Fascinating, if sometimes unnecessarily “edgy”

Fascinating lifestyle, and I especially loved the dreamy, stream of consciousness moments where life just kind of transforms around the narrator. Unfortunately, for all the beautiful language used, there is often also quite tiresome cliche or “look how cool I am” edginess to the writing style, which is totally unnecessary considering how innately cool the book already is. Narrator Harrison does a great job. [AUDIBLE]

Beautiful Story & Translation, Remarkable Narration

Very impressive piece of storytelling. Loved Chaucer’s various embellishments on the Trojan war. In particular, Pandarus being so hugely fleshed out was really fun, and adds an unexpected bit of pathos to the character’s actions in Homer. In general, the descriptions and speeches throughout are about 3x longer than probably needed, but I didn’t mind. I enjoyed this a lot!

Have to mention as well, that I’m sure George Philip Krapp’s translation into modern English is at the bottom of much of my enjoyment, so I appreciate his work here. Jonathan Keeble also gives a remarkable performance, adding a lot life to every character. [AUDIBLE]

すごい話、チョーサーの色んな新しいトロイ戦争のコンセプトが好き。特にパンダロスの大きな役割、楽しいキャラクター!一般的に、話中説明がちょっと多すぎ、だけどまだ美しい話ね!

Gorgeous imagery and wonderful depiction of the afterlife. C.S. Lewis essentially made his own DIVINE COMEDY, but for my money did it a lot more successfully (and more briskly) than Dante. The highest compliment I can give is that its effortless approach to the unfathomable often reminded me of Neil Gaiman’s THE SANDMAN. I wonder if Gaiman pulled any influence from this. Narration by Rhind-Tutt is also particularly excellent. I’d love to read this again. [AUDIBLE]

One of the weaker translations/narrations of ILIAD I’ve read

Overall one of the weaker translations I’ve read, which is unfortunate because there are some beautiful passages in there. Mostly, the issue is that Lombardo uses too many modern concepts and phrases. “Greeks” over “Achaeans” is an unfortunately common one in modern renditions, so I don’t mind it much. But Tydeus is described at one point as “showing his stuff,” and Aphrodite’s girdle comes with magical qualities “built-in.” It just doesn’t fit for me.

Lombardo’s narration is also unfortunately not very successful in my eyes. He just can’t reach the emotional range necessary, and often devolves to outright shouting, or lets scenes (especially ones where multiple slain warriors are mentioned in a row) go by sounding like a laundry list. [AUDIBLE]

The ‘Interviews’ are Excellent, The Rest is Hit or Miss

The interview sections that make up the majority of the book are excellent. Ayoade’s comic timing is superb (as expected) and the production itself adds a lot of flair. The extended appendix is not quite so smooth though. Those chapters pretty hit and miss, with a larger emphasis on miss. I did love the Terrence Malick tweets / emails though!

Excellent Universe and Narrator

I love the universe that this builds, weaving all kinds of real historical and cultural touchstones into a rich mythology. I wish the other aspects of the book got as much attention—the characters are mostly archetypes and the plot never gives them room to do anything but the climactic move of what would otherwise be a chapter or series of chapters full of subtle discovery. This rushed quality robs most moments of their power, which are treated like big payoffs but have never been given enough time to build beforehand. However, I’d love to read more from this universe and from Clark in general. Narrator Waites does an excellent job. [AUDIBLE]

What was a pretty quick moment in the original ILIAD becomes an incredibly heartfelt travel story. From a change as small as altering the identity of Priam’s herald Idaeus, an incredible wellspring of emotion and storytelling opportunities bursts forth. Superb writing. I’ll always think of this book now, whenever I read that section of the ILIAD. Narrator Vance does a great job as always. [AUDIBLE]

Slightly Weak Translation, A Bit Overly Acted

I loved Wilson’s ODYSSEY but her ILIAD doesn’t work so well for me. A lot of her choices are too literal and lose the power of their imagery (stuff like having hollow “ships equipped with benches” rather than something like hollow “well benched ships”) though a lot of her choices concerning battle scenes are good ones. Some strange modern-sounding word picks in there (though who doesn’t have a few?) and some of the things she worried about in the translator’s notes didn’t seem necessary. But all in all it feels like a decent, if overly simplified version of the story. This theme is exemplified by each of the 24 books being named with a snappy ‘TV series episode’ style title, which I found tacky. It’s not the worst ILIAD translation I’ve read, but I’m sad that it doesn’t rank among my favorites like with Wilson’s ODYSSEY.

Narrator Audra McDonald however I think is a broader miss. She over-acts most of the dramatic or battle scenes, to the point of people pretty much screaming at the top of their lungs. She also doesn’t seem to catch the ring of music in any places where names are listed off, and reads them more like a dutiful chore. This especially makes the catalogue of ships pretty painful to listen to. I found myself tuning out of much of her performance throughout, and had to double or triple back. [AUDIBLE]

The performances are still rock solid in this one, but the story this time is a lot less focused than the previous. The main ‘macguffin’ of people fighting over Oedipus never really made sense to me in the first place, which sort of hurt the narrative drive. But this still had some great stuff, and I loved how it connected to other Greek myths. [AUDIBLE]
