Started out well but soon became a 20-something Christmas romance novel.. Which is what I was attempting to avoid.

Historia
In present-day California, Eleanor Bennett’s death leaves behind a puzzling inheritance for her two children, Byron and Benny: a black cake, made from a family recipe with a long history, and a voice recording. In her message, Eleanor shares a tumultuous story about a headstrong young swimmer who escapes her island home under suspicion of murder. The heartbreaking tale Eleanor unfolds, the secrets she still holds back, and the mystery of a long-lost child challenge everything the siblings thought they knew about their lineage and themselves.

Skip the book and watch the Hulu show
Revisado: 02-17-24
I'm a liberal and I believe all the injustices experienced by these characters are real and must charge. But this was a terrible audiobook. If you have to read this for a book club get the printed version or, better, watch the Hulu show if it's out.
A few angry monologues, ok. But you expect characters to grow, have some charge in perspective, throughout a long story. But at least two of the main chapters just marinated in their bitterness and rehashed the same wrongs done to them. There was a very interesting storyline told by their now-deceased mother. That would have made a good novella. But the present-day characters made for a very unpleasant 9 hours of listening. I would have returned this if not for my book club.
The final 3 hours were fairly pleasant but not particularly interesting. Things were wrapped up with telling rather than showing. The gripping characters seemed to have improved their lot but rather than changing their monologues they just stopped having them (mostly).
I haven't seen the Hulu show that adapted this book. But far better to watch than here this story, I think.

Worth a second shot
Revisado: 12-05-23
It. took me two tries to get into it. I think it was too gritty for my mood the first time. The main character was in a bad place at the start. But I didn't find that so affecting the service time around and the main character slowly pulls herself out into more hopeful territory. Glad I gave it a second try and looking forward to the rest of the series.

Here is the novel that will be forever considered a triumph of the imagination. Set on the desert planet Arrakis, Dune is the story of the boy Paul Atreides, who would become the mysterious man known as Maud'dib. He would avenge the traitorous plot against his noble family and would bring to fruition humankind's most ancient and unattainable dream.

This classic deserves better

Surprised at how sexist the book is vs the movie
Revisado: 06-17-23
Herbert is an excellent writer and includes pivotal female lead characters. So it's very interesting how the author still manages to undermine his own strong female lead characters. They must be strong women to have achieved and move events as he describes. Yet he narrates them as psychologically weak and is sexually objectifying in how he describes them. It's subtle but disturbing enough to distract from the enjoyment I would usually get from a sci-fi classic. It's really fascinating how much an author's psychology is revealed in their writing. The main take-away for me, from this book which was written in 1965, is that we have grown, psychologically, as a society. An enjoyable lesson, but not such an enjoyable listen. I will skip the rest of the books and enjoy the excellent modern movies as they come out.

Rambling & fluffy
Revisado: 06-17-23
Gilbert's YouTube video about Vocation vs. Avocation inspired me to buy this book but there's just not enough meat on these bones for a book. It was more like a biography, lots of "I" and "me", rather than an interesting discussion. I didn't get through more than a few chapters.

Two-time Emmy Award nominee ( The Good Wife) and Audie Award winner for best narrator Alan Cumming here narrates Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's first-rate Yuletide whodunit "The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle". Cumming adds his personal flair to the mystery classic and turns in an outstanding performance of the great detective Sherlock Holmes and his pal, Watson.

Historia
When Jenny inherits her estranged grandmother’s cottage in Sherwood Forest, she has nothing to lose - no money, no job, no friends, no family to speak of, and zero self-respect. Things can only get better.... Her grumpy but decidedly handsome new neighbour, Mack, has a habit of bestowing unsolicited good deeds on her. And when Jenny is welcomed into a rather unusual book club, life seems to finally be getting more interesting. Instead of reading, the members pledge to complete individual challenges before Christmas.

Historia
When an intricate old map is found stuffed into the walls of the bistro in Three Pines, it at first seems no more than a curiosity. But the closer the villagers look, the stranger it becomes. Given to Armand Gamache as a gift the first day of his new job, the map eventually leads him to shattering secrets. To an old friend and older adversary. It leads the former Chief of Homicide for the Sûreté du Québec to places even he is afraid to go. But must. And there he finds four young cadets in the Sûreté academy, and a dead professor. And, with the body, a copy of the old, odd map.

She's back!
Revisado: 05-06-22
I was concerned after the last two novels that Louise Penny had lost her touch. But, for me, this is actually one of the best in the series. I think the new narrator also improved. Though not so vividly as with Ralph Cosham, I could begin to hear the characters voices again.

The sience based approach is better than this.
Revisado: 12-22-20
As an agnostic scientist, I find this book to have an occasional note of religious superiority (Buddhism). The narrators haughty tone amplifies this so be sure to listen to the sample... his intimations are consistent throughout.
However, I didn't put the book away for this reason. The real problem was that the concepts were not described as precisely as they are in science-based approaches. That makes sense, of course, since the purpose of science is clarity while the purpose of religion is.... not.
Even though this book was free I quit it and instead decided to purchase the Great Courses for research-based information on mindfulness. I also purchased Real Happiness which is a mindfulness-based 28 day meditation program.
I am, however, enjoying book 0 in this series (different narrator) and all are free with a membership (at the moment)

Unsatisfying ending
Revisado: 07-25-20
The bad guys succeed. The good guys lose but think they are okay with it and their lackluster continued existence. Basically, it's realistic.
What appealed to me was the early descriptions of an intellectually engaged woman and the salon she hosted. But that made it no further than a few lines about her intellectual gatherings (salons) in the first chapter. Eventually, we learn the protagonist was victimized and never recovered emotionally and so that is the reason for her life choices.
But it was well-written and one did get unique mental insight into what it was like for an intelligent, but not rebellious, woman to navigate the man's world of her time outside the traditional female role and psychology.
