Didn't get far
Revisado: 08-26-21
While I was listening to the book before this, I was trying to figure out why I liked this series at first and then suddenly I didn't anymore. Decided to give it another chance with this book, then I noticed that they changed narrators. That's why I didn't like the last book and I didn't make it far into this one. I'll skip to Book 8.

Historia
Often compared to both Ruth Rendell and P.D. James, Deborah Crombie is internationally acclaimed for her deftly written mysteries that combine suspense, with lyrical prose. Sharply etched characters further enrich this story of tangled relationships and dark secrets. Twelve years after their divorce, Scotland Yard Superintendent Duncan Kincaid receives a phone call from his ex-wife Victoria asking for his help.

Narration ruins the story
Revisado: 03-19-21
Maybe it's unfair to say that the narration ruined the story. It was written in a style different than the previous books so if it's difficult to tell whether it was the writing that made this one difficult to listen to or whether it was the narration. I will say that it didn't hold my attention through many parts yet I was still able to keep up.
The narrator made it unpleasant because her volume wasn't consistent. I hate it when I have to constantly turn the volume up and down because one character is so loud that he hurts my ears but the person he's speaking with is so quiet that I can't hear her.
There were other problems with the narration that other reviewers have already described so I won't pile on.
I would like to continue with this series because I have enjoyed the previous books. I'll be skipping the ones with this narrator because I just can't listen to her.

It had potential
Revisado: 11-22-20
Started out with a very interesting premise. It could have been great. Then it sort of dragged along with too much filler. Then it went completely off the rails. It was rather disappointing.

Historia
The lives of four very different women have been shaped - and battered - by one charming man…Ireland's debonair politician Paddy de Courcy - the "John F. Kennedy Jr. of Dublin" - has captured tabloid headlines and the imagination of his country with his charm and charisma. But the crushed hearts he's left behind him reveal more about his character than his winning, vote getting smile. Lola, Grace, Marnie, and Alicia have all suffered from his selfishness and cruelty.

Bad writing and awful narration
Revisado: 09-15-20
Lola chapters unlistenable. Bridgit Jones-style writing might work written book not audio. No pronouns v. confusing and v. annoying. No articles conjunctions sounds ridiculous. Can't listen. V. absurd. As bad as paragraph is writing, try reading out loud and see what mean.
The non-Lola chapters are better, but Marnie whines too much and is very unlikable. Grace is OK. However, the narrator doesn't pause long enough between scenes to indicate changes. She just goes on reading as if it's the same scene, changing from first to third person and sometimes talking about different people. It's quite perplexing.
I have read several Marian Keyes books and have enjoyed them. This is probably much better in written form.

Historia
In 1912, at the height of World War I, brilliant Shakespeare expert Elizebeth Smith went to work for an eccentric tycoon on his estate outside Chicago. The tycoon had close ties to the US government, and he soon asked Elizebeth to apply her language skills to an exciting new venture: code breaking. There she met the man who would become her husband, groundbreaking cryptologist William Friedman. Though she and Friedman are in many ways the Adam and Eve of the NSA, Elizebeth's story, incredibly, has never been told.

Distracting narration
Revisado: 06-15-20
I've listened to another book read by this narrator and, although she has a very pleasant voice which is nice to listen to, the over-annunciation becomes much too distracting. I really enjoyed the beginning of this book but it's gotten to the point where I can't listen anymore.

A good book can't overcome a bad narrator
Revisado: 12-15-19
No matter how good the book is, I won't notice if the person reading it to me is awful at narration. Her attempt at an Irish brogue is...what even is that? And when she reads male voices, she sounds like I do when I'm reading to my kids. I can't imagine why she was chosen for this book. Story was completely ruined.

Sappy
Revisado: 11-27-19
It's very difficult to appreciate a story when it's told from the point of view of someone so completely unlikable. This woman is awful. And the turnaround, while predictable, happened far too quickly to be believable.

Historia
I was so excited when Darcy announced out of the blue that we were flying to Kenya for our extended honeymoon. Now that we are here, I suspect he has actually been sent to fulfill another secret mission. I am trying very hard not to pick a fight about it, because after all, we are in paradise! Darcy finally confides that there have been robberies in London and Paris. It seems the thief was a member of the aristocracy and may have fled to Kenya. Since we are staying in the Happy Valley, we are well positioned to hunt for clues and ferret out possible suspects.

Sloooooow...why is the narration so slow?
Revisado: 10-29-19
I used to love this series and always looked forward to the next installment. This new narrator is so boring that she makes me forget to pay attention to what she's saying.
Pro-tip: take advantage of Audible's option to speed up playback. I've found that 1.3x makes the character voices much more bearable.
Update: After listening to the entire book, I have to say that it's not just the narration that's bad. The book is actually awful. The ending is crap. Like she ran out of time and had to suddenly end it without any thought and without wrapping everything up. This is terrible and I hope it's not indicative of what's to come with this series.
