Listen in as the Audible Editors discuss their favorite listens of 2023 in this special podcast episode. What does it take to make the Best of the Year list? Whose performances stood out the most? From Jonathan Eig’s King: A Life and The In-Between by Hadley Vlahos R.N. to Alison Bechdel’s DTWOF, and so many more, there was so much great audio to consider—and as always, the editors have a lot of thoughts to share.

Good idea, very mediocre execution.
Revisado: 06-03-24
As I listen to about four books/month, I am always looking for new ideas. So I was excited to find this offering. While I am sure the concept is sound, the production spent more time spotlighting the editors and their digressions than giving a concise and well formulated idea of what to look for and why. It honestly felt like I walked into someone else’s office meeting where I wasn’t invited.

Sappy, uninspired, gratuitous
Revisado: 12-31-23
Wow this is really aimed at the lowest common denominator. The author writes the heroine as a naive yet highly sexed virgin. Sure she’s intelligent, but not smart enough to avoid the classic the female stereotype of virgin/whore. Feels like it was written by a male.

William Waters grew up in a house silenced by tragedy, where his parents could hardly bear to look at him, much less love him—so when he meets the spirited and ambitious Julia Padavano in his freshman year of college, it’s as if the world has lit up around him. With Julia comes her family, as she and her three sisters are inseparable: Sylvie, the family’s dreamer, is happiest with her nose in a book; Cecelia is a free-spirited artist; and Emeline patiently takes care of them all.

Disappointed
Revisado: 06-16-23
I kept hoping that the author would develop a smart and surprising story built around her female characters. Unfortunately it was very heavy on the sentimental and too thin on providing thoughtful/challenging ideas.

The plot an it’s twists felt contrived without one adult character that the reader will be sympathetic towards.

Well performed narration of a desperately plodding monologue. A man’s idea of woman’s obsession. Awful.

Mediocre

This is the first Woodhouse book I have listened to and chose it because of the great reviews. Was disappointed by the feeble plot and predictable characterizations. This is the Coors Light of fiction. I do not recommend.

Loved This Book
Revisado: 06-19-19
This is a classic and one of those books that I always want to find. The characters are rich and relatable, and the underlying messages are ones we all need to be remind of. As the author says, it was meant to be read out loud, and the narration is beautifully done.

Slow and Tedious
Revisado: 02-09-19
I stuck with this book to the bitter end hoping for some payoff, but the juice was just not worth the squeeze. The performances were the best part of listening and helped to animate some of the characters, however, even the best narration couldn't breathe enough life into this story for me.

Very Predictable/Halting Performance
Revisado: 10-04-18
There was never a time in this book when the reader doesn’t know how it will all play out. The main characters were stereotypical as well. At times the narration would hesitate in the middle of a phrase as if the reader had to turn the page. I love historical, character-driven novels, unfortunately this one really falls short in many ways.

A Disappointment
Revisado: 11-16-16
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
The story line is not rewarding to the reader. The book starts out on solid ground but then loses its way with an unrewarding ending.
What do you think your next listen will be?
The Time Travel's Wife
Which character – as performed by Hope Davis – was your favorite?
Hope Davis has a wonderful voice and style. That's why I gave the performance four stars. Fix was my favorite character.
Do you think Commonwealth needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
Not at all. These characters weren't engaging enough to want to return to.
