Historia
Cdr. Richard Jadick's story is one of the most extraordinary to come out of the war in Iraq. At 38, the last place the Navy doctor was expected to be was on the front lines. He was too old to be called up, but not too old to volunteer. In November 2004, with the military reeling from an acute doctor shortage, Jadick chose to accompany the First Battalion, Eighth Marine Regiment (the "1/8") to Iraq.

Outstanding story, sobering, and motivational.
Revisado: 12-05-24
What a great tribute to the men and women Dr. Jadick led and worked during time spent in and with the U.S. Marines. Before reading this book, I didn’t know that Dr. Jadick and I crossed paths twice. Once when we were both Marines at Camp Lejeune preparing for and during desert storm. Then again at Wellstar West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange, Georgia, just before I retired.
Dr. Jadick captures what it means to be a Marine and a battalion surgeon in combat. He’s documented great lessons learned and opportunities for improvement in US Navy medicine.
I learned of his book by happenstance when there was an advertisement for a talk he was giving at the local library. I wasn’t able to make the talk, but it prompted me to download the book. I am so glad I did and I know anyone the least bit interested in reading it or hearing it, will think so also.
I don’t know how Dr. Jadick would read it or if he coached the narrator, but Thomas Hayden did a great job.

Historia
In this bold examination of the Israeli-American relationship, Walter Russell Mead demolishes the myths that both pro-Zionists and anti-Zionists have fostered over the years. He makes clear that Zionism has always been a divisive subject in the American Jewish community, and that American Christians have often been the most fervent supporters of a Jewish state, citing examples from the time of J. P. Morgan and John D. Rockefeller to the present day.

A phenomenal history lesson
Revisado: 11-11-24
The author covers some significant ground from George Washington to the middle for the most recent Biden administration. Although Mead keeps coming back to Israel, he never overlooks what is going on in the rest of the world as it relates to the United States and other major nation states. highly recommended.

Historia
Free speech is a human right, and the free expression of thought is at the very essence of being human. The United States was founded on this premise, and the First Amendment remains the single greatest constitutional commitment to the right of free expression in history. Yet there is a systemic effort to bar opposing viewpoints on subjects ranging from racial discrimination to police abuse, from climate change to gender equity. The Indispensable Right places the current attacks on free speech in their proper historical, legal, and political context.

An exceptional read or listen, depending on how you prefer. It goes into a long history of human thought, speech, and how being able to express ourselves is an intrinsic part of being human.
The audio book is read by the author, which is always how I prefer, when consuming a book in the medium. There are a number of different theories presented, regarding how free speech is considered either dangerous to or required in a free society. I wholeheartedly recommend the book.
There is a lot covered, requiring considerable review and reflection, on my part. It may be one of those books, I need to hold in my hand and read myself, with highlighter and pen in hand.

In this definitive biography, renowned Bible scholar, Anglican bishop, and best-selling author N. T. Wright offers a radical look at the apostle Paul, illuminating the humanity and remarkable achievements of this intellectual who invented Christian theology - transforming a faith and changing the world. For centuries, Paul, the apostle who "saw the light on the Road to Damascus" and made a miraculous conversion from zealous Pharisee persecutor to devoted follower of Christ, has been one of the church's most widely cited saints.

An I absolutely wonderful, well thought out, well researched, and performed. I can see why it might’ve taken N. T. Wright so long to complete his biography of Paul.
As good as it is just to listen and read this book on a own, I do recommend a study group to accompany the feet. Ultimately, I downloaded the audio version and then purchased the book to read it, we’re highlighting, underlining a note set margins were allowed.

Explore the power of the underdog in Malcolm Gladwell's dazzling examination of success, motivation, and the role of adversity in shaping our lives, from the best-selling author of The Bomber Mafia. Three thousand years ago on a battlefield in ancient Palestine, a shepherd boy felled a mighty warrior with nothing more than a stone and a sling, and ever since then the names of David and Goliath have stood for battles between underdogs and giants. David's victory was improbable and miraculous. He shouldn't have won. Or should he have?

Well worth the time
Revisado: 08-08-22
Recommended to me by my good friend and fellow Marine, I decided to push it to the top of my reading list which is not always easy to do. I didn’t have any specific expectation as the book began except that it was recommended to me by this individual and so it must be good. I was riveted by Mr. Brooks’s story and research. I suppose research should come first and then the story. If you are like me approaching Retirement, or closer to 50, or even over the age of 35 and want a glimpse of what is approaching, read this book. Even more important if you are a striver and extremely successful.
Mr. Brooks and I are probably closer in our beliefs and in alignment to life which made it easy for me to grasp what he was saying. It may be a bit more dramatic for those who are not in such an alignment but still worth it.

Data Rich, dance thoughts
Revisado: 06-24-22
The opening the book begins with significant amounts of data and interpretation of that data. Comparisons to other studies is frequent.
Lots of comparative analysis with other trends, pro and con, to other industries and movements through it our history. The summary gives a stiff warning and appears to truly support the advancement of education of our children.
Very well read performance and it must’ve been a challenge to do so.

Historia
For decades, the Navy has stood sentinel over crucial waterways, ensuring safe passage of goods from nearly all nations. The result is the longest phase of peace on the waters since the Phoenicians, with rising living standards, more (total) jobs, and the dramatic decline of poverty in Asia. But these prosperous times could be at an end. Today China is building warships at an extraordinary pace. India, Japan, Vietnam, and Europe are responding with more fighting ships. What will result from China’s rising naval might, particularly in the South China Sea?

Balanced historical review of the long peace
Revisado: 02-18-22
Before this book, I read Kissinger’s On China, Webb’s The Big Nine, Pillsbury’s The 100 Year Marathon, and Gingrich’s Trump vs China. In The Blue Age Easterbrook give a balanced and historical account of what has taken place on the three quarters of our planet not observable from where we humans spend the majority of our life. The majority of his telling and asking questions is focused on what he refers to as the long war (made up of five world wars) and the present long peace. It is very much present day. He is optimistic but not without some warning of what could be.
I wholeheartedly recommend it’s reading/listening.
