In this lively and illuminating book, historian Sophia Rosenfeld explores a long-standing and largely unspoken tension at the heart of democracy between the supposed wisdom of the crowd and the need for information to be vetted and evaluated by a learned elite made up of trusted experts.

Revisado: 06-02-24
I feel like I've been waiting forever for a book on the relationship between these two topics. I wanted to love this book.
I'm sure the author is very knowledgeable but unfortunately, she wrote the book in highly academic language that will quickly tire out any non-academic. Maybe we plebs are not the intended audience...
Message to the author: Sorry for the tough review. Readers distrust messages delivered in an impenetrable cloud of big, technical words. All sorts of shortcomings and mischief can be hidden this way and it takes too much of the reader's energy to detangle the writing to see if anything is off in there. Also, the narrator mispronounces words, e.g., mores.

Every kid should read this in school. The issues raised in this book are the one's we faced today and have remained unchanged since it was written. Time to fix them.

In this pathbreaking work, now with a new introduction, Edward S. Herman and Noam Chomsky show that, contrary to the usual image of the news media as cantankerous, obstinate, and ubiquitous in their search for truth and defense of justice, in their actual practice they defend the economic, social, and political agendas of the privileged groups that dominate domestic society, the state, and the global order.

As at least one other reviewer has noted this is a tough book to read, not because it uses big words or complicated ideas (it doesn't). It's tough because it's so shocking to hear the evidence and then realise you've been lied to by the media you trusted your whole life (until now).
**Everyone** should read this book - from young people to seniors.

Historia
Chris Harman describes the shape and course of human history as a narrative of ordinary people forming and re-forming complex societies in pursuit of common human goals. Interacting with the forces of technological change as well as the impact of powerful individuals and revolutionary ideas, these societies have engendered events familiar to every schoolchild-from the empires of antiquity to the world wars of the 20th century. In a bravura conclusion, Chris Harman exposes the reductive complacency of contemporary capitalism.

Changed my view of history and explains so much!
Revisado: 09-14-19
This book helped me see how extensively white-washed the history we were taught in school was.
No wonder we don't question why we work harder than ever so the multinational corporate big wigs, who already have so much more than any human needs, can double and triple that wealth.
The 1% get richer and richer while we the people struggle just to pay bills and provide for our children.
This brand of insanity is what helped bring down the Roman Empire, and many other empires, and it may well bring down the American Empire (yes, it's an empire).
PS: My only quibble is that the narrator has a slightly unnatural and distracting style. You can ignore it much of the time, though.

Historia
The Founding Fathers tried to protect us from the threat they knew, the tyranny that overcame ancient democracy. Today, our political order faces new threats, not unlike the totalitarianism of the twentieth century. We are no wiser than the Europeans who saw democracy yield to fascism, Nazism, or communism. Our one advantage is that we might learn from their experience.

Historia
With the end of the Cold War, the victory of liberal democracy was thought to be absolute. Observers declared the end of history, confident in a peaceful, globalized future. But we now know this to be premature. Authoritarianism first returned in Russia, as Putin developed a political system dedicated solely to the consolidation and exercise of power. In the last six years, it has creeped from east to west as nationalism inflames Europe, abetted by Russian propaganda and cyberwarfare.

Historia
Comedy superstar Mike Myers writes from the (true patriot) heart about his 53-year relationship with his beloved Canada. Mike Myers is a world-renowned actor, director and writer and the man behind some of the most memorable comic characters of our time. But, as he says, "No description of me is truly complete without saying I'm a Canadian". He has often winked and nodded to Canada in his outrageously accomplished body of work, but now he turns the spotlight full-beam on his homeland.

I absolutely loved this book and highly recommend it to all my fellow Canucks.

Robert B. Cialdini's Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion examines the compliance methods by which marketers, salespeople, and others, such as cult leaders, pressure people into doing things they would not otherwise do. There are six basic compliance tools: reciprocity, consistency, social proof, liking, authority, and scarcity. Listeners can learn specific techniques to resist each.

Historia
This is a summary of the original book, Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion by Robert Cialdini. The book is an authoritative work on the art of persuasion. It discusses the mental attitudes that make you say "yes", and, more importantly, explains how to use these. The author walks you through six universal principles and explains how to be a skilled influencer, while at the same time knowing how to shield yourself from negative persuasions.

Revisado: 12-28-17
This summary is written in a very stilted style. This detracts from its value as a summary.
I couldn't finish listening. This summary might be salvageable with some editing, though.
I found the Instaread summary to be much better.
