Historia
Alice Scott is an eternal optimist still dreaming of her big writing break. Hayden Anderson is a Pulitzer-prize winning human thundercloud. And they’re both on balmy Little Crescent Island for the same reason: To write the biography of a woman no one has seen in years—or at least to meet with the octogenarian who claims to be the Margaret Ives. Tragic heiress, former tabloid princess, and daughter of one of the most storied (and scandalous) families of the 20th Century.

Put me off croissants
Revisado: 04-27-25
This book was fine. I actually enjoy a mystery and if there’s romance thrown in even better. I read several reviews on Audible and goodreads and I disagree that this story doesn’t belong in the romance genre. I thought Alice’s and Hayden’s relationship was convincing and, while a bit fast tracked, they were in a fairly unique situation- two good looking people with a career in common who are isolated in a small town with no other friends and they’ve signed NDAs that made talking about the one other thing going on in their lives impossible. If we can all suspend belief that any of these storybook main characters are single, then I can certainly believe these two opposites would be attracted to each other given the intense conditions.
I have listened twice this week and I still don’t understand the title. Did I miss a reference to it earlier in the story? I certainly heard the last sentence but there’s a disconnect for me between the story (stories) and the title. Something like “The Whole Truth” seems more apropos to me and might have given all the haters a heads up that there was more to the story than just two people canoodling and sleeping together for 35 chapters.
The main reason I am bothering to leave a review is in the off chance that EH or JW bother to read their reviews, I’ll thank them to never write or say the word, “croissant” ever again. None of these characters were French. It does not take place in France. There was no value added to the story by making the pronunciation of the word “French” - quotation marks are intentional because I can’t imagine any French person appreciating it either. As the kids say, can you not?
I expect the rights to this story have already been purchased and I’ll look forward to seeing the story come to life. I like mid-century Hollywood glamour and the bulk of the story within a story takes place during that era. Just please, no croissants.

Historia
Historic Inishmore Castle is opening its doors for the first time, hosting a charming weekend of whiskey tasting and soda bread baking. Sisters Mercy and Lizzie McCarthy are badly in need of a break, but their relaxing trip takes a decidedly unrestful turn when Mercy finds fellow guest Father Brennen slumped over the desk in the library… Did he have one glass too many or did someone want him dead?

Have mercy!
Revisado: 04-22-25
I stumbled upon this author and series recently and was delighted to see a new installment was scheduled for April 2025 release. I enjoy the setting and the characters who inhabit Sunshine Cove. If I’m being completely honest, I particularly like the tension and building relationship between Mercy (FMC) and Kieran (MMC) and the way their respective professions continue to intertwine. I like that the setting for this story moved us out of Sunshine Cove but still included the characters we’ve gotten to know well in the first two books. It was perhaps a bit contrived but it’s a cozy mystery so all is forgiven. My main gripe is how quickly the story wrapped up. The pacing of the story was fine until the end. I felt like more time could have been devoted to the culminating events in the castle. I liked the set up for future stories and, like the fool that I am, will eagerly await the next story in hopes that Ms. Connelly will take mercy on my middle-aged heart and give us a direct declaration of interest between the two main characters. Otherwise, I’m going to have to take up writing fan fiction! Of note, the performance was solid and I am looking forward to hearing more from both author and narrator.

Lucy Hutton has always been certain that the nice girl can get the corner office. She's charming and accommodating and prides herself on being loved by everyone at Bexley & Gamin. Everyone except for coldly efficient, impeccably attired, physically intimidating Joshua Templeman. And the feeling is mutual. Trapped in a shared office together 40 (ok, 50 or 60) hours a week, they've become entrenched in an addictive, ridiculous never-ending game of one-upmanship.

Came for the movie, stayed for the book
Revisado: 04-07-25
I really like this book. I first discovered the movie trailer which featured the elevator scene so, naturally, I was curious. After thoroughly exhausting the movie, I bought the audiobook. The performance is strong and the story is better fleshed out than in the movie which is rushed. It’s fairly spicy at a few points for those looking for that. Overall, it’s a story I come back to again and again.

Disappointed
Revisado: 03-09-25
I like Sally Thorne so I thought I’d give this short a shot. The story is contrived and given the FMC’s past trauma, I highly doubt she’d be so calm in the circumstance described. I just couldn’t get on board with anything about this story.

Slow burn
Revisado: 03-09-25
Foremost, the performances were terrific. I’ll listen to either actor read anything. The story was enjoyable and while I felt it moved a bit slowly for the most part, the love story and surrounding relationships did keep me interested. I listened a second time and probably paid closer attention once I knew better who was who- since many of the characters are actors in a period drama they have two names and different personalities. I thought Hattie and Anthony’s romance was believable and while fairly brief, there were a few spicy moments. I’m glad this story made its way into my library and I’ll likely revisit it again.

Gemma Summers is unlucky in love. She's known it since third grade, when her first crush blew a spitball into her hair, and a decade-long string of bad dates, boring sex, and abysmal morning afters has done nothing to improve her prospects. But when a random radio call-in contest lands her courtside tickets to the hottest playoff game of the season, Gemma's luck may finally be on the upswing, even if it doesn't exactly seem like it when the dreaded Jumbotron kiss cam lands on her and her date.

I made it to chapter 22 but I just can’t keep listening. This is like the poor man’s Fifty Shades of Grey with none of the spice and all of the insufferable weak female/nauseating alpha male attributes. There’s no story here you haven’t read before as more compelling writing. Move on.

Somewhat Spicy but Slow
Revisado: 01-18-25
I thought this was a fairly easy listen. The story itself is a little far fetched but I’m not a psychologist and can’t speak to the interpersonal trauma that the author uses to explain away the far fetched-ness. The spice level is somewhere between mild and medium. The story moves somewhat slowly but the performances are solid. I notice in a lot of romance novels written recently, there’s a lot of attention paid to consent and testing for sexually transmitted diseases. This book hand waives the issue of them not using a condom because the FMC is on birth control. Given this is set in college, the MMC is known to be promiscuous (that’s how the FMC determines he should be her sex tutor) and they aren’t in a committed relationship when they do engage in sex I think that was a missed opportunity. It simply stood out to me so I’m mentioning it. Otherwise, it was a fine listen for a quiet Saturday of folding laundry and putting Christmas away.

Nothing good ever comes from drinking a box of wine alone. So when I decided to entertain my drunken self by setting up some hand-me-down podcasting equipment and reading the steamy parts from romance novels, I never thought anyone would actually listen. The fact that I admitted my huge crush on my sexy next door neighbor made the whole thing even more mortifying. But sometimes life surprises you, and that’s how my podcast, Heidi’s Discount Erotica, was born. Now I, Heidi Larsen, a sweet former kindergarten teacher in Waconia, Minnesota, lead a scandalous double life.

Hot dish reheated
Revisado: 01-03-25
I thought this was a cute story if not a little silly. I wish there’d been a little more exploration of the FMC’s sexual awakening. I thought the way the story developed was fine but I think more focus on her own POV as a receiver, not just giver, would have added to the overall story. The performance was solid. I’m from Mn and unfortunately, we do sound like that, tho the mother is the most extreme version of it. I thought the parental characters were a little heavy handed in their interactions with their daughter, the FMC. I think if you walk in on your daughter in the throes the polite/passive Mn thing to do would be to immediately avert your eyes and leave- maybe drop the hot dish and reheating instructions on the kitchen table on your way out- but you’re not standing there staring and waiting for an introduction. Regardless, the story works and there’s fun character development. Some of the content was mildly spicy but since it’s not part of an active encounter (just passively read from book excerpts), I think there was an opportunity to turn up the heat that the authors missed. Still, I enjoyed it the way you can still enjoy tater tot hot dish as leftovers.

Lengthy but fun. TW for stillbirth and pregnancy complications.
Revisado: 12-28-24
I’m not sure why so many reviewers are surprised there’s sex in this book- it’s a romance audio book involving consenting adults. I thought it was fun and the sex scenes were moderately spicy- Codi Hall strikes a nice balance between reality and fantasy. What’s not mentioned in other reviews that I think is important is that the FMC is a labor and delivery nurse. There are mentions of pregnancy complications including stillbirth. It’s not a main focus of the story but that’s even more reason to note it so that it doesn’t take anyone by surprise out of nowhere.
