Cliff notes for a soap opera
Revisado: 01-12-23
I thought I would try this after listening to the reviews on a morning talk show. It was a compelling listen because you get sucked in to the who and why dun nit from the first chapter. It's a fast paced, too fast paced outline. I found it to be really dissatisfying. The characters were prototypes and the gaping holes created discontinuity. non of the characters were given enough depth to engage the reader. I assume from the 30 almost five star ratings in before me, that the general public is very satisfied.

It's 1920, and Christmas is coming. Major Lennox finds a body on his doorstep - why on his doorstep? Was it to do with the Countess? Was it about the ruby necklace? Lennox goes to Melrose Court, home to his uncle, Lord Melrose, to uncover the mystery. But then, the murders begin, and it snows, and it all becomes very complicated.

THE NARRATOR IS OFF
Revisado: 08-05-21
I like the stories, so I endure the narration which is insipidly dramatic of the women characters, and gives Lenox, who is a young thirty the voice of a fifty year old. I do hope the narration is improved because the stories are entertaining.

Historia
In 1989 Ken Follett astonished the literary world with The Pillars of the Earth, set in 12th-century England. Readers and listeners ever since have hoped for a sequel. At last, here it is. Although the two novels may be listened to in any order, World Without End also takes place in Kingsbridge, two centuries after the townspeople finished building their exquisite Gothic cathedral. The cathedral is again at the center of a web of love and hate, greed and pride, ambition and revenge.

MIDIEVAL SOAP OPERA
Revisado: 07-16-20
This was entertaining. I appreciated the length for helping me through all my chores and exercise. the value hours for money is great. It is somewhat emotionally manipulative, although the situations are probably accurate, just exploited. This is entertainment and as such is successful. great literature- not.

REALLY????
Revisado: 07-16-20
I have read many of Dick Francis books. I like Simon Prebble best as a narrator, but Gosham is okay. What I don't get is why Dick Francis thought he had to make his main characters implausibly resilient. They seem to bounce back from many forms of physical abuse miraculously. This lack of realism in his otherwise good stories detracts from the credibility.

M.C.Beaton is rolling over in the grave.
Revisado: 05-22-20
this was an entertaining book for bedtime. I cannot believe that Rhys Bowen felt comfortable lifing the characters and settings directly from the Hammish Macbeth series. The similarities are startling. I guess she thinks if it were good for M. C. Beaton it woild be good for her. She is already cashing in.

Compelling, Suspenseful, Riveting, - try BORING
Revisado: 11-03-19
Like another reader before me, i am ten hours into this, and find myself skipping ahead and bored. I do not understand the reviews, 'suspenseful, riveting, compelling,' i find it to be very boring. i have read many John Grisham books, probably most. This is tired and had better pick up or I will put it down.

BETTER THAN THE LAST THREE, THANK YOU. LOUISE
Revisado: 09-04-19
i gave this a try with trepidation. the last two books were too too much for me. Gamache was taking on mythological qualities and i was not impressed. The heart of the three pines stories revolve around an eccentric, creative, small community of friends, who were still humans, with some very quirky personalities and life styles. In this book the main characters were still present as know personalities, but their stories were not the center of attention.Gamache returned to his overly wise and more human self. His personality and the supporting crew never quite seem to be congruous with the dramatic, violence, and overall depravity of the bad guys. he never seems to be jaded or hardened in a predictable way. i guess i often find him a little too good to be true, but i enjoyed the story, and louise penny's ability to let what she has created, what people have come to love, have a new chapter in their lives without having to top the drama and story line of the previous books. it is impossible to have each new book be braver, more dangerous, more threatening, more heroic than the previous ones.

So many good reviews up front. i wanted to be entertained and educated. i didn't give it many stars because i couldn't listen to it. if you would like to hear someone readying the dictionary, or phone book. this is for you. I bet the story is good but i can't endure the narration.
