A very lively and timely intro to The Talmud. Somehow not at all what I expected, but in a good way.

Rare case of a book that addresses a difficult subject without oversimplification or chatty distractions

It is amazing how much of the analysis has stood the test of time more than 70 years later. Could not recommend more.

Brief, readable, to the point, but truly insightful. One will not agree with every interpretation offered, but the authors whole point is that insight into points of view is critically important.

Great insights into the origins of modern Left’s attitudes to Israel

The author presents an in-depth and very cogently argued analysis of the writings of several of the most influential left-wing thinkers on the subject of Israel and Zionism. Very timely, especially given that most of the progressive discourse on Israel today is in the form of direct copy-paste from the authors featured or at least discussed in the book, with none of the supporting argumentation. If you want to see what considerations these modern positions actually rest on, this book is an eminently readable review of that.

The insight into decision making in large organizations are excellent. What looks like a premeditated conspiracy is actually the product of bureaucratic infighting, with the sides being mostly unaware of who is on their side and who is not.

The Hitler Virus is a very useful framework for thinking about the problems festering since the time of National Socialism. The book is very well written, though the perspective on the future is somewhat tied to the time the book was written.

The book was originally published in 1989 and some elements of it are outdated, but otherwise Sowell is a thoughtful guide to the college admissions process, who as a professor offers valuable inside insights that are not obvious to people outside academia.

Excellent content from Deming, but the foreword and supplemental materials are too long for audio format.

The first “classic” in many years to leave me thoroughly disappointed. Gibbon goes on so many unfounded rants about “heroes” and “villains” that his credibility as a historian is completely destroyed in my eyes. The most obvious example is the way his vicious hatred of the Jews drives an outsized proportion of his cause-and-effect “analysis”. I found it instructive to observe how much Gibbon sounds like a neo-Nazi conspiracy theorist, this does tell one something about Gibbon’s own time and cultural milieu, but gaining this insight did not seem to justify the time spent listening. I know it is not reasonable to apply the intellectual standards of our time to Gibbon, yet even an ancient historian like Thucydides managed to achieve incomparably greater objectivity in the treatment of his subject matter. I kept hoping that the book will get better and more insightful, but in the end it feels like a waste of time.
