Historia
The Galactics arrived with their Battle fleet in 2052. Rather than being exterminated under a barrage of hell-burners, Earth joined a vast Empire that spans the Milky Way. Our only worthwhile trade goods are our infamous mercenary legions, elite troops we sell to the highest alien bidder. In 2122 a lost colony expedition contacts Earth, surprising our government. Colonization is against Galactic Law, and Legion Varus is dispatched to the system to handle the situation. Earth gave them sealed orders, but Earth is 35 lightyears away.

Interesting concept...
Revisado: 07-13-24
The MC is a negligent idiot that needs to remain dead. His strongest trait is plot armor. So much plot armor it's surprising he can even walk. The concept is the only thing that's let me get to book two, but nearing the end of book two has ground down my want to keep listening.

Nope
Revisado: 06-26-24
I'm halfway into this book and it's been a slog. I have so many questions and the book keeps making me ask more. Other reviews said it was interesting but I'm failing to see how. We haven't been given any context about what anything is, terms haven't been defined, and it's not clear why anything is or has happened.
Some vague dialogue has been deliver that hints we might get a reason to care about what's been happened over the last four hours. Perhaps this is a series that takes place inside another series? I want to ask more questions here but the might be spoilers. It's been one action sequence and something like three and a half hours of dialogue that hasn't lead to anything.
Possible spoilers.
We have the impression Titans are better than humans. Humans hate mutants for some reason, but mutants seem to be better than Titans.
Mutants are created somehow. So why do Mutants exist if they have to be created? Why don't the mutants take over Earth rather than somehow living on Pluto. If Earth hates mutants so much, they know the mutants live on Pluto, and Earth has mutants around Pluto, why does Pluto still exist?
The book is following someone we are told isn't the MC, it's a story about how something lead to things(the whole books has essentially been this vague). After we are told the MC isn't the MC, the book continues following our not MC that is the MC.

I couldn't finish it
Revisado: 01-05-24
I remember the other books being good and considered going back to listen to them. But I decided not to after getting about halfway through this book.
This book is constant bickering between the characters. I recall some disagreements and eye rolling in the first two books, but it wasn't the whole book. The fights are so slow and drag on. I started fast forwarding during parts to make them end. Hearing "give in" that many times, over such a long duration made me want to throw my headphones and phone to make it stop.

Impossible for others
Revisado: 01-05-24
I've enjoyed the other books in this series so far. But something about this one feel short. I found myself zoning out frequently because the MC was rambling or the subject he was talking about wasn't that interesting. The author kept pushing that "something is coming" or "something is about to happen", and then nothing would happen. We see a number of side quests start too. Maybe the will be finished in other books in this series?
One constant that gets me is how of then author says something is impossible or ultra-purple-mondo-rare, but the MC is able to do/overcome/calculate instantly.

Fight, survive, adapt, and rely only on yourself. That is Derek’s creed and what's got him through the System Integration on Earth. Everything changed when the System came. Cute bunnies and beautiful butterflies became savage killing machines. Then the Invaders arrived with a single goal: to obtain ownership of this new habitable planet. War has raged ever since. None of this mattered much to Derek, aside from making living a little more perilous.

What is this?
Revisado: 06-10-23
The prelude gave me hope for this one. Sadly, once the book started, I found it hard to care about much. The idea behind the story seemed interesting to me so I picked up the book during a sale. Had I used a credit, I could have returned it at least. I got to chapter 4 and had to stop listening. If we got some kind of background on anything in the first few chapters it likely would have helped a lot. The first chapter had some interesting things going on. But we knew nothing about any of the characters involved, so I found it hard to care about anything that happened to them.
The MC is some kind of manic intolerable idiot. He is either going to have no character growth or very little character growth. The author gives us about as much info as I cared about the MC - none.
The narrator was okay.

Overly political and audio issues
Revisado: 03-30-23
The first six chapters audio was all over the place. I needed to turn the volume up while the narrator was whispering. Then sometimes that would be followed up with him yelling. I couldn't get my headphones off fast enough.
This part could just be me. So you may want to take my review with a grain of salt. I found them discussing current political issues in the book annoying. Part of the reason I listen and read books it to escape. I understand political, economical, or other things we face in our day to day life can make a story better and drive a story forward. But when it's this much of a story and essentially a mirror to the current political climate.... I find it hard to think the author couldn't come up with something better in his giant fighting mech-type story. With the story that's been told so far, and the idea's the author has shown us, this feels like we could see some great ideas. But we got current political events instead.

Historia
Milton Frederick never had the chance to live out his life as a professional gamer on Earth, mainly because he was abducted by aliens. Unfortunately, he wasn’t returned home after the typical probing associated with such things to tell an unbelievable story to his friends. Instead, he was summarily killed and his consciousness was inserted into a Station Core, a giant, metal, egg-shaped object that could use technology to create traps, Combat Units, and other defenses to protect not just himself, but those he cared about.

A pleasant surprise
Revisado: 11-16-22
This was an interesting take on dungeon core books. The way the narration is handled was interesting too. I haven't listened to any other books from Joanthan, but based on context, Louise narrated another book series he authored and they brought her back to narrate the same character. I really liked this and would love to see it more.
Taking dungeon cores to space is an interesting twist on the dungeon core concept. Most DC books, space doesn't seem to be a limitation to a growing dungeon. Taking the core to space was a good way to add a sci-fi twist to something that's usually semi-medieval.
The MC isn't a known-it-all, a computer that can calculate its way out of everything, or fails/falls through everything with luck. Joanthan took the time to develop the characters and then took the time to leverage each character in ways that made sense. Each character felt like they could exist. They have strengths and weaknesses, and other characters utilized other character's strengths.
I loved breaking out the stat blocks in its own chapters. That why you don't have to hear for the 93rd time that the MC can speak a language that came in handy once eight books ago. If it's not your thing at all, you can just skip that chapter.
The reason that I gave the story three stars is that it's still a DC book at its core. I'm glad I gave it a shot.

Not sure what happened
Revisado: 07-15-22
I loved the first book. The second book was alright. But I struggled with this one.
R.C. Bray did a great job at bringing the characters to life and continues to make each one feel unique.
Unfortunately, I can't totally put my finger on what it was about this that fell flat for me. I had a hard time caring about what happened to the characters or the characters and couldn't finish it. I will likely try listening to this again later and will update the review if I can figure out what fell flat or maybe I just wasn't in the right mood for this story the first time around.

Highly rated, but not for me
Revisado: 04-20-22
A lot of other reviews acknowledge that the other books are more exciting and that this first one is a bit slower. It was indeed slow. I found it hard to care about much of anything that was going on, and the parts that I did care about seemed to last all of 30 seconds. But other portions of the book the author will go on for 20 minutes about a bit of fabric hanging from a wall.
The thing that killed this audiobook for me the most and what made it so I won't be continuing the series is how they handled the character's inner monologue. The narrator would do a kind of whisper or cover his mouth or something. It made his voice sound wet(?) and made me want to start attacking anything around me. Since about a 1/4 of the book seems to be inner monologue, it made finishing the book more difficult.

Middle of the road
Revisado: 02-04-22
I have fairly mixed feelings about this audiobook. I don't understand the amount of whispering. They only acknowledge whispering once in the book that I recall but they have entire conversations that are whispered when no one else is around or when the MC is thinking, but only some times. I've listened to other books the narrator has worked on and enjoyed his work. I'm wonder if the whispering is something he was told to do?
A lot happens in this book but so much of it seems to amount to nothing. I'd like to guess that it pays off in figure books but am not holding my breath.
Other all, this book is middle of the road, when setting up some plot points it's fairly obvious what they are going to result in, some plot points seem to get buried and amount to nothing, a lot doesn't make sense for a space faring group, but I'm hoping they are setting up a lot for future books. I did get access to the entire series as a part of the Audible subscription, so I will at least start book two to see if it does pick up. But I'm not sure I would spend money on it, unless I was having issues finding something else - maybe a credit in that case.
