's so much more.

An incredibly fleshed out scifi universe in the same vein as Blade Runner, it will keep you intrigued until the end.

It's not for the faint of heart, though. In a future where ppl can swap bodies to experience different things, some will chose the most awful things imaginable.

When you start your character off too powerful

Look, I get it. Most of these are power fantasies with varying doses of sex and "leveling up, but in this case the MC is just way too powerful right out of the gate.

He destroys a god level threat by himself at the end of the book, and we find out he "accidentally" killed one of the most powerful supers earlier. If nothing can threaten him, even in the first book, where does that leave you to go?

Title/synopsis are a bit misleading too. Not really much that's morally gray or complex here. Just institutional corruption and government incompetence.

Budget Thor trains baby Yoda and finds some sexy women. Maybe there will eventually be more of a plot in the next book...cause this one sure didn't have enough.

Chuck Norris stars in a Tom Clancy story about the Walking Dead.

Now, if you like all those things, you'd be tempted to think it would be good, but I gotta say, the MC guy who, despite being former special forces/highly trained etc, bumbling into the most basic traps/ambushes and trying face tank his way out just really doesn't work in something that tries to be realistic.

Characters never get first names, and dialogue turns into star wars prequel material at times.

Plot is fairly predictable once it gets going, which takes longer than it should, and ending is hilariously tied up way too easily.

Narrator was pretty good, except his female voices were not convincing at all, but there are really only 2 women in the story. So it doesn't come up that often.

It's unfortunate that these series always tend to get worse the longer they go on. Plot holes, character inconsistencies, not taking proper time for character development, or world building, even the sex scenes get worse despite increasing in frequency.

I really wish authors could be bothered to put as much thought and effort into the endings as they do the beginnings. To make matters worse, the male narrator sounds like he's about to fall asleep half the time.

Hazel Cohen as the female narrator was fine, but that was about the only bright spot. Everything else felt forced or rushed.

Takes a bit to get going, but eventually you get sucked into Lana's plight to determine exactly what happened on "The Blue" and if/who she can trust.

The only reason I didn't give it five stars was cause I felt the end was a little rushed, left a few things askew, and some character stuff did not seem convincing, despite what we're told.
