Historia
In Push Off from Here, McKowen delves deeply into each of her nine points: what they mean, how they work, and how every person can live them. She addresses topics such as the correlation between trauma and addiction, the importance of radical honesty, letting go of the illusion of control, the value of community, a reminder that healing is a continual process, and that the process is a gift. Whether you’re just starting out or have been sober for decades, McKowen instructs us to be kind to ourselves: Change is messy and progress is rarely linear, but we can always push off from here.

Pioneering new sobriety
Revisado: 03-11-23
I was very much looking forward to Laura's second book on sobriety and life. I listened and read her previous book We Are the Luckiest when I was 2 years alcohol and pot free. I was immediately drawn to what she has to say in regards to addiction and how to live life after one stops drinking/drugging. This is new "recovery", this is eclectic and diverse. Laura draws on her aa experiences, but then moves on from there to explore the human qualities that we all struggle with, not just the "alcoholic"/addict. I never jived with the idea that there is this "us and the normies" in AA. I spent a year in AA and it was helpful, but to me it's dated and fails in so many ways. Glad it exists, but I needed more. Laura brings that and I think is one of the pioneers in new sobriety. Laura's 9 things and her wisdom show the paradox of addiction and life. I love how she is able to combine a strong sense of personal responsibility and at the same time loosen the grip of shame that is so tied to addiction. When I first heard "it's not your fault, but it is your responsibility", my life changed. I was able to see that I can let go of the ownership of my addiction, let go of all the negative past and focus on doing what it takes now to stay away from alcohol. She tells a story with experience, shared struggle and a perspective of a person who has given her life a lot of thought and work. Laura brings it, and her ability to be vulnerable and real along with her powerful writing makes this second book so worth the wait. I absolutely loved this book.

Historia
Meet Ove. He's a curmudgeon - the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him "the bitter neighbor from hell". But behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness.

Ove is just super!
Revisado: 08-22-16
I listened to this book over the last 3 weeks. I loved it all! What a great, heart warming, love filled story. Just when you feel like life isn't worth living anymore, life gives you what you need. This book shows us all just how important our connections with people and animals are. It also gives us perspective that what appears on the outside is not always what is truly going on in the inside. And also, that we all need each other. Just great!
