Historia
Failed academic Frank Nichols and his wife, Eudora, have arrived in the sleepy Georgia town of Whitbrow, where Frank hopes to write a history of his family's old estate - the Savoyard Plantation - and the horrors that occurred there. At first, the quaint, rural ways of their new neighbors seem to be everything they wanted. But there is an unspoken dread that the townsfolk have lived with for generations. A presence that demands sacrifice.

Historia
Remember that car that passed you near midnight on Route 66, doing 105 with its lights off? You wondered where it was going so quickly on that dark, dusty stretch of road, motor roaring, the driver glancing out the window as he blew by. You just saw the founder of the Suicide Motor Club. Be grateful his brake lights never flashed. Be grateful his car was already full.

The most original vampire story I’ve read. And horror as well
Revisado: 08-10-23
The originality of thought and plot makes what could be a tired familiar narrative of good and evil something new and amazing. Sinister. Believable and how these vampires seduce their prey is so insidious. Cannot say enough. A lesson that no genre or art form is ever truly exhausted of potential. If I could find a ghost story that took such a blue sky approach in horror I’d die happy.

Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Fantastic story always something unexpected
Revisado: 05-02-23
The story feels grounded in real science or scientific conjecture but with a scale and imagination that is familiar with the possibilities of vast space. While there were a few too many cute jokes made by the protagonist in his cute observations of his experience, which got tiresome, the story became more enthralling as it went on. Truly close to the genius of Arthur C Clark and his astonishing imaginings. This was a fantastic book

Historia
This forest isn't charted on any map. Every car breaks down at its treeline. Mina's is no different. Left stranded, she is forced into the dark woodland only to find a woman shouting, urging Mina to run to a concrete bunker. As the door slams behind her, the building is besieged by screams. Mina finds herself in a room with a wall of glass, and an electric light that activates at nightfall, when the watchers come above ground. These creatures emerge to observe their captive humans and terrible things happen to anyone who doesn't reach the bunker in time.

Revisado: 10-25-22
The dangers that threaten the characters are so unique I was struck by some of the experiences in a genuinely creepy way. And the characters are developed. A rich scary story. I’m on to the sequel or at least this authors second available book.

Historia
How far will he go to save his daughter? How far will he go to get revenge? It's 2053 and runaway climate change has brought civilization to the brink of collapse. Billions are threatened with starvation and mankind is slowly moving north in a world stricken by war, drought and superstorms - easy prey for the pandemics that sweep across the globe. Easy prey, too, for the violent gangs and people-smugglers who thrive in the crumbling world where 'King Death' reigns supreme.

Interesting premise pointless monologues
Revisado: 10-13-21
Editing is a friend of the story teller. Dragging it out may be delightful for the author. But have mercy on the rest of us.
Not sure why this was set in the future or alternate world but ok. I enjoy this writer very much but here his worst traits come out. Endless soliloquies by wicked characters or descriptions of circumstances which draw out the story for no benefit. In this desperate race everyone sure has a lot of time to muse about everything under the sun to each other. I hurt about as much as the dad from enduring so much blather.

The story of Britain from the earliest settlements in 3000BC to the death of Elizabeth I in 1603. To look back at the past is to understand the present. In this vivid account of over 4,000 years of British history, Simon Schama takes us on an epic journey which encompasses the very beginnings of the nation's identity, when the first settlers landed on Orkney. From the successes and failures of the monarchy to the daily life of a Roman soldier stationed on Hadrian's Wall, Schama gives a vivid, fascinating account of the many different stories and struggles that lie behind the growth of our island nation.

Great narration. And fluid rich writing
Revisado: 11-23-15
This book flows over the large history of England with a concise efficiency that is infused with humor of insight and a touch of irreverence. An engaging read that flows full of story and information. It flows wonderfully. I noticed I. This volume not much attention is given to Edward the fifth's conquest of France which seems a significant moment if only for the contention it would cause between the kingdoms especially in the Tudor era. But Simon spends the space discussing the religious conflicts caused by Henry the eighths fancies. And this is appreciated.

Historia
The great Oglala Sioux chief Red Cloud was the only Plains Indian to defeat the United States Army in a war, forcing the American government to sue for peace in a conflict named for him. At the peak of their chief’s powers, the Sioux could claim control of one-fifth of the contiguous United States. But unlike Sitting Bull, Crazy Horse, or Geronimo, the fog of history has left Red Cloud strangely obscured. Now, thanks to painstaking research by two award-winning authors, his incredible story can finally be told.

Rich story of this incredible figure of history
Revisado: 04-29-15
A very rich story of Red Cloud and his world. Evokes the view of the world through this man's eyes, which included acts of bravery and manliness that are not reconcile to western white eyes, savage and cruel. But the author writes in such a way as to not judge or condescend, merely to describe life as the Sioux viewed it. One gets sympathy for both sides of the conflict. I have had the privilege of going to Fort Phil Kearney, and to have visited Res Cloud's grave. I wish I had this book when I made my pilgrimage.

The Master of Horror spews more drivel
Revisado: 05-21-13
Art imitates life as the story was as painful as the walk described in the book. the main character weak, the reason he undertook this walk, unclear. And the endless waxing of life, love and regrets during this grueling challenge by each insipid character, coupled with defiant gestures of tedious predictability, make me wonder why S. King was so enthralled with his own journey, writing under the pseudonym Richard Bachman. This reads just as lamely as some of his other tomes, that try to capture what is his greatest earlier talent: strong and surreal experiences, interwoven with the earthy lives of people, feeling their own fragility, and limits of knowledge. See: Salems Lot, the Shining, the Body.
Same old S, different name. For my money S.King and Richard Bachman should both go jump in a lake, with a copy of this book shoved down their pants.
i did appreciate how the narrator read the story, and the germ of the concept intrigued me as well. But i sure wished I walked on by.

Historia
The Klondike gold rush, which occurred between 1896 and 1899, was one of the strangest outbreaks of "gold fever" ever to take place. With news of California's rush still fresh in their minds, thousands of men with get-rich-quick dreams hurried to stake out claims in the Yukon. But they did not count on the murderous weather...or the severe mountain passes that protected the gold.
