During the year 1866, ships of several nations spot a mysterious sea monster, which some suggest to be a giant narwhal. The United States government assembles an expedition in New York City to find and destroy the monster. Professor Pierre Aronnax, a French marine biologist and narrator of the story, who happens to be in New York at the time, receives a last-minute invitation to join the expedition which he accepts. Canadian whaler and master harpoonist Ned Land and Aronnax's faithful servant Conseil are also brought aboard.

Great Audiobook let down by outdated translation

The quality of the recording is excellent. The narrator's performance is very good. Unfortunately this audiobook is based on the antiquated 1872 translation by Mercier Lewis. To put it mildly, the Reverend Lewis Page Mercier allowed his own prejudices to color the translation.
It is unfortunate that neither Audible nor Blackstone provide any information on the translation.

Decent Selection ruined by inadequate recording

The selected stories range from the excellent (The Willows) to the average. And there are 16 stories in total, so you don't feel cheated either.
However, none of the above matters if you can't listen to it. The narrator's cadence is monotonous, and elocution is simply inadequate, bordering on mumbling.
This is compounded by flawed recording with too much bass in the vocals.
I gave up listening to this audiobook twice, before finally trying a third time with the use of an equalizer.
